It is an emotional experience "so unlike the synthetic, consultant-driven, poll-tested, phony-baloney of conventional presidential campaigning."

FDR invented fireside chats. Donald Trump has invented a way to get out what he wants to get out without being boxed in by the media. He has gone back to what worked for him in the campaign. The biggest applause is always for the wall. Trump gauges what is most important to his base of voters who attend these rallies. He is playing a stage character, says Mark Steyn, who for many years was a movie and arts critic. Trump is "playing the subtext," not merely the dialogue on the script. As the crowd leaves the rally, some are joyfully repeating slogans, some are in tears. It is an emotional experience so unlike the synthetic, consultant-driven, poll-tested, phony-baloney of conventional presidential campaigning.
