What is the real reason Ross resigned?

Yesterday ABC investigative reporter Brian Ross resigned. The media reported that it was because of his false reporting on the Michael Flynn investigation. Today, Sundance at the Conservative Treehouse says,

ABC suspends lyin' Brian Ross

Fox News is reporting that ABC has suspended lyin' Brian Ross for four weeks without pay because of the story he made up out of thin air about Trump and Flynn. In my humble opinion, ABC should have fired Ross when he came on the air after the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting and lied that murderer James Holmes was a member of a Tea Party organization.
