Donald and Melania do the Tomahawk Chop at game four of the World Series...the Left goes bonkers!

Matt Margolis reports,
Donald Trump’s attendance at Game 4 of the 2021 World Series has naturally generated a lot of buzz. Trump’s attendance at the game comes months after he called for a boycott of Major League Baseball when they pulled the All-Star Game from Atlanta following the passage of Georgia’s election integrity laws.

Odds of Life on Newfound Earth-Size Planet '100 Percent,' Astronomer Says

Jeanna Bryner reports,
An Earth-size planet has been spotted orbiting a nearby star at a distance that would makes it not too hot and not too cold — comfortable enough for life to exist, researchers announced today (Sept. 29).
If confirmed, the exoplanet, named Gliese 581g, would be the first Earth-like world found residing in a star's habitable zone a region where a planet's temperature could sustain liquid water on its surface.
"Personally, given the ubiquity and propensity of life to flourish wherever it can, I would say, my own personal feeling is that the chances of life on this planet are 100 percent," said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, during a press briefing today."I have almost no doubt about it."

What will it take to restore America's image?

Conrad Black writes about
the completely avoidable and shaming debacle of the American defection from its own alliance and helter-skelter flight from Afghanistan, leaving thousands of desperate people of many nationalities who had relied upon the United States, to fend for themselves against the new terrorist regime that seized power there (and $85 billion of U.S. military hardware along with it).
We have now also learned that despite President Trump’s hugely expensive renovation of the American military, it now has no answer to Chinese and Russian hypersonic weapons.
Various well-informed British and Europeans told me that they found a variety of utterances by Joe Biden and his spokespeople grievously inappropriate or absurd. Most upsetting were Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ po-faced assurance that “the border is closed” while on the other half of the split-screen people were simultaneously wading or walking into the country illegally; climate czar John Kerry importuning the Chinese government to decelerate their pell-mell commissioning of new coal-fired power plants; Secretary of State Blinken’s fatuous lamentation about the “lack of diversity” in the new Taliban government in Afghanistan; and White House press secretary Jen Psaki’s assertion that the administration “welcomed the competition” of Russia’s hypersonic nuclear-tipped missiles.
The thought of the most successful alliance in history being “led” for three more years by an American president whose round-the-clock gaffes are not protected in Europe as Mr. Biden is in the United States by a totalitarian social media platform cartel and terminally biased national political media is a subject of profound and general disconcertion.
Despite my substantial agreement with their concerns, I vigorously attempted to defend the American interest. The best I could do was to remind them that the United States was the most successful country in history and always worked out its problems and that even after three more years of this ramshackle defeatism, a nation as great as America could quickly be restored to its traditional confidence and solidity. I was not entirely persuasive: my knowledgeable British and European friends not only do not think America is back, they think it has gone mad.

Taiwan: more deaths from the vaccine than from Covid itself!

Maybe it's time to put an end to the woke march through our history!

Kunstler writes,
It also came out that twice this fall a teenage boy wearing a skirt — ostensibly gender-confused in exactly the way promoted by the school board — committed two rapes of teenage girls in the girls’ bathrooms of two Loudoun County schools, to which he was granted access as someone pretending to bethink himself a girl — though it turned out he knew quite well how to deploy his male generative organ. The crimes were reported to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and shared with the County School Superintendent, who covered it up… not a smooth move, as things turned out, because now the country can see exactly how criminally dishonest the Wokesters are.
And as all this rolled out, Woke-Progressive Democratic candidate for Governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, made the supernaturally doltish utterance that “parents shouldn’t tell schools what to teach.” His campaign even put out roadside signs under his name repeating the statement-of-principle, in case anyone missed it. The result: McAuliffe dropped about eight points almost overnight in the polls. The voters are about to pop him out of the political universe like a watermelon seed between their fingers.
Meanwhile, the mummy known as “Joe Biden” has ventured abroad, first to Rome to be feted, his handlers thought, by the Pope. But his excellency Pope Francis ordered the TV cameras turned off, apparently unwilling to be seen consorting with the inanimate, disintegrating graven image of a US president — anymore than he would want to be caught conversing with a statue of the Medici Pope Leo X in his Vatican garden.
Also meanwhile, the stage managers back at the White House, Chief of Staff Ron Klain and Susan Rice, shadowy Director of the Domestic Policy Council, floated an initiative to give half-a-million dollars to each family member of children and parents who had gotten separated while attempting to enter the US illegally. That ought to warm the hearts of US citizens thrown out of their jobs and their livelihoods for demurring to take a vaccine that doesn’t work and which causes havoc in the organs, blood vessels, and immune systems of many who have taken it — against a disease the engineering of which was paid for by their own tax dollars.
Now, cue the Mother of all Migrant Caravans marching north to the wide-open US / Mexican border — because “Joe Biden” wants it that way — just what millions of broke, thrown-out-of-work, soon to freeze and starve US citizens will be treated to watch on their flat-screens before the cable service is switched off for non-payment. “Joe Biden” just wants to rub their faces in it, or rather the folks behind him pulling his strings want to do that. Maybe the time has come to cut “Joe Biden’s” strings. And just maybe it’s time to put an end to the Woke march through our history.

The metaverse

By now you have probably seen the video of Mark Zuckerberg excitedly telling us about the metaverse. Wes Fenlon is certain that it is all bullshit!
If you also know deep in your heart that the metaverse is a big fat steaming load of billionaire nerd pabulum, I hope reading these words provides you with a wave of vindicating comfort. You're not crazy. I know it can feel like that when the people peddling these things seem so convinced that they're the future, like they know something you don't. Don't fall for it. Watching people spend $69 million in fake money to buy a JPEG should make you feel like you're living in an age of unparalleled nonsense.
Why don't the tech billionaires chasing after sci-fi metaverses get that these fictional virtual realities seem great on the page but would be hell to actually live in 12 hours a day? I truly do not know, but I think it may have something to do with their refusal to admit that they are the baddies.
They keep floating these visions of a utopian metaverse that's all about people talking to one another in a virtual utopia, even as they sit atop massive companies that use piles of money to reshape the internet as they see fit.
...the metaverse will be a place where advertisement and authenticity are even harder to tell apart. It's a commercial dream, not a creative one.
If Facebook—sorry, Meta—is one of the key drivers of the metaverse, then of course it will have some new spin on the ad-laden news feed. It'll just be a natural extension of the gig economy, some poor soul being paid .00000000001 bitcoin an hour to virtually dress up like a carnival barker and shout about the latest horrible news out of Syria on some virtual street corner. And if Epic somehow created Sweeney's utopian metaverse, it would still be built to promote Epic's own interests and profit above all else. There's no way for any massive tech company to build the metaverse without becoming the villains.
Tech companies are going to keep pushing the metaverse, and eventually we'll all have to deal with it. But in the meantime, don't feel like you've lost your mind when every pitch for it feels absolutely meaningless.

Where did the live ammunition come from?

Suzy Byrne reports,
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer who oversaw the prop weapons sed on the Rust movie set, has made her first public statements.
Through her attorneys, the 24-year-old — who's at the center of the investigation along with assistant director David Halls — shared her side of the story for the first time about the fatal shooting of the film's director of photography Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin when he was rehearsing with what he had been told by Halls was a "cold," or safe, gun. Previously, only comments Gutierrez-Reed made to authorities were released as part of a search warrant filed in the investigation.
The statement went on to "address some untruths that have been told to the media, which have falsely portrayed [and] slandered" Gutierrez-Reed.
"Safety is Hannah’s number one priority on set," the statement says. "Ultimately this set would never have been compromised if live ammo were not introduced. Hannah has no idea where the live rounds came from."
Gutierrez-Reed seemingly confirmed reports there were two accidental discharges prior to Baldwin — who was rehearsing a scene with what he had been told was a "cold" gun — shooting Hutchins.
"Hannah was hired on two positions on this film, which made it extremely difficult to focus on her job as an armorer," the statement said. "She fought for training, days to maintain weapons, and proper time to prepare for gunfire but ultimately was overruled by production and her department. The whole production set became unsafe due to various factors, including lack of safety meetings. This was not the fault of Hannah."
Baldwin returned to the East Coast, where he primary lives in two New York locations, but has been staying in a small town in Vermont with his family.

Garland is unfit

Glenn Reynolds writes,
Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama died on base when Republicans refused to take it up. The seat was instead filled by now-Justice Neil Gorsuch. Garland’s consolation prize: becoming President Joe Biden’s attorney general. Yet in nine short months, he’s proved not only unfit to sit on the court but unfit to serve as attorney general. Indeed, his behavior suggests he’s not qualified for any federal position.
But what Garland has demonstrated as AG is a different kind of deficit, a deficit of character and integrity. As Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said to Garland in hearings this week, “Thank God you are not on the Supreme Court.”

"The Biden administration has done all they can to hinder us!"

Katabella Roberts reports,
The Biden administration’s policies are hindering U.S. oil and gas companies from producing energy commodities, driving up the price which in turn results in consumers paying more, according to Jerry Simmons, the president of the Domestic Energy Producer Alliance (DEPA).
Simmons noted that on his first day in office, Biden revoked the Keystone XL oil pipeline contract, a 1,700-mile pipeline that was designed to carry roughly 800,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
“At the same time, the Energy Information Administration just issued a report where they said that currently, worldwide fossil fuels provide between 80 and 85 percent of all the energy consumed. And by 2050, that projection is still at 70 plus percent. So you know, oil, gas, and coal aren’t going to go away anytime soon,” he added.
“But the Biden administration has done all they can to hinder us. We have some tax deductions that we get for doing business in this country that they’re trying to remove, and again, that drives up the cost and when you drive up costs, people stop doing certain businesses, or they increase the cost of doing that business and pass it on to the consumer, which is exactly what’s happening.”
Since the start of this year, gas prices have risen 35 percent amid lower supplies and a surge in demand as pandemic-hit economies around the world reopen, prompting fears that there is simply not enough gas stored up for the winter if temperatures were to be particularly cold in the northern hemisphere.

"Negligence at a minimum!"

Ben Johnson reports in the Daily Wire,
Attorney Andrew Branca of Law of Self Defense similarly weighed in on the Baldwin case, Friday.
The fatal shooting could be argued to be an accident, prove negligence, or be classified as recklessness or involuntary manslaughter — a worst-case scenario for the actor, Branca said in an 18-minute video.
In our hypothetical with the defective gun, for example, it may be true that the discharge of the gun was not foreseeable by Alec Baldwin, and therefore not really in his control—but the direction in which the gun was pointed certainly was in his control.
The death of Ms. Hutchins by the discharge of the gun could not have occurred had the gun not been pointed at her—and that pointing of the gun at her would certainly seem to constitute negligence.
Anyone trained in firearms safety—and anyone handling an inherently dangerous instrument like a firearm can be reasonably expected to have a duty to be trained on its safe operation around others—would know that one of the four primary safety rules of handling firearms is that you do not point the muzzle of the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
Pointing the gun at Ms. Hutchins then, at least under circumstances in which the gun discharges and kills her, would certainly qualify as negligence at a minimum, and thus create civil liability for her death.

Dershowitz: New Mexico killing is likely a homicide

Jay Greenberg of Neon Nettle brings to our attention two articles about the Alec Baldwin killing of his cinematographer on the movie set of "Rust" in New Mexico. Alan Dershowitz opines that the killing is likely a homicide.
Dershowitz asserts at The Hill that “two things” seem clear in the incident: “guidelines seem not to have been followed in this case, and the existing guidelines seem insufficient to prevent accidents like this.”
"It is likely, therefore, that the killing of Halyna Hutchins could constitute a homicide — that is, a criminal killing,” he said.
The evidence is currently unclear as to how a real gun, with a real projectile, was handed to Baldwin, allegedly with an assurance that it was “a cold gun.” Such a verbal assurance does not come close to satisfying what should be the fail-safe standards. Moreover, there is evidence that people on the set were concerned about safety conditions prior to the tragedy. Indeed, some on set reportedly said there were prior incidents of guns misfiring.
It is likely, therefore, that the killing of Halyna Hutchins could constitute a homicide — that is, a criminal killing. The remaining questions are who might be criminally responsible for the killing and what degree of homicide fits the evidence?
At this point in time, everyone must be presumed innocent. But it does not follow from the presumption of innocence that anyone is immune from rigorous investigation. It seems clear that Alec Baldwin was not aware that he was firing a gun capable of expelling a lethal projectile. But his role reportedly was not limited to passively being an actor; he may have had some responsibility as one of several producers of the film. The nature of the role of producers varies from film to film, and it is unlikely that Baldwin’s role included responsibility for set safety. But some may think that it was not simply enough for him to accept the word of an assistant director about the gun’s safety, that he perhaps should have independently inspected the gun before firing it. It is unlikely, however, that such an omission would result in criminal responsibility.
Others on the set almost certainly bore greater responsibility, and their roles should be investigated, their responsibilities pinpointed. Before anyone is charged with a crime, there must be evidence beyond a reasonable doubt of individual criminal culpability. Just because there was a crime, it does not necessarily follow that there is enough evidence to charge any particular individual.

Despicable Pelosi and F.B.I. block Republicans from gathering information on January 6 actions

Mollie Hemingway and Tristan Justice report,
The leading Republican tasked with his party’s investigation into the preparedness and response of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies to the Capitol riot on January 6 is being blocked by President Joseph Biden’s FBI from gathering information, a new document reveals.
Pelosi took what she admitted was an “unprecedented” step of refusing the appointments made by Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, barring Navy officer and Afghanistan veteran Banks and Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, from participation. In a fiery denunciation of Pelosi’s politicization of the committee, McCarthy, R-Calif., publicly announced Banks would lead Republicans’ investigation despite Pelosi blowing up the committee.
On September 3, Banks asked FBI Director Christopher Wray to give Republican lawmakers the same briefing offered to the Democrats on the progress of the agency’s own investigation. Partial findings of the FBI’s independent investigation were leaked to Reuters in August, which found “scant evidence” the Capitol riot was “an organized plot to overturn the president election result.” Wray has not responded to the request.
“Pursuant to the rules of the House of Representatives, the minority party in Congress retains the rights to the same information that is provided to the majority party,” Banks wrote in another letter to Wray on Sept. 16, which was also sent to several other federal agencies such as the Interior Department. “I ask that you provide me any information that is submitted to the Select Committee.” His requests have been met with radio silence across the Biden administration.
“In other words, even the committee knows that its power to seek this information about private citizens lacks any convincing legal justification and, for that reason, wants to ensure that nobody has the ability to seek a judicial ruling on the legality of their actions,” wrote civil libertarian and journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Republicans want to know why the Capitol had faulty riot shields during the attack, why the national guard was called late, why the national guard took three hours to arrive once they were called, and why the FBI did not warn of a potential threat until the night before on Jan. 5.
Pelosi’s Committee, however, has refused to hear testimony from a whistleblower within the Capitol Police as her weaponized probe focuses on private citizen exercise of First Amendment freedoms.

Taxing people for money they have not earned or received!

David Ennocenti writes,
Why Democrats' Scheme to Tax Unrealized Capital Gains Should Terrify You
Our current secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, is busy trying to find a way to tax wealth without calling it taxing wealth. She has eyes on taxing unrealized capital gains. What this means simply is taxing people for money they have not earned or received.
Not only is Janet Yellen considering this, but the Democrat party is on board as well. Democrats claim that it is needed in order to pay for their agenda. You know — the one that President Biden says pays for itself. The idea of taxing you for the income you have not made is also a policy speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi proposes.

And look what happened!

Who's up for a fight?

Today Oregon Muse critiques conservatives.
The Right wants to do politics and be done with it so they can get on with life, while the Left wants to do politics all the time.
And then the Right will either win, or lose. If they lose, they will tend to give up. For example, I remember when we lost the Obergefell decision, somebody on our team, I think it was Marco Rubio, said 'Oh well, I guess we lost. We need to just move on now.' And for that, he should have been primaried the next time he was up for re-election. What a gutless coward. The Right does not have the stomach for a sustained fight. I've heard too many stories of conservatives, say, ousting 2 wacko progressive school board members only to have the progressives come out in force in the next election and take back the board seats that they lost.
The Right is questionably good at winning territory, but is unquestioningly bad at holding territory. Thus the Left's victories are always permanent, but the Right's are temporary at best. Every time we win at the SCOTUS level (i.e. Masterpiece Cakeshop), the ruling is decided on such narrow ground that there's little chance it's going to be able to be used as precedent in any other case.
It's very disheartening. Which is why, I think, the Right tends to give up easily, not willing to expend vast amounts of time and resources for goals that turn out to be fruitless.
Which is perhaps why, when state election officials unconstitutionally rewrote election laws for the 2020 election, we mostly just sat there and watched them do it. The Republicans in the various state legislatures should've screamed bloody murder about this, and perhaps some of them did, but not nearly enough.
Now, I admit that there are a couple of exceptions to this.
The first is the large body of firearms rights advocates and their skill at mobilizing They're always up for a fight, probably because every time there's a shooting with lots of media coverage, lots of idiot politicians suddenly get it into their heads that they way to stop criminals from shooting people is to take away firearms from law-abiding Americans. That'll show them. I hear the Left caterwauling about "the powerful gun lobby" and it makes me smile.
The second is the pro-life movement. They've been fighting for the rights of the unborn since the mid 1970s. They will never, ever give up. And I have to commend Roman Catholics for their steadfastness here. They pretty much jump-started the pro-life movement themselves and have always been rock solid on this issue. On the other hand, we Protestants have much to be embarrassed about. If you look at Protestants as a whole, a disappointingly small number of us are actively pro-life, many of us don't believe we should be involved in politics at all, and another large segment is actively fighting on the other side.
In other words, Protestants are very much like the Republican Party.
So, getting back to Virginia, the only glimmer of hope here is that the Left has chosen a very difficult position to defend. That is, that the state, not parents, has the sole authority to determine the content of their children's education. And I should emphasize that these are tax-paying parents. So the Loudoun County School Board's position (echoed by Terry 'Ratweasel' MacAuliffe) is that the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia need to pay up and shut up. That's it. That's their position. Which is pretty much the textbook definition of taxation without representation and didn't we fight a war over this very issue?
I can't think of a better way to get a continuous stream of parents pounding on your office door than to insist, out loud and in public for all to hear, that you have the right to mess with their kids.

Obama and the AP do their best to minimize Virginia Republican's concerns about boys in skirts raping girls in girls' bathrooms

Ace notes that
The AP is trying to suggest that there's a great deal of confusion about what happened in the girl's bathroom in Virginia. There isn't.
And note they absolutely refuse to state that the alleged rapist was a "boy in a skirt" and that this girl's violation is a direct consequence of permitting boys in skirts into bathrooms, where girls are vulnerable and isolated.
The AP deliberately censors the politically-relevant details of the case to make it sound like Youngkin is just baselessly blaming the left for random sexual assaults.
Meanwhile, campaigning for McAuliffe, Barack Obama claims that teaching kids anti-white racism and anti-male hatred, and allowing boys to trespass into intimate spaces in which girls are alone and vulnerable, is a "trumped up culture war."

Why did Baldwin point a gun whose status he didn’t verify at another person and pull the trigger?

Ian Underwood writes,
Note that, unlike the journalists reporting this story, I used the word negligent instead of the word accidental. An accident is something that happens to you. Negligence is something you do.
The death of Halyna Hutchins and the wounding of Joel Souza were not accidental. They were negligent. The distinction is crucial, and a discussion of Baldwin’s negligence ought to become a standard part of any gun safety course — and his enduring legacy on the issue of gun control.

On their way to the United States

Fauci funds cruel treatment of puppies in North Africa

The White Coat Waste Project, the nonprofit organization that first pointed out that U.S. taxpayers were being used to fund the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology, have now turned its sights on Anthony Fauci on another animal-testing-related matter — infecting dozens of beagles with disease-causing parasites to test an experimental drug on them.
Leading the effort is Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), writing a letter to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) saying the cordectomies are “cruel” and a “reprehensible misuse of taxpayer funds.”
“Our investigators show that Fauci’s NIH division shipped part of a $375,800 grant to a lab in Tunisia to drug beagles and lock their heads in mesh cages filled with hungry sand flies so that the insects could eat them alive. They also locked beagles alone in cages in the desert overnight for nine consecutive nights to use them as bait to attract infectious sand flies.”

Some information about the woman who was killed by Alec Baldwin yesterday

Don Surber provides some background on the woman who was killed by Alec Baldwin in New Mexico yesterday.
We lost a good person who was just reaching her prime. That saddens me. Hollywood has been working with prop guns for more than a century. This is inexcusable.

Many people are commenting on the Alec Baldwin story

Citizen Press has many commenters writing their views about Alec Baldwin today. Below are some samples.
mcd1948 wrote, Had Baldwin not engaged in such reprehensible conduct in the past he just might NOW – MAYBE – be enjoying some support. But, he’s has been so judgmental and hateful towards others over the years that any support he might now get is greatly reduced.
Gravelyvoice Jim wrote, The “conservative” media is rallying around Baldwin as well. I saw Rachael Campos-Duffy on F&F Weekend say this morning that “…it obviously wasn’t Baldwin’s fault…” That’s BULLS#!T. Anyone who handles a firearm is responsible for it’s action. That’s rule #1 in firearm safety. She may as well have said “People don’t kill people, GUNS kill people.” The fact that the ignoramus picked up a firearm, assumed it was safe, pointed it at someone, and pulled the trigger shows how ill prepared these leftist are to handle dangerous tools. It likely was an accident, but ignorance is still no excuse for his negligence. Baldwin as a minimum should be sentenced to 5 years of NRA firearms safe training.
ozoldfart wrote, Baldwin was co producer. There had been issues with safety and non union workers. An unhappy environment ruled by an egotistical ass hat. A single action revolver just doesn’t go off, live ammo or not.
Ed Asaf wrote, Yep. It isnt the fact he shot the gun, its the fact he did nothing when the workers walked off hours earlier because of 3 misfired guns and other safety issues and he ignored it. And he was producing the film, not just starring in it. That is the issue. Jail.
Homecoming Queen wrote, Alec Baldwin is well known for his narcissistic , often violent behaviour toward others & for having no impulse control. Because of his celebrity, he has been allowed to escape responsibility for his actions all his life. Not only is Baldwin the principal actor on this film, he is also the producer. A producer should take extra care that the safety of a film set is the first concern. After all, as producer, your name is associated with the film. When you are handed a gun , it doesn’t matter if you are on a movie set, on a street corner or on a firing range, YOU are responsible for checking the firearm. In this instance, I have no knowledge of what was going through Baldwin’s mind that day, but we do know that Baldwin has a long history of angry, reckless behavior for which he has never been accountable. This is strictly an observation; I’m not saying this particular action was purposeful.
Noxqss77 wrote, Authorities need to stop whitewashing this incident. This was pure NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE. There was NOTHING accidental about this. I hope her husband sues baldwin for everything he’s got.
DunSon wrote, Hey Hollywood Elites: Rule #1: Always treat a gun as if it is loaded Rule #2: Always point your gun down range Rule #3: Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire Rule #4: Never point a gun at someone unless you intend to kill them
PonySoldier wrote, For a split second I felt bad for the guy– but then I became rational again. That self centered prick has used his celebrity to hurt others and promote Marxism for years. He’s a mean, unempathetic jerk.
Edo Tokyo wrote, Alec Baldwin is a hateful person and likely deserves some of the mocking since he is so quick to judge others, but the victims & their families deserve some compassion. Let the investigation move forward and let’s see what happens. Apparently there were some problems on the set which may have led to the accident, whether it was recklessness on Baldwin’s part, neglect by the prop department, or a combination of both.
Pasha wrote, What most people don’t realize is that Alec Baldwin has been an actor for over 40 years and made many films in which he held, and fired, guns. Over that time period he’s had much training and experience in prop guns AND safety. It’s not like this is the first time ever he’s been handed a gun on set and just didn’t know to check it out himself and NOT point it at anyone and pull the trigger. He KNEW all of this. There is NO excuse.

More information on fatal shooting by Alec Baldwin

The Los Angeles Times reports,
Hours before actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot a cinematographer on the New Mexico set of “Rust” with a prop gun, a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions.
The camera operators and their assistants were frustrated by the conditions surrounding the low-budget film, including complaints of long hours, long commutes and collecting their paychecks, according to three people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to comment.
Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed on the “Rust” set near Santa Fe, the sources said. They said at least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to production managers about gun safety on the set.
Three crew members who were present at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set that day said they were particularly concerned about two accidental prop gun discharges on Saturday.
Baldwin’s stunt-double accidentally fired two rounds Saturday after being told that the gun was “cold” — lingo for a weapon that doesn’t have any ammunition, including blanks, one of crew members who witnessed the episode told the Los Angeles Times.
“There should have been an investigation into what happened,” said the crew member. “There were no safety meetings. There was no assurance that it wouldn’t happen again. All they wanted to do was rush, rush, rush.”
A colleague was so alarmed by the prop gun misfires he sent a text message to the unit production manager. “We’ve now had 3 accidental discharges. This is super unsafe.”
Shooting began on Oct. 6 and members of the low-budget film said they had been promised the production would pay for their hotel rooms in Santa Fe. But after filming began, the crews were told they instead would be required to make the 50-mile drive from Albuquerque each day, rather than stay overnight in nearby Santa Fe. That rankled crew members who worried that they might have an accident after spending 12 to 13 hours on the set.
The cinematographer who was accidentally killed, Halyna Hutchins, had been advocating for safer conditions for her team, said one crew member who was on the set and was tearful when the camera crew left.

"What am I doing?"

Jim Kunstler writes about yesterday's "Town Hall" performance by Joe Biden.
The Leader of the Free World wandered the stage, sometimes oddly circling his interlocutor, Anderson Cooper of CNN, who had to step in and rescue the maundering “Joe B,” when he lost himself in thickets of talking points that no amount of rehearsal could avail to untangle. “What am I doing?” he asked more than once, but no one on the scene volunteered to remind him. The “president” frequently assumed poses that signified some kind of gross cognitive dysfunction: head turned down to the floor with his eyes shut… strange, mincing steps in the direction of a fugitive thought… fists balled like a two-year-old resisting some simple instruction… There was a robotic quality to the act, too, as “JB” repeated his place-holder phrase “Here’s the deal” to preface each flight into the murky jargon of Build Back Better.
Meanwhile, the West is seeing the first signs that the Covid-19 vaccines it went cuckoo for may be producing a strange phenomenon of “excess mortality” around the world. Suspiciously higher rates of heart attacks, vascular disorders, cancer, and other bad stuff. It’s downright spooky. In Scotland, for instance, the vaccination rate is 87 percent and weekly deaths are up 30 percent. Pandemic reporter Alex Berenson said on TV that non-Covid-19 deaths were significantly higher everywhere, and he mused out loud that there was some connection between this and the vaccines. Uh oh.
Social media, network media, and legacy print media do not want that story getting around. Some of the most deranged Wokesters across this land greeted the debut of the mRNA vaccines like a holy jubilee of salvation (and still do!). What happens in their psyches when the darn thing bites them in the ass? There’s a fair chance we’re going to find out, and soon.

Inconvenient truths

Strategic Ignorance

Ace of Spades headline this morning: Emails Reveal that National School Board Association Colluded With White House To Draft That Letter Demanding the DOJ Treat Concerned Parents as "Domestic Terrorists"
Ace credits Chuck Ross with the investigative journalism.
This was all a set-up. It was all fugazi. The White House was already primed to order the DOJ to attack concerned parents -- but they didn't want to make it look wholly political. So they put the NSBA into writing a tearful letter for them, filled with ominous tales of parents making "threats," to justify what they were going to do anyway.
Merrick Garland testified -- or testilied, really-- in Congress yesterday. He testilied that he didn't know anything about any of the topics Republicans wanted to talk about. When asked if he was aware of the bathroom sexual assault of the daughter of one of the men the NSBA was accusing of "terrorism," Merrick Garland claimed he'd heard nothing about it. Remember, the National School Board Association specifically named Scott Smith -- the father of the sexually-violated girl -- in its list of "incidents" which they claim justified treating concerned parents as "domestic terrorists." And Merrick Garland, vouched for by National Review's serial voucher Andy McCarthy, claims he just hasn't heard anything about this case.
When asked if he was aware that a leftwing environmental group had stated their own "insurrection" by battering their way into a federal building two weeks ago, Garland similarly claimed he'd never heard the story. This is Strategic Ignorance. This is testilying.
Again, I urge Congress to create an Idiot's Corner where they can send someone to read the law or read recent news when they claim to not know things they don't wish to comment on. Then call them back to the witness chair after their purported ignorance of very basic knowledge has been cured.

Advocating restrictions on liberty in the name of health

The New Neo takes a look at how our response to Covid has transformed our lives.
One of the very first things I said to a friend when the COVID restrictions began was: “We’re all going to end up with OCD.” “OCD” is obsessive-compulsive disorder, and although I was making a joke I was also somewhat serious. My early sense was based on the tenaciousness of OCD symptoms, once induced and adopted. If a person has any tendency towards OCD at all – and a lot of people do even though they haven’t actually displayed OCD symptoms prior to COVID – and that person has been doing a bunch of things that the person thinks has kept that person safe from disease, it can be very hard to give them up. It generally requires an active decision and effort to do so. It’s an effort a lot of people won’t make.
And for some, all of these restrictions offer secondary gains. For example, if a person has any sort of social anxiety, it’s easier to stay away from people, once you’ve gotten used to it. Computers make isolation less onerous, too.
Lastly, youth has been so protected compared to earlier generations. So many diseases have mostly been vanquished that were horrific scourges even in my lifetime – polio, leukemia (which was virtually always a death sentence when I was young, and struck a considerable number of children), and mumps and measles (the latter of which had the possibility of significant and highly serous complications such as encephalitis). These advances are great, but they have made the younger generation less willing to shoulder any health risks, and that makes them more susceptible to advocating restrictions on liberty in the name of health.

Children in 6th grade forced by teachers to duct tape masks to their faces

Facebook has to pay $14 million to the Labor Department because Trump!

Steven Ahle reports,
Almost nine months after he left office, President Trump scores another win for the American worker. His Department of Labor brought charges against Facebook for shutting Americans out of high-paying jobs in order to hire much cheaper foreign labor.
The charges were brought in December of 2020. Facebook will have to pay a $14 million dollar fine and they will have to report all of their open jobs publicly and the Labor Department has oversight of their hiring practices to make sure they comply.
Of the fine $4.5 million went to the Labor Department and the leftover $9.5 million will go to the victims of Facebook’s illegal hiring practice. The $14 million is the largest settlement the agency has ever received.

In-N-Out refuses to become vaccination police in San Francisco

The San Francisco Chronicle reports,
Beloved California burger chain In-N-Out is firing back against San Francisco’s vaccine mandate. The company blasted the city after the Department of Public Health temporarily shut down its Fisherman’s Wharf location on Oct. 14. for not checking customers’ vaccine cards. It’s the only San Francisco restaurant that’s been closed for violating the indoor vaccinate mandate, the health department said.
Despite multiple warnings, In-N-Out employees continued to let customers into the restaurant without verifying their vaccination status since at least late-September. (The city’s indoor vaccine mandate for businesses, including restaurants, went into effect on Aug. 20). In-N-Out acknowledged the enforcement violation, calling San Francisco’s indoor vaccination requirement “intrusive, improper, and offensive” governmental “overreach.”
“We refuse to become the vaccination police for any government,” In-N-Out’s Chief Legal and Business Officer Arnie Wensinger said in a statement. “It is unreasonable, invasive, and unsafe to force our restaurant associates to segregate customers into those who may be served and those who may not, whether based on the documentation they carry, or any other reason.”

Do prosecutors even want to see proof of influence peddling by Bidens?

Jonathan Turley wonders if prosecutors are ever going to see the elephant in the room.
This week marked the anniversary of one of the greatest political tricks in history: the disappearance of Hunter Biden scandal. New emails were released that added new details to what was a raw influence peddling operation that netted millions from foreign sources. A new tranche of emails connecting President Joe Biden to key accounts prove just how this political sleight of hand was worthy of Houdini. After all, Houdini only made an elephant disappear. The Bidens made the equivalent to an entire circus disappear in front of an audience of millions.
The laptop is, of course, now recognized as genuine even by some of the early deniers. Hunter remains under criminal investigation for possible tax and money laundering violations. But the greatest “reveal” is the person referred to as “the Big Guy” and “Celtic” in these emails: President Biden.
Recently released emails reference payments to President Biden from son’s accounts and indicate the possible commingling of funds. Even more embarrassing, the shared account may have been used to pay a Russian prostitute named “Yanna.” In one text, a former secret service agent warns Hunter (who was holed up with a prostitute in an expensive hotel) “Come on H this is linked to Celtic’s account.”
First, it is widely believed that Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden, received millions in influence peddling. For his part, Hunter only had influence and access to sell. He admits that he was a crack addict and alcoholic all the way up to the start of his father’s presidential campaign — in his words, “Drinking a quart of vodka a day by yourself in a room is absolutely, completely debilitating,” as well as “smoking crack around the clock.”
Houdini once said that “It is still an open question . . . as to what extent exposure really injures a performer.” The same question can be asked about a politician. President Biden is in full display in these emails. The question is whether the public – or the prosecutors – want to see him.
Read the whole thing here: https://jonathanturley.org/2021/10/19/joe-biden-and-the-disappearing-elephant-how-to-make-a-full-sized-scandal-vanish-in-front-of-an-audience-of-millions/

Are the good times over for Joe Biden?

Pat Buchanan asks,
How are Democrats responding to the return of inflation?
By trying to pile a $3.5 trillion social spending package on top of a $1.2 trillion infrastructure package on top of the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief act Biden signed in March. Coupled with an easy-money Fed policy, this hand could play out for Biden the way it played out for former President Jimmy Carter.
A second issue that appears beyond the capacity of the Biden people to solve is the invasion from across our southern border. Nightly film of border crossers and their encounters with the Border Patrol have riveted the attention of the nation.

Priorities in Covid policy

Anthony Matoria writes,
One of the discoverers of ivermectin, Satoshi Omura, who was awarded a Nobel Prize for his accomplishment, reportedly approached Merck about conducting a large, rigorous trial of ivermectin in the treatment of COVID in Japan. Merck declined. Governments are spending billions on COVID-related interventions, yet they show no interest in even a preliminary study of ivermectin.
The response to the COVID pandemic has produced a number of distressing and questionable policies: mandates, lockdowns, threatening people's jobs, and contributing to the psychological effects of uncertainty and increasing authoritarianism. The response to COVID has been associated with its own detriments, even if one wishes to assume that these were unavoidable or, on balance, necessary. Given these costs, however, the dismissal of potential therapies on grounds of "no evidence," coupled with a refusal to investigate such evidence, suggests that the priorities in COVID policy do not begin with public health.

Truth, Justice, and Better living Through Chemistry!

Glenn Beaton reports,
The New York Times – formerly America’s “newspaper of record” – has designed several new flags to replace the old torn and tired one. Such as a rainbow one to symbolize our diversity, a green one to show our enviro-correctness and . . . you get the idea. None of the NYT substitutes symbolizes freedom or liberty, because freedom and liberty are dog whistles for racism and intolerance.
Don’t count on Superman saving either motherhood or the flag. DC Comics announced that Superman’s motto, “Truth, Justice and the American Way” is being scrapped. “Truth” stays, because of course “truth” is now whatever the left says it is. Because science. See discussion supra re men who give birth. “Justice” can stay as well because that will now mean the social kind.
But “the American Way” has gotta go. It’s irredeemable. It cannot mean anything other than racism, Corvettes, Republicans, apple pie, misogyny, homophobia, Trumpism, corndogs, Texas and halitosis.
Dupont used to have an advertising slogan, “Better Living through Chemistry.” The glue-sniffing, pot-addled, power-drunk, woke-oholic, ballot-harvesting, feelgood-addicted, meth monsters of the left will someday sober up and reactivate whatever neurons have survived the chemical onslaught to which they’ve been subjected, and tinker a bit with Superman’s new slogan. Expect “Truth, Justice and Better Living through Chemistry.”
