Fast and Furious

Mexico's President Lopez Obrador is asking the Trump administration for help in learning more about the Obama administration's Fast and Furious endeavor. Was it a scheme to stop cross-border smuggling? Glenn Reynolds writes,

...It was a scheme to send traceable guns to Mexico where their use in crime would be an excuse for stricter gun laws in America. It was another political abuse of law enforcement power, of the sort that was common under Obama, and the Trump Administration should help Mexico get to the bottom of it, and ensure that the wrongdoers are punished appropriately.

Paul Sperry reports in the New York Post,

...Fast and Furious was a Justice Department program that allowed assault weapons — including .50-caliber rifles powerful enough to take down a helicopter — to be sold to Mexican drug cartels allegedly as a way to track them. But internal documents later revealed the real goal was to gin up a crisis requiring a crackdown on guns in America. Fast and Furious was merely a pretext for imposing stricter gun laws.

Only the scheme backfired when Justice agents lost track of the nearly 2,000 guns sold through the program and they started turning up at murder scenes on both sides of the border — including one that claimed the life of US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

While then-Attorney General Eric Holder was focused on politics, people were dying. At least 20 other deaths or violent crimes have been linked to Fast and Furious-trafficked guns.

The program came to light only after Terry’s 2010 death at the hands of Mexican bandits, who shot him in the back with government-issued semiautomatic weapons. Caught red-handed, “the most transparent administration in history” flat-out lied about the program to Congress, denying it ever even existed.

Jesse Watters does a good job summarizing some of the events of last week. I did not even know about the Fast and Furious revelations last week. Did you? A damning new report released by the House Oversight Committee suggests that Eric Holder and the DOJ withheld information from Congress. They were more concerned about spinning the story to deflect attention away from themselves. The 259-page report clearly documents obstruction of justice and obstruction of Congress's investigation. Media silence, except for Watter's World.

Fighting to learn the truth

Judicial Watch (JW) has become an irreplaceably valuable instrument in the giht for the salvation of our republic. Today they reveal what they have learned from documents they received after filing a lawsuit to try to learn the truth about the Fast and Furious coverup.

Practically lost in the 1,000-plus pages of records is an index that shows Jarrett was brought in to manage the fact that Holder lied to Congress after the story about the disastrous gun-running operation broke in the media. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ran the once-secret program that allowed guns from the U.S. to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels. Instead, federal law enforcement officers lost track of hundreds of weapons which have been used in an unknown number of crimes, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Arizona.

The files received by JW include three electronic mails between Holder and Jarrett and one from former U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke to Jarrett. The e-mails with Holder are all from October 4, 2011, a significant date because, on the evening of October 3rd, Sheryl Attkisson (then at CBS news) released documents showing that Holder had been sent a briefing paper on Operation Fast and Furious on June 5, 2010. The paper was from the director of the National Drug Intelligence Center, Michael Walther.

This directly contradicted Holder’s May 3, 2011 testimony to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, during which he stated that he, “probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks.” The October 4, 2011 date may also be significant because it came shortly after the August 30, 2011 resignation of U.S. Attorney for Arizona Dennis Burke and reassignment of acting ATF director Kenneth Melson to the position of “senior forensics advisor” at DOJ.

Sharyl Attkison resigns from CBS

Politico is reporting that hard-hitting CBS reporter Sharyl Attkison has resigned from CBS. She is working on a book tentatively entitled “Stonewalled: One Reporter’s Fight for Truth in Obama’s Washington.” She investigated Benghazi and Fast and Furious. Her work and personal computers were hacked.
