Kids today are less fit

The American Heart Association has analyzed a number of studies that show children's fitness has declined around the world, and that children of today are not as fit as their parents were at the same age. Duh! How could this be? I did not have television until I was at least ten years old, and the the only thing I had to watch was Howdy Doody! Do you think that would have prevented me from spending all of my time outside? No!

Marilynn Marchione writes the story for the Associated Press:

Heart-related fitness has declined 5 percent per decade since 1975 for children ages 9 to 17.

"Many schools, for economic reasons, don't have any physical education at all. Some rely on recess" to provide exercise.

Obesity likely plays a role, since it makes it harder to run or do aerobic exercise. Too much time watching television and playing video games and unsafe neighborhoods also may play a role.
