Humanist?

A rally will be held today after school on a public sidewalk in Douglas County, Colorado, where I live. Why? Because parents at the school, Sky View Academy, were sent an email from the school administrators telling the parents that the school will no longer participate in a Christmas program to help disadvantaged children. The school took the action because it received a letter from the American Humanist association threatening a lawsuit if it participated in Operation Christmas Child, run by a nondenominational Christian organization which sends shoeboxes filled with hygiene items, candy, gifts and a Gospel message to children around the world.

Ryan Parker writes in the Denver Post about today's rally:

Ruth VanSant, whose daughter Michaela was one of the founding members of the group to participate in Operation Christmas Child, said the students' compassion has not been stifled.

"This is still happening," she said.

Parents and students will be collecting for Operation Christmas Child before and after school, near the building on public property, VanSant said.
