Please explain this to me!

Over ten thousand people participated in a "Zombie Crawl" yesterday in downtown Denver. I believe this all started with the Twilight series of books, which has grown to video games, movies and t.v. shows. I don't get it. Where is the social psychologist who can explain this phenomena?
