Do we want the "solipsistic narrative" to continue?

Wow! Take a look at this Newsweek cover! Yes, Newsweek! Better yet, read this comprehensive cover story article by Niall Ferguson: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/08/19/niall-ferguson-on-why-barack-obama-needs-to-go.html

The motivation for the cover story seems to be Ferguson's disappointment in Obama's record, and his excitement that Romney had the wisdom to choose Paul Ryan as his running mate.

Near the end of his article, Ferguson writes:
"The voters now face a stark choice. They can let Barack Obama’s rambling, solipsistic narrative continue until they find themselves living in some American version of Europe, with low growth, high unemployment, even higher debt—and real geopolitical decline.
Or they can opt for real change: the kind of change that will end four years of economic underperformance, stop the terrifying accumulation of debt, and reestablish a secure fiscal foundation for American national security."

I went to Wikipedia to read the long discussion of what it means to be solipsistic. Here are a few of the explanations that are presented in that discussion.
" Solipsism (Listeni/ˈsɒlɨpsɪzəm/) is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist. Thoughts and concepts are all that exist, and furthermore, only the solipsist's own thoughts and consciousness exist. If the last surviving person is a solipsist, he or she will believe that even when others were alive, there never had been another thought, experience or emotion other than his or her own. Solipsism is not a single concept but instead refers to several worldviews whose common element is some form of denial of the existence of a universe independent from the mind of the agent. Possibly the most controversial feature of the solipsistic worldview is the denial of the existence of other minds."
