How important is integrity?

Innominatus blogs about Barry Obama's apparent lies about his own bio: "I was traipsing around the blogosphere and hit this Protein Wisdom link to a bit of investigation done by Doug Ross.  Gist of the story:  Ross dug around in web archives, looking for changes in Obama's "literary bio" - the junk that goes inside or on the back of a book jacket...

Turns out those bios were edited several times, marking such things as barry's ascension through State Senator, US Senator, etc...    The "born in Kenya..." parts remained after each edit, right up until 2 weeks before barry declared his intentions to run for the presidency - at which time it just went away and became "born in Hawaii..."

"I care what I think about me - which influences dictates my treatment of others, particularly those I love.  Hence I can't even begin to understand how a person like barry could so cavalierly misrepresent the self.  To assert a false self implies that the genuine self is lacking.  I would consider that the ultimate betrayal, made worse because it was done by me, against me.  It would be a thousand times more preferable to shape and adjust my life until I WAS what I wanted to be, than to shrug off that effort and just claim it, while knowing otherwise.

It is further boggling that such a man could end up in the nation's highest office.  It would eat at me continually if I attained so much only by BSing people about who I really am.  If barry has so little respect for something as important as the self, how can he be expected to respect anything external?  Like Rights.  Institutions.  Laws.  This flaw of his is much more important than what patch of dirt Stanley birthed him on."

A coalition of geologists are challenging the way we look at global stone reserves, claiming that, unless smarter methods of preservation are developed, mankind will eventually run out of rocks.

“If we do not stop using them up at our current rate, rocks as we know them will be a thing of the past,” renowned geologist Henry Kaiser said at a press conference Tuesday. “Igneous, metamorphic, even sedimentary: all of them could be gone in as little as 500,000 years.”

“Think about it,” Kaiser added. “When was the last time you even saw a boulder?”
The scientists warned that, although people have long considered the world’s rock supply to be inexhaustible, it has not created a significant number of new rocks since the planet cooled some 3.5 billion years ago. Moreover, the earth’s rocks have been very slowly depleting in the last century due to growing demand for fireplace mantels, rock gardens, gravel, and paperweights.

Kaiser claims that humanity has “wreaked havoc” on the earth’s stones by picking them up, carrying them around, and displacing them from their natural habitat.
“A rock can take millions of years to form, but it only takes a second for someone to skip a smooth pebble into a lake, and then it is gone.” Dr. Kaiser said. “Perhaps these thoughtless rock-skippers don’t care if they leave our planet completely devoid of rocks, but what about our children? Don’t they deserve the chance to hold a rock and toss it up and down a few times?”

Gateway Pundit reports that Democrats are busing in voters from Minnesota and Michigan to bolster their vote in today's recall election against Republican Governor Scott Walker. Big government thuggery

This Idaho couple decided to try to build a vacation home near a lake in Iowa. They hauled in fill dirt in anticipation of the construction of their home. However, they were soon visited by bureaucrats from the Environmental Protection Agency and told they would be fined $75,000.00 per day until they 1.) Removed the fill-dirt, 2.) Seeded the ground with “wetlands” plants, 3.) Fenced it for three-to-five years, then 4.) Apply for an “after-the-fact” permit from the EPA which they’d be unlikely to obtain. In March the Supreme Court shot down the bureaucrats 9-0.

Mitt Romney has chosen liberal Republican Michael Leavitt to lead his presidential transition team. A lot of commentary focuses on his “Obamacare-lovin” proclivities.
Leavitt also has a government-lovin record as governor of Utah from 1993 to 2003, according to Cato’s biennial Fiscal Policy Report Cards. Cato graded Leavitt five times, and his scores were pretty dismal:

1998: C
1996: C
1996: C
In the reports, Steve Moore and coauthors say such things as “Leavitt is a big spender extraordinaire” and “Leavitt has shown time and again that he is to the left of his party.”
Leavitt apparently favored lots more school spending, and opposed school vouchers.
The Cato reports also say that Leavitt supported a few paltry tax cuts, but blocked larger tax cuts from the legislature, while pushing for higher taxes on Internet users, cigarette consumers, and automobile owners through higher gas and car fees.

This is not good. Whether an administration chooses between pro- and anti-market policies many hundreds of times during its tenure depends upon the people chosen at the highest levels by incoming presidents. Even Ronald Reagan had many “enemies within” his administration that undermined his generally smaller-government approach to policy. Romney appears to be no Reagan, so liberals within his administration would probably have even more free range to cause trouble.

Exploring Obama's ties to Ayres

Breitbart has uncovered the fact that Obama attended a July 4 2005 party at the home of terrorists Bill Ayres and Bernadine Dohrn. It has also uncovered the fact that Obama, as a member of three boards in Chicago helped funnel three million dollars to Ayres and his brother. Breitbart concludes, "Ayers methods have certainly changed since the 60s, but his commitment to bringing down the American system has been a constant throughout his life. Therefore, it's fair to ask what Obama saw in Ayers, the committed anti-capitalist radical. It's also fair to ask why the NY Times (and the rest of the media) were so quick to dismiss the import of the connection. No one is saying Obama and Ayers were part of a secret cabal, but they do seem to have been friends over a period of years, so presumably they had something in common. Given Ayers' consistently extreme views on America and government, isn't that worth exploring?"

Media uses Obama bio as a weapon against Romney

Obama's literary agency featured a bio of Obama in 1991 that said he was born in Kenya. Obama surely must have looked at that bio once or twice, wouldn't you think? But he did not delete it until two months after he announced his run for the presidency in 2007!

Donald Trump raised the issue yesterday: "He didn’t know he was running for president, so he told the truth,” Trump said about Obama’s birthplace, basing his assertion on a literary biography written for Obama that was recently unearthed by Breitbart.com. “The literary agent wrote down what he said… He said he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia… Now they’re saying it was a mistake. Just like his Kenyan grandmother said he was born in Kenya, and she pointed down the road to the hospital, and after people started screaming at her she said, ‘Oh, I mean Hawaii.’ Give me a break.”

Breitbart had the exclusive story. Here is what they have to say about the subsequent coverage (or lack thereof) of the story:  "Whether a sitting President of the United States who, as a grown man, (Obama turned 30 in 1991) might have spruced up his bio to look more exotic or allowed others to do it for him, is a legitimate line of inquiry -- especially after what we've learned about Elizabeth Warren and most especially after the Washington Post declared relevant Mitt Romney's high school days from almost a half-century ago. Update: Left-wing blog Daily Kos ran with a story this weekend that Scott Walker got a woman pregnant when he was a college student, then abandoned her and the baby. Only one problem: the woman says that he is not the father of the baby. Who spread the rumor? A college professor.

Jihadist Muslims continue to kill Christians and Jews. This morning in Nigeria a suicide car bomber drove into a church, killing fifteen people. A Muslim mob killed three Jewish children in France, beating them with hammers and iron bars. That brings the total to 140 violent acts committed against Jews since the mass murder this year of Jews by Jihadist Muhammed Merah. Fearing blasphemy laws, the media refers to the killers by geography: "Asian" or "North African," or, in the U.S., by nationality. In Sweden an Iranian man recently cut off his wife's lips and ate them, because he believed she was having an affair.

Was Coffman right?

Colorado Congressman Mike Coffman is up for re-election in a district that has been redrawn to make it more competitive between Republicans and Democrats. At a meeting out in the rural area where I live he was asked about Obama's place of birth. He answered that he did not know, but that he believed Obama was not American "in his heart." The Democrats tipped off the media, who have been all over the story. A Denver t.v. station caption it on-screen as "Coffman's birther moment." Detecting dark matter

Scientists are still trying to discover the origins of the universe. The latest attempt will be soon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The old Homestake Gold Mine has been turned into a lab to do experiments in dark matter. They will be using a dark matter detector. Why? "Regular matter—people and planets, for example—make up about 4 percent of the total mass-energy of the universe. Scientists estimate that dark matter makes up about 25 percent." If they can detect the dark matter, "it could explain why the universe isn't made up equally of matter and antimatter. That, in turn, could explain how the world as we know it came to be."

"Dark matter is too sensitive to detect in normal laboratories, but one so far underground would help shield it from pesky cosmic radiation. Also, the LUX detector is submerged in water, further insulating it."

Muslim sex crimes in Britain

Nine Muslims have been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing children in England. It is the tip of an iceberg: "just three days after the nine Muslims from Rochdale were sentenced to prison, Greater Manchester Police arrested another nine Muslims, aged between 24 and 38, on suspicion of sexually abusing a child. And on May 19, police arrested two more Muslims, both aged 33, on suspicion of sexual assault and rape."

Social workers and other officials at first refused to respond, for fear of being called racist. "This is an absolute scandal. They were petrified of being called racist and so reverted to the default of political correctness. They had a greater fear of being perceived in that light than in dealing with the issues in front of them."

"Rather than acknowledge that there is a problem, Muslim groups in Britain have decided to play the victim card instead. They are also working overtime to try to silence public discussion about Muslim sex crimes in Britain by branding critics as "far right racists" and "Islamophobic."

It's Bush's fault...and the Israelis

The New York Times has published an article describing the use of cyberwarfare by Presidents Bush and Obama. The target? Iran's nuclear facilities. Bush gets the blame, of course. Those poor Iranians were frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations, so they just had no choice other than to develop their nuclear enrichment program. Israel was involved, too. In fact, Joe Biden believes the Israelis were responsible for the virus getting out of control and spreading throughout the world, thus revealing its existence.The article is adapted from Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power, which is to be published by Crown Tuesday.

I am enjoying Tom Brokaw's book Boom, about the decade following the assassination of JFK. Of course, Brokaw's sympathies are mostly with the liberal left, but it is fun to relive with him that turbulent decade, in which almost daily it seemed that Boom, another big event was taking place. There is no doubt that we have an obesity problem, and that sugary foods are major contributors. It is my observation that it is more of a problem with women. I did a little survey the other day, certainly not a scientific one. In one half hour the total number of obese women outnumbered fit women by three to one. Fit men outnumbered obese men by two to one. Anyone else have observations on this subject?

Update: Glenn Beck played tape of Mayor Bloomberg today (June 1) saying that his ban was only applicable in restaurants, and nothing would prevent a patron from ordering two 16 ounce drinks. So why the ban, then? Bloomberg said it was to "force people" to think about the choices they were making and the consequences.

Poppies on Memorial Day

On Memorial Day I woke up and looked out my window. This is what I saw: the poppies had popped open in bright orange glory! I had been watering them faithfully every day in anticipation of lots of blooms. They will only last about a week longer, so I am enjoying them while they are in bloom.

The human spirit

Field Day. It has to be one of the best days of the school year for elementary and middle school kids. It signifies the end of the school year. This year's Field Day in Worthington, Ohio was extra special. Matt, a kid with spastic cerebral palsy, chose to compete in a two lap race around the field. Matt gave the two lap race everything he had, and did not quit until his gym teacher gathered him up in his arms at the end of the race. The gym teacher stayed with Matt throughout the race, offering support and encouragement. Then, one-by-one, other students joined the gym teacher, cheering Matt on. By his personal example, that teacher has taught those kids what is truly important in life.

Do you like basketball? We could be getting close to something interesting. The San Antonio Spurs are breaking all NBA records with their nineteen game winning streak. The last day of school

Yesterday was the last day of school. All three kids really enjoyed their last day, but only Sara wishes she could still be going to school. "School was fun for me. I don't want it to end! I got the award of being first best reader in the whole class!"

Jon said the last day was great, because it was the last day, and because "We did nothing!" Greg said, "Our teacher asked what we liked best about fifth grade. Everybody said it was having her as our teacher, because nobody could think of anything good about it." Greg said he got "all A's and B's." Jon said he got "all A's and B's...and C's."

Too close to call

The Enterprise Blog has several maps of the U.S., showing what various experts are expecting regarding the 2012 election. There seems to be a consensus that Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia, and Florida are too close to call. Thus, Obama is back in Colorado again tomorrow for fundraising.

Rich Lowry writes at The Corner that "Hispanics are roughly 26 percent of all births in the U.S., blacks 15 percent, and Asians 4 percent. These categories aren’t quite as clear-cut as advertised. Students record teacher yelling

Nowadays kids are armed to the teeth with mobile devices. When their teacher yelled at them for saying Obama bullied someone, some North Carolina students caught it all on the webcam and uploaded it onto You Tube. The teacher has now been suspended. By the way, the information about Obama bullying a girl came from Obama himself, if he is the author of his autobiography. As I understand it, Obama admits in his book that he pushed a girl, who was black, whom other students accused him of liking. Here is the You Tube video capturing the audio of the teacher yelling. She obviously did not know she was being recorded.

Fun times in Denver

One of the things the kids and I enjoyed doing this Spring was going to watch the Denver Nuggets play basketball. Stepson Erik joined us on a recent night. Of course, the boys loved to jump on his back as we went back to the parking lot after the game. Erik is finishing up his two year tech college course in diesel mechanics, while working full time at a Grease Monkey. I am very fond and proud of him, as I am of his brother, Thomas, who drives an eighteen wheeler truck all over the United States.

At the Pepsi Center, where the Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche NHL hockey team play their home games, there are fun things to do, like pretending you are on one of the teams.

A day in Colorado Springs

When I learned that the kids would be here on Friday, May 18, I got somebody to work my shift, and began plotting a day of fun in Denver. One of our favorite things to do is to go shoot pool and have a great meal at the Wynkoop Brewery. Then we like to go to the Denver Library and/or The Tattered Cover Book Store.

But, Friday morning I received a phone call from Jon saying that Colleen was working in Colorado Springs, and he wondered if I could meet them there. I said sure, got in the car and headed south, instead of north.  I thought of fun things we could do there. How about visiting and taking a tour of the USA Olympic Training Facility? I had read that Mark Spitz is there training for this summer's London Olympics. Maybe we could catch a glimpse of him flying through the water! We joined up with a tour group, but Jon was bored; too much like school! So, we just explored on our own. Greg saw something that looked like monkey bars, going around in a big circle. He made it all the way around!

I asked the kids if they would like to go to the zoo, which I remembered is on the side of Cheyenne Mountain, where NORAD is located. To my delight, they enthusiastically wanted to go to the zoo! Usually, when kids approach middle school age, they get all sophisticated and poo poo ideas like going to zoos. I was so thankful my kids do not have that pseudosophistication yet. Jon loved playing tug of war with a giraffe, who thought Jon was trying to feed him a leaf! The zoo is located in a lush mountainside setting.

Near the zoo is the spectacular Seven Falls. We checked it out. It is in a steep canyon. You can actually ride an elevator to the top. Of course, the boys preferred to run up and down the steep stairs, but I think Sara preferred the elevator. The seven falls can barely be seen at the top of this blogpost.

We finished the day in Colorado Springs eating delicious sandwiches at Schlotskys Deli then stopped at Wal-Mart to buy a new football for the boys. When we got home the boys still had energy to toss the football and play some basketball, while I tucked Sara in. Sara and I shared spiritual philosophies with each other, before saying our prayers. She has some wonderful ideas about God's love. Later, the boys were finally also ready to be tucked in. Another day of cherished memories.

Choosing love

I had a wonderful day with my boys, Jon and Greg, and my daughter, Sara, on Friday. I will write about it when I get some photos ready to post. I am just overcome with joy and thanksgiving when I get the chance to be with them.

If your heart has been broken, do you close it back up? How about leaving it open in a stabilized way, so that you can choose to love, and not wait for someone to have to pry it open to give you love? I can be the one who chooses to love. In and of itself, that choice is good for me, regardless of what the other person does. It is something I am really working hard on.

Today I met one of Jon's previous teachers when he lived here with me. She was so sweet. She asked me how Jon was doing in New Mexico. I told her the truth: he does not like school. She was not surprised, because he did not like school here, either. Jon likes to set his own agenda. I will be writing about that when I post the photos. I had a great talk with his former teacher. She told me she really misses Jon and Greg. She said, "Jon is a great writer, just like you!" I started to cry, because I miss those kids terribly, and I appreciated her kind words.

May 20 annular solar eclipse

On the afternoon of Sunday, May 20, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, creating an annular solar eclipse. This won't be a total eclipse; a small ring of the Sun will still be visible. Millions of people from China through North America will be able to see the eclipse. It'll be especially visible in the southwestern United States starting around 6:30p.m. PDT.

Very important: Do not look directly at the sun! Ever! If you do not have a pair of eclipse glasses, try this:

Do-it-yourself pinhole projector
The cheapest way to view the eclipse is to get your hands on two pieces of cardboard and a pen. Take the pen and poke a hole in the center of one of the pieces of cardboard. Then stand with your back to the Sun and hold the cardboard with the hole in it up to the Sun while letting the light pass through the hole onto the other piece of cardboard.

What you'll get is an image of the Sun projected onto the cardboard. As the annular eclipse starts to happen, you'll slowly see a dark shape start to pass over the projected Sun. This is the Moon. Eventually, you'll only see a slim outline of the Sun when the eclipse reaches its height. Be careful not to look directly into the hole you poked, however; that's just as dangerous as if looking at the Sun itself.

Muslim voters changing the political dynamics of Europe

Muslim voters are changing Europe.
"According to a survey of 10,000 French voters conducted by the polling firm OpinionWay for the Paris-based newspaper Le Figaro, an extraordinary 93% of French Muslims voted for Hollande on May 6. By contrast, the poll shows that only 7% of French Muslims voted for the incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy.
An estimated 2 million Muslims participated in the 2012 election, meaning that roughly 1.7 million Muslim votes went to Hollande rather than to Sarkozy. In the election as a whole, however, Hollande won over Sarkozy by only 1.1 million votes. This figure implies that Muslims cast the deciding votes that thrust Hollande into the Élysée Palace."

In Denmark, Socialist Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt won the parliamentary election in September 2011 by a margin of just 8,500 votes. In Britain, a new research report entitled, "Degrees of Separation: Ethnic minority voters and the Conservative Party," shows that 47% of Muslims say they have affinity for the Labour Party, while on 5% say they identify with the Conservatives. During the 2010 elections, Muslim voters were the deciding factor in 82 constituencies."

O'Reilly talks to Miller

Bill O'Reilly tells Dennis Miller that if he were at the same table with Barack Obama he could make oblique references that Obama would not get. Without missing a beat, Miller said, "You mean like balancing the budget?"
