There was a sentencing hearing today in Jefferson County, a suburb west of Denver. This man was three months shy of his 18th birthday when he kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and dismembered a ten-year-old girl. Today he was sentenced to life in prison, plus 85 years.
His obsession with child pornography began when he was 12-years-old. Did he get therapy? Yes, he was first sent to therapy after his mother found child pornography on his computer in 2008. Sadie Gurman reports in the Denver Post:
On Sigg's iPhone, detectives found sexually explicit pictures and videos of children as well as scenes of sexual bondage, rape and dismembered human remains. My sons have to be content to play on a thousand acres of cedar and juniper-covered hills, canyons, and arroyos near Santa Fe, New Mexico, while being "the only kids in our whole school who don't have our own iPhones or computers."Sigg said it started off "slow and all normal and everything." But then, "it took a hold of me and it just started growing. ... after I got done seeing my Christian therapist, psychiatrist, whatever you want to call it, after that I — I thought I had a grip for a little while and then it probably lasted not even a month and then I went back to it."
Sigg's doctors sent his father a note in 2009 urging him to control his son's access to television and computers. They assured his parents that their son's addiction was "not a matter Austin alone could manage." But Sigg's defense attorneys argued his parents ignored those pleas and were more likely to "scream and shame" him than help.
