There is a woman who works four hours a day as a cashier in the store where I work. She is 84-years-old. She has worked retail her whole life, beginning in a grocery store at age sixteen. She owned a flower shop at one point in her career.
A young man was in the store the other day, seeking to steal over a thousand dollars worth of electronic items. His method was to take the barcode sticker off of one low price object and put it over the barcode sticker of a more expensive item. He looked around for the cashier he thought would be most vulnerable to his sleight-of-hand. He picked my friend, who I described in the first paragraph. Big mistake.
He took the first item out of his cart and placed it on the belt for the cashier to scan. She noticed the item and the price. The item was a cell phone, and the price was three dollars! She excused herself and went over to another register and dialed the operator, telling the operator to get somebody from electronics up there right away. As it happened, three members of management were in electronics, and responded right away to the call.
She showed management the first item. They then looked through the rest of the items in the cart, and found what he had been doing.
I asked her what her secret was. She said, "I pay attention to detail!"
Kudos to her, and kudos to the store for being smart enough to keep her employed there!
