Freedom wasn't free

Freedom Summer by Bruce Watkins, ends on an optimistic note. It chronicles the struggles of black Mississippians and civil rights volunteers who came to Mississippi in 1963 and 1964 to help with voter registration, teach in Freedom Schools, and live in sharecroppers' shacks. Despite the murders, the burning of black churches, the constant intimidation, by the time the book was published in 2010, enough progress had been made that Mississippi now leads all other states in the number of blacks holding public office! The book follows the lives of key players in the movement, describing what they experienced in the 1960s, and what happened to them and others in later years. The photo above is of Fannie Lou Hamer.
