Why call it the Chinese flu?

President Trump is being criticized for calling it the Chinese flu. Why call it that? Ace of Spades might have an answer:

Gee, I don't know, maybe because China covered up the existence of the virus for critical weeks -- critical weeks in which infected Chinese nationals or travelers to China went all over the world like Johnny Appleseeds of the plague.
