Troubling conclusions

The firing of John Derbyshire by National Review is being commented upon by numerous writers in the blogosphere. Here is an observation by Professor Mondo: In many respects, this reminds me of the differences my mom observed about Southern and Northern varieties of racism. “In the South”, she said, “folks say they dislike a race, but are pretty likely to have friends of that race. If you ask them about it, they’ll say, ‘Oh, So-and-so is one of the “good ones”.’ In the North, folks’ll profess their belief in love and brotherhood, and talk about those terrible racist Southerners, but their lives are as white as a Klan meeting.” She (and I) found neither of these attractive. Luckily, I have no nearby cornfield!

While enjoying reading a new blog (new, for me) Look! A Baby Wolf!, I read this cartoon, which, if you click on it, you might be able to read. It reminded me of my neighbor, who, though not the same gender as the woman in the cartoon, is similarly shaped. He sits on his ATV and slowly goes around his entire fenced five acres picking up things that the wind has brought onto his property. That is, after he mows every square inch down to ground level. The Democrat Campaign Strategist!

Democrat strategist Hillary Rosen really stepped in it with her attack on Ann Romney never having to "work a day in her life.". I heard Rush Limbaugh today do a superb job of defending Ann, who has had cancer and still struggles with Multiple Sclerosis. Ann, herself, came back strong in a Fox News interview. She portrayed her husband, the likely GOP candidate, as a person who listens to women and has always had women in high-ranking positions on his various staffs. The Romneys have raised five boys.

Rosen has been a frequent visitor to the White House (over thirty times), while General Petraeus has been there only 9 times! Rosen will be under the bus very soon.

Ineptocracy

Please don't get sidetracked!

Now the focus on Mormonism will explode. The fact that they believe God, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus are Three, rather than One, is something the rest of us are supposed to consider to be appalling. The fact that they baptize dead people is likewise supposed to be something that is anathema. And on and on it goes. This is a political contest to elect the President of the United States, not a test of purity of religious thought. I hate to see religious people get sidetracked into these debates, when our focus should be to rid our nation of Sociopathy.

Double bind

On successive days recently both Romney and Obama addressed the Society of Newspaper Editors. Obama allowed photographers to get close. He was loose and personable. Romney kept photographers 150 feet away while he spoke, and entered the room to a Sousa march. It was off-putting to the press covering the event. He surely knows they are in the tank for Obama, and will continue to be, no matter how personable he becomes. He also knows that the press has lost the respect and attention of the American people. If people buy newspapers, it is for the coupons that will enable them to get 25 cents off their chips at the grocery store. Yet, the media frame the story that is put out to the American people.

Trisomy 18

Rick Santorum and his wife chose not to abort their baby when she was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a birth defect that kills 90 percent of babies born with it before they reach their first birthday. Because of their congenital heart diseases, their lungs fill up and they get pneumonia and infections. Rick has chosen to be with his daughter at the hospital, where she is being treated for pneumonia, instead of campaigning in his home state of Pennsylvania. Polls show that many Pennsylvanians are sympathetic and supportive, so Romney wisely has pulled his notorious attack ads that have worked so well for him in so many states. Santorum is scheduled to return to the campaign trail today, so the attack ads will return, also.

Amen I say to you there are some of them that drive SUVs and eat cheeseburgers that shall not taste death till they see Obama eating arugula and taking high speed rail as an example to the rubes.

Pastor Rick Warren was interviewed by ABC's Jake Tapper yesterday. Warren said that Mormons do not believe in the Trinity. I went to a Mormon website and here is what it said: "As Latter-day Saints we believe as all Christians do “in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost” (Articles of Faith 1).  We believe that they are one in purpose and mission and that they are three separate divine beings."

What's the reason why Warren says they do not believe in the Trinity?

Who is Joseph Kony? "Change the subject and attack!"

I think Roger Hedgecock is onto something. He has noticed how every time Obama gets in trouble, he is adept at changing the subject and attacking.

Gas prices soaring, electricity rates skyrocketing, jobless rate too high? Re-election at stake?

Time to change the subject and attack.

The new subject was contraceptives and Obama attacked the "Republican war on women".  

 Republicans were trying to deny contraceptive health coverage to women. But soon enough the public realized contraceptives are available everywhere at a nominal price. Never mind.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon".  When you're really losing a political argument, play the race card. Guaranteed to put Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on TV for at least two weeks. Take folks mind off the price of food and gas.

Almost worked too.  Until the truth about that shooting started to come out and NBC and ABC had to admit they doctored the audio and video "news".

 If the government can require you to purchase government defined health insurance, why not broccoli, why not a Chevy Volt?

Obama changed the subject and attacked the right of the Court to question the law!  

 What's Obama to do when he's run out of diversions, when his change of subjects strategy is not working, when his attacks fizzle, when the failure of his policies becomes too apparent to too many voters, and his re-election chances look dim?

Cheat.

This week, Obama announced that "Unlawful Presence Waivers" would be granted to anyone illegally in the U.S. if they can show they are a relative of a U.S. citizen. Bingo, instant amnesty. No Congress needed.

Couple that with the Department of Justice jihad against any state that would require voter identification at the polls and what do you get? Undocumented Democrats tipping the scales in November in swing states like Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Florida.

I am almost finished reading Thomas Sowell's wonderful book Dismantling America. Here are some quotes from his latest post about Obama, entitled Political Word Games. Our shameful legacy of abandoning the people of Indochina

The best figures I've seen on Cambodia come from the Yale University Cambodian Genocide Project: 1.7 million Cambodians (more than 20% of the entire population) were killed by Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge. The Texas bluebonnets are out. This is a picture of my daughter Marisa, her husband, and her three sons. Tim Tebow is going to be in her area tomorrow for an Easter service. I don't know if she plans to go, but I hope so, because Tim is a wonderful role model. My grandson at the right is quite a football player himself. The other two boys excel in basketball, track and lacrosse.
Update: I just got an email from Marisa. Tebow is speaking at her church! She is very excited, and so am I!

Baby antelope

Apparently this tiny antelope is creating quite a lot of interest on Twitter. I decided to post it, because I see antelope every day as I drive from my home on the high plains southeast of Denver to my place of employment in metro Denver. Ours have more white and less brown. They roam on the rangeland, keeping their distance from the cows.

I also pay for the sociology classes where I am sneered at for my lack of social conscience and denounced as the very essence of greed, racism and environmental insensitivity.
I exercise regularly, watch my cholesterol, and pay for my own health insurance as well as copays and deductibles. I also pay for Other People’s tonsillectomies, appendectomies and occasional rhinoplasties. I pay taxes for Medicare, Medicaid and for various medical programs for poor children and now I will get to subsidize the health care of several million more non-elderly, non-impoverished Americans.
My small business just lost its line of credit, but I paid to bail out Citigroup, AIG, and Goldman Sachs, whose executives get bonuses bigger than my entire net worth.
I pay my mortgage, but I also pay to bail out banks who made risky loans and yuppies, who have trouble paying $700,000 mortgages on their McMansions they bought with no-down payment, adjustable rate deals.
I pay for groceries for my family, but also pay millionaire farmers not grow stuff like rice. I buy dinner for more than 41 million food stamp recipients (although, they now call it Food Shares.). I also pay for school lunches. And breakfasts, since others parents apparently can’t be expected to feed their kids. I get to have red meat once a week, but I get to pay for urban hipsters to buy organic salmon at Whole Foods.
I pay my electricity and gas bills, but I also pay for other people’s air conditioning, cell phones, digital televisions, new windows, subsidized rent, and remodeling,
I pay for my daughter’s ballet lessons, but also pay for universities to develop computerized choreography programs that will help develop “interactive dance performances with real-time audience interactions.” I probably won’t be able to make the show, since I’ll be working.
I’m trying to save enough money in case I lose my job, but I pay for more than 70 different means-tested poverty programs
Because I work hard and am successful, I am in the 10% of Americans, who now pay more than 71 percent of the total federal income tax burden. The top 50 percent of earners pay 97.11 percent. In others words, the bottom half of American earners– theoretically 50 percent of the electorate – pay less than 3 percent of federal income taxes. I pay for them.
I pay property taxes, sales, excise taxes, taxes on my phone, my cable, my water; state income taxes, Social security and Medicare taxes. I also help pay the bills for the nearly half of households who no longer pay any federal income tax. I also pay the bills for the 60 to 70 percent of households who receive more from the government than they pay in.
I expect no gratitude for any of this; it has been years since the term “provider” was a matter of societal respect and personal pride. I understand that the transfer of wealth from makers to takers is seen as morally purer than the efforts of those who created wealth in the first place.
I know my role.

March: not a good month for the left

At Powerline Steven Hayward recaps the month of March.

First came the Sandra Fluke controversy. What looked like a well-staged triumph for the Left because of a rare overreach by Rush Limbaugh resulted instead in a ferocious blowback against Bill Maher, Louis C.K., and HBO, while Rush’s ratings have spiked and advertisers came groveling back after the anti-Rush boycott was revealed to have been trumped up by Media Matters. Meanwhile, while the media elites identify with Fluke as one of their own, it is less clear that ordinary Americans think the government owes free contraception to 30-year old college students.
Second, Obama is in full retreat and panic mode over gasoline prices, and energy generally….Byron York flatly predicts that Obama will be forced to approve the Keystone pipeline before the election. Obama’s embrace of the GOP slogan of “all-of-the-above” energy means that environmentalists are being largely thrown under the bus.
Then came the Trayvon Martin incident. But what looked like a by-the-numbers drill for the racial grievance industry has started to collapse beneath certain inconvenient facts that don’t fit the narrative such as Zimmerman’s ethnicity and political party registration (Democratic), eyewitness testimony that Martin was assaulting Zimmerman, and Spike Lee advocating vigilantism against Zimmerman, but tweeting an incorrect home address, endangering an innocent elderly couple.

Then of course we have the Obamacare argument in the Supreme Court this week. Even if the Court ultimately upholds the Affordable Care Act, the course of the argument is extremely damaging to the Left. And if it is struck down, I predict the Left will overreact in ways that will also backfire badly.
Finally, yesterday the House voted down Obama’s proposed budget for next year by a vote of 414 – 0. Not even the most leftist members of Obama’s own party are willing to go on record in support of his unserious and irresponsible budget. Political stunt by the GOP? Sure, but so what?

None of this should be taken as a sign of a decisive “turning point,” or that our side has won, or even that we’re winning…But it’s been a lousy last month for the Left.

Handedness

A doctor recently wrote an article on left-handedness in the New York Times. He points out that about ten percent of us are left-handed. Four of our recent presidents are left-handed: the elder Bush, Clinton, Ford, and Obama. My favorite author on the subject of the brain, Jill Bolte Taylor, writes in her book My Stroke of Insight that virtually everyone who is right-handed is left hemisphere dominant. At the same time, that is also true for about 60 percent of people who are left-handed.

Are "human friendly" pesticides killing the bees?

"The pesticides most widely used now are among a class of nicotine-based chemicals called neonicotinoids that are designed to become an intrinsic part of the plant. They were developed in large part because they are much less toxic to humans and other mammals than previous pesticides. But in high doses, they are a neurotoxin to insects. The EPA approved the pesticides in 2003. Beekeepers are now asking the EPA to ban them.  They fear it is contributing to a worldwide die-off and the inexplicable phenomenon known as "colony collapse disorder" that is devastating honeybee hives.

 The beekeepers and others say they filed the emergency petition because they fear that the EPA's review process will deliver a verdict too late for the nation's honeybees and the farmers who rely on them.

"Seventy percent of crops -- apples, oranges, zucchini, melons, strawberries -- they all need pollinators," said Vera Krischik, an associate professor of entomology at the University of Minnesota who studies the pesticides and bees. "It's a huge issue." ... Then there are the unknown numbers of bumblebees, wasps, butterflies and other wild pollinating insects that fill the same role across the natural world."

Once again today Obama was attempting to guilt the Justices of the United States Supreme Court. You don't suppose Elena or Ruth or Sonia told him about the vote taken in secret last week on ObamaCare? Nah, that wouldn't happen. 

Should you reduce sugar and fructose in your diet?

Is your lifestyle killing you? It is, if you are addicted to foods in which sugar or high fructose corn sugar are added. Sugar increases a particularly bad LDL that clogs arteries and causes heart attacks. Insulin receptors on tumors are used to grow cancer tumors by hijacking the flow of glucose. Lewis Cantley: Absolutely.
Cantley, a Harvard professor and the head of the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center, says when we eat or drink sugar, it causes a sudden spike in the hormone insulin, which can serve as a catalyst to fuel certain types of cancers.
Lewis Cantley: What we're beginning to learn is that insulin can cause adverse effects in the various tissues. And of particular concern is cancer.
Why? Nearly a third of some common cancers -- including breast and colon cancers -- have something called insulin receptors on their surface. Insulin binds to these receptors and signals the tumor to start consuming glucose.
Lewis Cantley: This is your body...
Every cell in our body needs glucose to survive. But the trouble is, these cancer cells also use it to grow.
Lewis Cantley: So if you happen to have the tumor that has insulin receptors on it then it will get stimulated to take up the glucose that's in the bloodstream rather than go into fat or muscle, the glucose goes into the tumor. And the tumor uses it to grow.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: So you've just seen that tumor turn blue which is essentially reflective of glucose going into it.
Lewis Cantley: That's right.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: So these cancers, much in the same way that muscle will say, "Hey, I'd like some of that glucose, the fat says, "I would like some of that glucose," the cancers have learned how to do this themselves as well?
Lewis Cantley: Yes. So they have evolved the ability to hijack that flow of glucose that's going by in the bloodstream into the tumor itself.

Despicable media distortion

In one of the most despicable examples of media distortion in recent memory, NBC has been caught with their pants down on the Trayvon Martin case. When Zimmerman makes a 911 call, it goes like this:
Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about."
Dispatcher: "OK, and this guy -- is he black, white or Hispanic?"
Zimmerman: "He looks black."

That was edited for play on the Today Show in this manner: "This guy looks like he's up to no good ... he looks black," 

According to the Washington Post, NBC has begun an internal investigation.

Yesterday I saw the Monster Energy Drink rep refilling the display. I told him I had noticed that the green one far outsells all the other colors. He immediately replied that it was for two reasons. "It is because of the large green M against the black background, and also because that is the one the company tends to use in advertisements." Once again the American public is successfully influenced by people in the advertising industry. We don't need an April Fools Day. We are being fooled 365 days each year!
