Yesterday in the supermarket I saw a mom with a toddler. Mom was paying the cashier. Toddler was climbing out of the shopping cart. Instead of fastening the toddler in with the cart belt, the mom conversed with the toddler as if the toddler were an adult, asking him questions like, "Do you want to hurt yourself?"
I didn't find it amusing. To me it was like the toddler was testing the mom. He would raise his leg over the cart, then look at her to see how she was going to react. Each time he would go a little further over the edge. Fortunately, the cashier gave her the change and receipt before the toddler could end this interaction in disaster.
Here is another reason to keep your child fastened in the cart belt:
