Newt would be more "aggressive" in fighting the drug war

Classical Values is a blog written by a Republican who wishes marijuana were legal. The blogger there laments the fact that Newt Gingrich has risen to the top of the Republican presidential candidates, because Newt is for ramping up the war on drugs.

I think it is very sad that so many Americans are hooked on legal cigarettes and alcohol. Is it really in America's best interest to add more substances on which Americans can become legally dependent?

I have mixed emotions about the "War On Drugs" and frankly, I haven't quite made up my mind. Now, we have laws that allow the enforcers to confiscate property of drug dealers. Sounds fair, doesn't it? But there is always unintended consequences. Now, high profile busts are delayed until after the sale is made in order to collect the cash. The drugs still end up on the street. The police maximize the revenue rather than stem the tide, which was the intent. Let's not even go into the corrupt departments - where quotas are kept and people have drugs planted on them in order to confiscate their high value properties. Clearly the current policy is failing. I'm just against throwing my hands in the air and saying "To heck with it, let it be legal" because that is a failure as well, as far as I am concerned.

But all that "funding" is now "necessary" for law enforcement. As in any bureaucracy, just try to stop it now.

Jeffro,
I agree and share your mixed emotions. Do we really think the law enforcement bureaucracy will get smaller with legalization of Marijuana?

Smaller? Hah! Not a chance.
