In this "How do we fix it?" podcast, Jonathan Haidt is interviewed. Are colleges training students to think like anxious, depressed people?
How do kids build up their immune systems to fight against anxiety and depression? They need thousands of episodes of falling down and picking themselves back up!
Since some time in the 1990s, we have been overprotecting our kids. And, we started telling kids, "Don't talk to strangers!" We have stopped our kids from being exposed to risk and conflict!
Colleges have come up with bureaucratic solutions to problems, but the solutions often cause more problems! "The bureaucracy of "safetyism!" "Don't solve it yourself, go get an adult!" Safetyism teaches kids that they are fragile, you can't succeed, the world is out to get you.
Equal outcomes: if not, then there must be racism or sexism!
Students use a rhetorical trick: if you are saying something I don't agree with, you are being violent!
This crap is spreading rapidly into the business world.
He is talking about young people born after 1995.
