Civilization depends on the apology. When humans interact and something goes wrong, the apology builds a bridge that enables us to move forward.

But apologies are failing more often. Two reasons: First, organizations aren’t humans, and organizations often seek to avoid or industrialize the human work that civilization needs. And secondly, the apology is a complex organism, one with many structures and purposes, and our culture models (or fails to model) how it’s supposed to be done.

Consider that we can say, “I’m sorry” at a funeral even if we didn’t murder the deceased, but we also say, “I’m sorry” when we bump into someone in a crowded train station and “I’m sorry” when we get caught shoplifting. Three different situations, with fundamentally different amounts of complicity, blame or guilt.

When someone accidentally bumps into us, we don’t expect compensation or punishment, but we very much want to be acknowledged. On the other hand, acknowledgment is insufficient when someone sought to profit from our pain.

We can start by asking, “what is this apology for?” What does the person need from us?

To be seen
Compensation
Punishment for the transgressor
Stopping the damage
The first category is the one that most demands humanity, and it’s also the most common. A form letter from a company does not make us feel seen. Neither does an automated text from an airline when a plane is late. One reason that malpractice victims sue is that surgeons sometimes have trouble with a genuine apology. This non-human behavior is getting worse and is being celebrated in parts of our culture (mistaking it for strength), which leads to a demand for the other three.

Compensation is the ancient tradition of seeking to make a victim whole. Unless the injury is solely financial, financial compensation is insufficient, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t tried to build systems that use money to atone for ills.

Punishment is different from compensation. Punishment allows the victim to feel seen, because he or she is now aware that the transgressor feels some pain as well. (Punishment is unsatisfying to the victim if he or she is unaware of it). Punishment is economically suspect, though, because other than the second-order feeling of being seen, the punishment doesn’t directly help the person who was injured. It also can spiral forward, leading to ever more damage.

And finally, stopping the damage, which often co-exists with the other three needs. This is the affirmative act of making sure it doesn’t happen again. This is correcting the website so that the next person who reads it won’t see the same error. This is fixing the railing so the next visitor won’t trip and fall. This is the organization investing time and energy to actually improve its systems.

Compounding these totally different sorts of apologies is the very industrial idea of winning. Victims have been sold that it’s not enough that your compensation is merely helpful, but it has to be the most. That you won the biggest judgment in history. That the transgressor isn’t simply going to jail, but is going to jail forever, far away, in solitary confinement. We’ve all ended up in a place where one of the ways to feel seen is to also feel like you came in first place compared to others.

There’s an old cartoon–an irate customer is standing at the complaints desk of a store, clearly not mollified by the clerk. She then asks, exasperated, “well, what if we shut down the store, burn it to the ground and run the owner out of town… will that be enough?”

The challenge that organizations have is that they haven’t trained, rewarded or permitted their frontline employees to exert emotional labor to create human connection when it’s most needed.

The traveler goes straight from, “my flight is overbooked,” to “I want a million frequent flyer miles and a first class ticket on the next flight.”

The patient goes from, “the scar on my leg isn’t healing,” to “I’m going to sue you.”

And the most common unseen situation is the customer who walks away, forever, because you have a broken system and you’re not hearing from your people about how to fix it.

Organizations that refuse to see the pain they’re causing because they’re afraid of being held responsible have missed the point. You’re already being held responsible. The question is what to do about it? You can stonewall, bureaucratize and delay, and hope that the system will suffice…

The alternative is to choose to contribute to connection by actually apologizing. Apologizing not to make the person go away, but because they have feelings, and you can do something for them. Apologizing with time and direct contact, and following it up by actually changing the defective systems that caused the problem.

“Yikes, I’m sorry you missed your flight–I really wish that hadn’t happened. The next flight is in an hour, but that’s probably going to ruin your entire trip. Are you headed on vacation?”

“You’re right, you booked a front-facing seat, but you got one that’s facing backward–and I hear you about getting motion sickness, my sister does too… I know that Amtrak has been having trouble with our systems, but I have the hotline number of the head of ops–I’m going to call and let them know.”

“Yeah, I shouldn’t have written that review. I was in a bad mood when I wrote it. I apologize. But, to set the record straight, I’m going to delete that review and write a new one, just as loud, but this time telling people about how much you care.”

Consider that an effective apology has a few elements to it:
1. You know what sort of apology you’re offering.
2. You share your story with the aggrieved as well as hearing their story, thus becoming human, and then taking the time to help them feel seen by you.
3. You engage with the person who was harmed and find out, beyond being seen, what would help them move forward, noting that it’s impossible to make complete amends.

[It’s worth noting that these are not the same steps you’d take if you’re simply hoping the person will shut up and go away, without you seeing them. That’s not going to happen, and acting as if it will, will only make your problem worse.]

The American Taliban

John Walker Lindh is being released from prison today. What do you know about him? Here are some excerpts of what Mark Steyn wrote about him December 9, 2001.

A fortnight ago, two Americans met in the northern Afghan desert, at the Qala-I-Jangi prison. One was a CIA special-ops man, Mike Spann. The other was a prisoner he was interrogating, a Taleban soldier called "Abdul Hamid", the nom de guerre of John Walker, formerly of northern California. Mr Spann will be buried tomorrow by his wife and three young children in Arlington National Cemetery. He was kicked, beaten and apparently bitten to death in an uprising of captured Taleban, who then booby-trapped his body with grenades. Mr Walker, by contrast, is one of 86 people to survive the four-day prison battle, and the question now is what to do with him.

If nothing else, he's usefully nailed one of the self-serving myths peddled after the awesome intelligence failure of September 11th: awf'lly sorry we failed to see it coming, said the high-ranking suits, but it's impossible to do any covert deep-cover stuff out in Afghanistan; these fellows are all cousins and brothers-in-law - a guy from Jersey would stick out like a lap-dancer in a burqa.

As we now know, instead of being full of fearsome Pashtun warriors whose ferocious lineage rings down the centuries, the Omar/Osama ranks were like a novelty Gap ad, "Losers of Many Nations" – misfit Saudis and Pakis, Limeys and LaLaLanders. Anyone can walk in off the street and be assistant supervisor of the third-floor latrine in Tora Bora by nightfall. The only distinguishing feature about John Walker is that he's such an obvious compendium of clapped-out clichés from America's Left Coast the wonder is the mullahs didn't automatically take him for a CIA plant.

But no, Mr Walker is for real - born John Lindh in 1981, and from that bastion of well-heeled pothead progressivism, California's affluent Marin County. Just north of San Francisco, Marin is the kind of place where Taleban are rare and Republicans are rarer, and your average hippie-turned-lawyer can stay true to his Sixties values while living on property that stays true to its late Nineties values (average house price: just shy of a million bucks). This is the aging of the dawn of Aquarius: a lotta latte, a little dope, environmentalism, multiculturalism, and everyone likes feeling religious, or at least "spiritual" - old New York Times headline: "Religion Makes A Comeback (Belief To Follow)". Following the traditional Marin pattern, his parents divorced, his father moved in with another man, his mother converted to Buddhism, and the children were taught Native American spirituality. John was sent to an "alternative" high school. (In the Bay Area, all the high schools are "alternative". The problem for parents is trying to find any alternative to the alternative.) The set texts included The Autobiography Of Malcom X, and John liked it so much that like the late Mr X he too decided to embrace Islam and change his name, to Sulayman. His parents, putting their foot down for what seems to be the first and last time, demanded the right to continue calling him John. They had, after all, gone to the trouble of naming him after one of the colossi of the age, John Lennon. To this, he consented. In return, they let him study at the Mill Valley Islamic Center.

...John Walker is a 20-year old man – though one can sympathise if protracted exposure to the Bay Area's "critical thinking" (if only) has left him in a state of arrested development. For four decades, supposedly "non-judgmental" flower-children like Marilyn Walker have reflexively characterised CIA men like Mike Spann as the dark agents of right-wing militarism. We are entitled to judge Marilyn's son, the comrade of Spann's killers, as the dark agent of left-wing Marinism. Raised by peaceniks and Marinated in "tolerance", he took up an AK47 in defence of misogynists and gay-bashers: not an internal contradiction, but the logical reductio of the new left's moral nullity. Cocooned in one of the most prosperous enclaves on the planet, he was taught everything – from Buddhism to Indian spirituality to Malcolm X – everything except what it means to be an American citizen.

I'm not in favour of trying him for treason: Alan Dershowitz and the other high-rent lawyers are already salivating over the possibility of a two-year circus with attendant book deals and TV movies. But there is another way, suggested the other day by The Toronto Sun's Peter Worthington. In 1944, lacking the benefits of an immersion in Bay Area "critical thinking", the teenage Worthington volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy. Unlike Walker's apologists, he at least treats him as an adult exercising free will. As Mr Worthington notes, on page four of John Walker's US passport, it states that any American who enlists in a foreign army can be stripped of his citizenship. Mr Walker wants to be Abdul Hamid; Mr Bush should honour his wishes. Let us leave him to the Northern Alliance and let his fancypants 'Frisco lawyers petition to appear before the Kabul bar, if there is one. It would, surely, be grossly discriminatory to subject Mr Hamid to non-Islamic justice.

In American Greatness, Victor Davis Hanson writes,

Mueller’s failure to find collusion prompts an important question. If the Steele dossier—the basis for unfounded charges that Trump colluded with Russia—was fraudulent, then how and why did the Clinton campaign, hand in glove with top Obama administration officials, use such silly trash and smears to unleash the powers of government against Trump’s campaign, transition team and early presidency?

...There may well have occurred a near coup attempt by high-ranking officials to destroy a campaign and then to remove an elected president. Likewise, top officials may have engaged in serial lying to federal investigators, perjury, the misleading of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the illegal insertion of informants into a political campaign, the leaking of classified documents and the obstruction of justice.

So, how can we tell that the former accusers are now terrified of becoming the accused? Because suddenly the usual band of former Obama officials and Trump accusers have largely given up on their allegations that Trump was or is a Russian asset.

Instead, John Brennan, James Clapper, James Comey, Andrew McCabe and Rod Rosenstein are now beginning to accuse each other of wrongdoing.

...Comey, the former FBI director, has hit the lecture and television circuit with his now-tired moralistic shtick that he alone had a “soul” while others allowed theirs to be eaten away by Trump. Translated, that means Comey is terrified that former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whom Comey attacked as a Trump enabler, knows that Comey himself may have broken the law—and may direct prosecutors on how to prove it.

Comey is also in a tiff with his former deputy, Andrew McCabe. Both know that the FBI under Comey illegally leaked classified information to the media. But Comey says McCabe went rogue and did it. Of course, McCabe’s attorney shot back that Comey had authorized it. Comey also claims the Steele dossier was not the chief evidence for a FISA warrant. McCabe insists that it was. It’s possible that one might work with prosecutors against the other to finagle a lesser charge.

Former CIA Director John Brennan has on two occasions lied under oath to Congress and gotten away with it. He may not get away with lying again if it’s determined that he distorted the truth about his efforts to spread the Steele dossier smears. A former CIA official claims that Comey put the unverified Steele dossier into an intelligence community report on alleged Russian interference. Comey has contended that Brennan was the one who did.

It’s possible that both did. Doing so would have been unethical if not illegal, given that neither official told President Obama (if he didn’t already know) that the silly Steele dossier was a product of Hillary Clinton’s amateurish efforts to subvert the 2016 Trump campaign.

In sum, the old leaky vessel of collusion is sinking.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Trying to get to the bottom of how and why President Trump was elected, House Democrats issued a subpoena to the Almighty God to force Him to testify in Congress Wednesday.

While House leadership was quick to clarify that they don't believe in the God of the Bible per se, they said they had to explore "all possible avenues" in their exhaustive search for an answer as to why Trump was put in the White House.

"We're not sure if God is out there or if there's some great positive spiritual energy holding up the cosmos," said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. "But whoever he or she or xe is, we will interrogate them. We will not allow God to get off the hook for His collusion in bending all of human history to His irresistible will."

After the Lord, who sits in the heavens and does all He pleases, did not show up at their hearing, Democrats were seen eating KFC to mock Him for being "a chicken" and issued a stern warning.

"These subpoenas are not optional," said Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler. "When the Congress of the United States commands you to appear, you appear. I don't care if you are the Lord of all creation. Trump is in the White House, and we will get answers."

Attachment, memory, and reverence

In the Front Porch Republic, Paul Krause writes in part,

...Both consumerism and progressivism are anti-historical, and this has aesthetic and cultural consequences. This antipathy to history results in more than just aesthetic iconoclasm; it is a force of anti-culture in the desecration of attachment, place, and memory. The past, those stories of attachment, memory, and reverence, are the bowls of superstition, sin, and sacrilege to progressive fancy. The past, place, and all the stories attached to past and place, must be erased for the utopia to come. Without the front porch to call home there can be no culture, no root of love, and no fireplace which beckons us to hear stories and cultivate memories.

To have a home is to have a table to feast, laugh, and find joy. “You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat.” The man of culture is glad to “sit and eat.”

From the Babylon Bee: BOULDER, CO—Well, fellow social justice warriors, we regret to report that the patriarchy has claimed another victim: meet Seth Ryder, a 4-year-old boy who is already reinforcing toxic traditional gender roles by choosing to play with a train set rather than his sister’s Barbie collection.

Although his sister’s Barbie dolls were lying on the floor just waiting to be played with, Ryder walked right by them and began playing with the “choo-choos,” obviously having been negatively influenced by years of institutionalized gender bias and patriarchy. His horrified parents tried everything to get him to play with the Barbies: they coaxed him, bribed him, and even spoke positive words of affirmation to him.

But it was too late, and the patriarchy had already taken hold: the young boy declared he liked big trains that go “VROOM! VROOM!” and not “yucky” Barbie dolls that don’t even have a steam engine.

“It’s too late for him,” his mother said, tears welling up in her eyes. “We tried so hard to get him gender-neutral toys, clothes, diapers, pacifiers, and food. But the patriarchy is everywhere.”

“It’s so hard to see the little boy you worked so hard to immerse in your far-left progressive worldview turn out this way. I can’t bear it,” she continued.

Wow. The next time you decide to have harmful gendered toys in your house, think about what happened to little Seth, and try to do better.

We should have read his book!

Jerome R. Corsi, Ph.D. wrote a book in 2008 before that year's Democratic Convention. It was entitled Obama Nation. In the preface, Dr. Corsi warned us that "Obama's leftist policies, driven by the cult of personality he intentionally manufactured, would be an abomination in that the result of those policies would be to lead the United States in a costly and self-destructive direction, both at home and abroad. After an Obama presidency, we would be a militarily weakened and economically diminished nation. Instead of being more united, our internal conflicts could well become more sharpened and more abrasive from four years of Obama's leadership."

Jenna Ellis Rives was bumped off Facebook for quoting Matt Walsh, who made fun of the left's pro-abortion argument, which Facebook called hate speech. Of course, it is hate speech to the liberals of Facebook, because Matt exposes the fantasy they are creating.

In his reply to a mailbag emailer, Andrew brings up the three "A's" that justify divorce: adultery, addiction, and abuse. He advises the email writer not to marry her boyfriend who is addicted to pot and video games.

Andrew has a problem with many of the happy "Christian" movies. The artist can't change reality in the name of his faith! They are telling us something as fact that we only know in faith!

Is Christianity on the ropes? It has happened before and it has always come back, because it describes reality. However, we should not allow ourselves to be maneuvered into expressing Christianity as what we don't like (gays, out of wedlock marriage, etc). God expressed Himself in a Body. Christianity is about love and forgiveness. We transform the world in that love and forgiveness because it is the love and forgiveness that God shows to us!

Relativism, postmodernism, the ideas opposed to Christianity are actually falling apart. They don't make sense. Only reality holds together. The Christian approach to life holds together!

Andrew gives wonderful advice to his emailers. He tells one man who is undergoing the terrible pain of losing someone he loved to experience the pain and then move on. Don't have a romance with the pain. Let it all go!

A new "Long March"

In a clear signal toward the trade conflict with the United States, Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping is preparing his nation for a protracted trade conflict. Chinese state-run media have been deploying propaganda to shift public opinion toward the U.S. as a direct threat, and the latest developments by Xi showcase that agenda.



(South China Post) Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the nation to embark on a new Long March and “start all over again”, in the most dramatic sign to date that Beijing has given up hope of reaching a trade deal with the United States in the near term.

Xi is in Jiangxi province for his first domestic tour since the escalation of the trade war two weeks ago. Jiangxi is where China’s defeated Red Army started its fabled Long March in 1934, and Xi’s choice of destination is being viewed as an effort to invoke a spirit of endurance and to rally public spirit amid rising tensions with Washington.

“We are here at the starting point of the Long March to remember the time when the Red Army began its journey,” Xi told cheering crowds on Monday, in footage posted on state broadcaster CCTV’s website on Tuesday. “We are now embarking on a new Long March, and we must start all over again.”

While Xi did not directly mention the trade war or the United States, his remarks are being perceived as clear signals that the Chinese public is being told to prepare for hardships because of the worsening external environment.

The confrontation between China’s communist controlled economy and the U.S. free market system is the most significant geopolitical event since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The consequences from this reset are far reaching, and extend beyond the tens of trillions of dollars within the combined economies.

The entire system of global trade and supply-chain economics has entered a state of flux.

Within this dynamic there are opportunities for national economies to benefit if they position themselves within a nationalistic free-trade alliance being assembled by President Trump, Secretary Mnuchin, Secretary Ross and USTR Lighthizer. However, to benefit the political leaders of those nations will have to adjust their outlook.

There are indications within recent political shifts, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Brazil, and Australia as examples, that inherently many nations are aware how global multinational systems -and political leadership- were/are aligned to benefit an elitist few at the expense of the larger population. The visible signs of populist backlash are extensive.

President Trump vents after meeting with Schumer and Pelosi. One of the things he mentions is Pen Registers. A commenter at the Conservative Treehouse explains,

A Pen Register is….the last step in the process of getting a Title 3 Warrant to “TAP” a phone line. It is only used to get that phone tap warrant and nothing else. So, without saying…Mueller told us that he “TAPPED” 500 PHONE NUMBERS in real time belonging to President Trump, his family and his associates. Mueller did not want us to know that!

Doesn't Mitch know that 18-year-olds can vote?

In the Ace of Spades blog, Oregon Muse expresses his disagreement with the Senate Majority leader.

Mitch McConnell has just introduced a bill which would increase the minimum age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21 years. When I first heard about this, I smacked myself in the forehead so hard, the slope disappeared. I mean, is federal intervention is such matters really necessary? That's quite a silly display of nanny-statism. Apparently, the several states aren't competent enough to handle these things for themselves but require the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-benevolent FedGov to make these decisions for them. Sounding like quite the alarmist, Cocaine Mitch said, quote, the health of our children is literally at stake, unquote. The panic implied in this statement rivals AOC's claim that "the world is going to end in 12 years" if we don't immediately mandate buttplugs for cows and outlaw economic prosperity. Never mind the fact that 18-year-olds are scarcely children. Never mind the fact that these same 18-year-olds are eligible for military service, so even though they can be shipped off to foreign soil and die in combat, they can't buy their own cigarettes.

Soon, liquor stores all across America will be festooned with crowds of 18-21-year-old "children" asking adults to buy cigarettes for them. But bigger than any of that, though, does anybody really want this? Does anyone recall hearing any calls for legislation about this from normal Americans? I thought the purpose of the federal government was to maintain post roads and collect tariffs from surly foreigners, not to post inspectors in every lavoratory to make sure you wiped your butt good enough. C'mon, Mitch, it's time to focus on what's really important: confirming more of Presidents Trump judicial picks so that perhaps there will be a chance that this country can be restored to some semblance of sanity, and also doing whatever it takes to insure that our borders are not overrun by surly foreigners who don't want to pay tariffs. Let the states make their own laws about tobacco usage, and the federal government can just butt the hell out. After all, the 10th Amendment shouldn't be that hard to understand."

Ann Coulter counters media myths about our border crisis

In the Hill, Ann Coulter tells us about four myths the media and politicians tell you about our border crisis.

Media Myth #1: Illegal immigration at an all-time low! ...According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), illegals have been pouring across our border at rates not seen for more than a decade: 76,000-plus in February, 100,000-plus in March, 100,000-plus in April, 100,000 and climbing so far in May.

In fiscal 2016 — the 12 months before Trump won the presidency — an average of 46,000 illegals crossed the border each month. Today we’re taking in twice that many.

And those are just the number of “undocumented immigrants” we caught. How many are actually getting in is some multiple of the illegal aliens the Border Patrol stops.

Media Myth #2: Illegal immigrants at our border are LEGAL — because they’re asking for asylum. ...An illegal alien seeking asylum is still “an illegal alien.” It’s against the law to enter the country without our approval. See 8 U.S.C. 1325. Asylum is simply a defense to deportation.

We could also eliminate crime by calling convicted felons “LEGAL reversal-seekers.” Yes, a convict has a right to appeal his conviction but, until it’s reversed, he is “a convicted criminal.”

Media Myth #3: Only 39 percent of illegals released at the border fail to appear at their hearings! First, that still would be a lot. Second, it isn’t true. And third, it’s irrelevant: Once they’re released from custody — and they’re all released — illegal aliens are never going home.

The truth is, they want illegals released from custody because then they’ll never leave. As Latin America’s poor discover this, more and more will come.

In addition to idiotic court rulings requiring that illegals be released after 20 days if they drag a kid with them, Congress has ensured their release by mandating that ICE have no more than 45,274 detention beds. That’s 45,274 beds for all ICE detainees — including MS-13 gang members, cop-killing illegal aliens, terrorist aliens and so on.

Did you know that the Clinton Foundation has failed to disclose over 1000 donors? I learned that from reading a thread by Roscoe B. Davis. The thread is about lies told by James Comey regarding the FBI's efforts to get Apple to comply in the San Bernadino terrorist's iphone case.
