What can you learn from watching 9 million ant-to-ant interactions?

Humans are not the only ones who change jobs as they age. Ants start out nursing the young baby ants, then move on to cleaning the nest, then on to foraging as they get older. How do we know? Researchers in Switzerland put bar codes on the ants, and also color-coded them each week as they aged.
