Personal autonomy, personal responsibility vs. "God has willed it"

Personal autonomy, personal responsibility. These are hallmarks of our culture. Not so in Egypt, writes Andrew Doran in National Review Online. There it is more likely to be "God has willed it." People believe that each action is prompted by divine will, that human will exists in no meaningful way.

Doran writes about The Sisters of Maadi, nuns who treat and care for approximately 200,000 impoverished Egyptians annually, 90% of whom are Muslim. The nuns also run a preschool.

When the country erupted in protests of Mubarek, the police withdrew. Muslims stood guard through the nights to protect monasteries, churches, and convents. Why? Because the Christians are doing good, and are loved by the people of Egypt.

I would like to see much more written about personal autonomy and personal responsibility, and how these concepts inform our Christian faith and our country.
