Barr announces sweeping new sanctions, 'significant escalation' against left-wing sanctuary cities
This blog is looking for wisdom, to have and to share. It is also looking for other rare character traits like good humor, courage, and honor. It is not an easy road, because all of us fall short. But God is love, forgiveness and grace. Those who believe in Him and repent of their sins have the promise of His Holy Spirit to guide us and show us the Way.

Sanctuary cities: "We don't really mean it!"
Well, this is interesting. Trump threatens to place amnesty-seekers in sanctuary cities while awaiting hearings, and voila, the anti-Trump 9th Circuit rules in favor of Trump's original orders to force them to stay in Mexico until their cases are decided in American courts!

Threat to public safety
Jake Gibson and Alex Pappas report at Fox News,
The Justice Department on Wednesday threatened to subpoena 23 jurisdictions if they don’t turn over information about their "sanctuary" policies -- triggering a backlash from mayors across the country who pulled out of a White House meeting.Read more here.
In letters to New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and other jurisdictions, the Justice Department demanded records relating to whether these localities are "unlawfully restricting information sharing by law enforcement officers with federal immigration authorities."
“I continue to urge all jurisdictions under review to reconsider policies that place the safety of their communities and their residents at risk,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “Protecting criminal aliens from federal immigration authorities defies common sense and undermines the rule of law.”
“We have seen too many examples of the threat to public safety represented by jurisdictions that actively thwart the federal government’s immigration enforcement—enough is enough,” Sessions said.
If these jurisdictions can't prove they are complying with federal law, senior DOJ officials told Fox News, federal funding could be withheld and the DOJ may demand the return of 2016 federal funding some of the cities have already received.
“We’ve given them federal dollars – your taxpayer dollars – to cooperate with federal law enforcement,” Sarah Isgur Flores, a spokeswoman for the DOJ, said Wednesday on "Fox & Friends." “They didn’t have to take that money, but they did. And when they took it, they said they would comply with federal law. So what we’re saying is if we find out you’re not complying with federal law, we’re taking the tax dollars back.”

How sanctuary cities refuse to protect their citizens
Have you been reading about the man in Oregon who has been deported 13 times, but returned to commit a brutal sexual assault on a woman in Portland last week? Will Racke has details at The Daily Caller here.
Jesse Watters also did a good job of covering the story on Watters' World Saturday evening.

"Kill, Rape, Control"
Edwin Mora writes at Breitbart about how sanctuary cities block ICE from deporting members of the MS13 gang back to El Salvador after they commit violent crimes in the US.
Currently, there are “more than” 10,000 MS-13 gang members — accused of extortion, murder, and rape, among other crimes — operating in “at least” 46 states and the nation’s capital, according to the federal government.Read more here.
“The MS-13 threat is everywhere in the U.S.,” warned Kenneth Blanco, the acting assistant attorney general at the Department of Justice (DOJ), while testifying alongside Albence.
Asked by Sen. Kennedy, “I want to make sure I understand. These are evil people…If they’re arrested and they’re in a local jail, there are some cities in the United States that would prevent you from coming in and talking to them, interviewing them?”
“Correct,” responded ICE’s Albence.
The gang’s motto is known as “kill, rape, control.”
MS-13, primarily based in El Salvador, has taken advantage of the flow of illegal immigrants in the last few years, particularly unaccompanied alien children (UACs), to bolster their ranks within the United States.
UACs refer to illegal aliens under the age of 18.

Texas takes the lead in dealing with officials in "sanctuary cities."
Jazz Shaw writes at Hot Air,
The 9th Circuit may be trying to gum up the gears for President Trump (at least until the matter reaches the Supreme Court), but the states still have their own cards to play if they choose to do so.Read more here.
...While many other states, particularly California, are seeking out new ways to “fight Trump” and defy the enforcement of immigration law, Texas is taking a decidedly different approach. Out in the Lone Star State, Republicans are moving forward with a bill which would essentially ban sanctuary cities and impose some stiff penalties for those not in compliance. This is in keeping with statements that Governor Abbott has made in the past, so if it makes it to his desk it will likely go through. Part of it is the usual route of cutting off state funding and grants, but this one takes the additional step of holding leaders, including police chiefs and sheriffs, accountable. And that could mean fines or even jail time. (Associated Press)

Sanctuary cities, and The Russians are Coming!
Here is Tucker Carlson's show from last night. My favorite part was Tucker's interview with the mayor of Lansing, Michigan, a sanctuary city. Tucker asked him to explain how it makes a city safer when immigration laws are not enforced. The mayor's reply indicated that since Tucker is a white male, his views are less valuable, less significant on the subject.
Tucker notes that years ago the Left used to care about civil liberties, but now that they control so many of our institutions, they just want us to stop questioning their policies.

"These sheriffs could wind up behind the very bars they are releasing these criminals from.”
At Truth Revolt, Mark Tapson brings to our attention an interview Newsmax conducted with Texas governor Greg Abbott on the issue of sanctuary cities.
On Newsmax TV’s The Steve Malzberg Show Wednesday, Texas' Republican Governor Greg Abbott told host Malzberg that he will confront the issue of cities that refuse to comply with immigration law by signing legislation that could jail sheriffs of sanctuary cities.
Abbott said, “We have been pushing a piece of legislation in Texas that is going to pass that I will be signing into law that imposes even sterner penalties on counties. It will include things such as further defunding them. It will impose fines. And it could impose jail time for these sheriffs to enforce the laws. Oddly enough, these sheriffs could wind up behind the very bars they are releasing these criminals from.”
Malzberg went on to question the whole premise behind protecting illegals, which Abbot called a "bogus argument": "They're saying that they're going to promote obeying the law by promoting lawlessness. And so, it's a flawed strategy."
Abbott pointed out that that flawed strategy resulted in, for example, the murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco at the hands of an oft-deported illegal.
"This is something that Americans cannot and will not tolerate, and that is crime-by-public-policy because of neglect of enforcing the rule of law. America is a nation based upon the rule of law, and these liberals who are abandoning the rule of law are compromising the safety and the well-being of our fellow Americans, and Texas and the Trump administration are not going

It begins: the crack down on sanctuary cities
Sundance reports,
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announces the DOJ intends to crack down on municipal authorities who refuse to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers to remove illegal alien criminals.
Attorney General Sessions announced if municipal authorities at city, county and state level, refuse to comply with U.S. immigration law they will lose federal funding provided by the Department of Justice through federal grants. The DOJ will also take action to claw back any grant monies that have been provided to sanctuary cities who continue to refuse compliance.

Victor Davis Hanson saw it coming!
Victor Davis Hanson reminds us of the importance of the rule of law. "Sanctuary cities have been terrible for the American worker. It is elite versus the mass. The Democratic and La Raza elite want an unassimilated constituency that is replenished every year that ensures the demographics change, and that they can be spokesmen for group grievances rather than individual accomplishment. Employers want access to cheap labor, and then they dress it all up with utopian caring. In fact, it is one of the most amoral, uncaring phenomenon in the world! It is bad for the American poor. It destroys the rule of law. Who is to say when you start destroying the sanctity of the law that you can pick and choose which other laws people have to follow?"
If Americans do not believe they are better than the alternative, nobody else will either! For immigration to work in this country, it traditionally had to be legal! It had to be a melting pot, with assimilation, integration, and intermarriage.
To Eric Holder, the law was secondary. He politicized the Justice Department in favor of those he decided were oppressed. Obama tried to influence the Trayvon Martin jury by saying "Trayvon looks like the son I never had." The Left got everything they wanted: the House, the Senate, and a president very skilled in teleprompted rhetoric.
Can we be brave and be triumphant? Point out the hypocrisy! Obama says we have to watch out for CEOs, but he doesn't think that applies to him! Al Gore sells his failed cable news station to an anti-Semitic Middle Eastern authoritarian government that enriches him because of profits from fossil fuels, and, he does so in haste to beat capital gains tax increases!
Hanson finishes this July 2016 program by pointing out that the Republican party now is populist, and the Democrat Party is the coastal blue blood elitists! How prescient can he be?

Sanctuary cities roulette
Victor Davis Hanson writes,
There are an estimated 300 or so jurisdictions -- entire states, counties, cities, and municipalities -- that since the early 1980s have enacted “sanctuary city” laws, forbidding full enforcement of federal immigration law within their jurisdictions.Read more here.
...The liberal Migration Policy Institute conceded that there are over 800,000 illegal aliens with criminal records, nearly 700,000 of them with felony arrest records.
Those numbers, of course, reflect only those who have been arrested and faced trial, not the unknown number who have committed crimes without being apprehended or charged. In some sanctuary cities, lawlessness among undocumented immigrants has reached epidemic proportions.
Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute found that two-thirds of all outstanding felony warrants in the city of Los Angeles involved illegal aliens -- as well as 95% of outstanding murder warrants.
Sanctuary cities are on record as having released over 10,000 known criminal aliens into the general population whom Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were attempting to deport. In addition, hundreds of thousands of criminals are currently protected from deportation as they await trials and sentences. Among them, most infamously, is Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a seven-time convicted felon and five-time deported illegal alien who was not turned over to ICE by the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department that held him in custody on a drug charge. He was instead released just weeks before he murdered Kate Steinle.
The apparent principle of sanctuary cities is akin to roulette. The odds suggest that most illegal aliens detained by officials are not career felons and thus supposedly need not be turned over to ICE for deportation. On the chance that some of their 10,000 released criminals will go on to commit further crimes in the manner of Juan Lopez-Sanchez, officials then shrug that the public outcry will be episodic and quickly die down, or will at least not pose political problems as great as would come from deporting aliens.

"If you want federal money, follow federal law."
Paul Bedard reports at the Washington Examiner,
The House chairman who oversees Justice Department spending is telling so-called "sanctuary cities" that funding for police, jails and housing will end under President Trump's new executive orders tightening immigration control.
"It's real easy, their money disappears. There's no fight, their money is gone," said Texas Rep. John Culberson, chairman of the appropriations subcommittee that funds Justice.
Culberson last year forced the Obama administration to warn several sanctuary cities and jurisdictions about the funding cut off. In an interview for Sunday's Full Measure With Sharyl Attkisson, he said that Trump's new order covers all 300 of the sanctuaries.
"They are in violation of federal law because federal law requires state and local jurisdictions can't interfere in any way with sharing information about criminal illegal aliens in their custody; in any way means you must cooperate 100 percent of the time — 99 out of 100 of sharing information is not enough," he told the news magazine show.
This is very simple. If you want federal money, follow federal law."

...Nullification, neo-Confederate, tribal, and cynical are the proper epithets for such cities, which are best summed up as “cities of nihilism.”
