Thing is, there is no consistent conservative philosophy, other than adhering to traditional values and norms. Take tariffs. Our founders thought they were a useful tool, both to fund our government as well as to protect domestic industries. Many people who call themselves conservatives today claim that protectionism is not conservative.

It all depends on which values you are focusing on (and during which period of time) when you look to tradition.

But, very few people would consider blowing up random, non-combative, fellow citizens with package bombs to be a traditional value.
