Two sad sellouts?

JJ Sefton writes in part in his Morning Report,

Most disappointing of all are the words coming from people who I once had much respect for: Ann Coulter and most shockingly Tucker Carlson. For them to claim that what Trump did in taking out Soleimani is an escalation and war-mongering running counter to his claims of wanting to get out of the Middle East just boggles the mind. If anything, the President both de-escalated the situation while at the same time might very well have set in motion the final collapse of the Iranian regime, the source of much of our misery lo these past 40 years in that region and across the globe, including right here on our own soil. If that does happen, as I think it could before this year is out, he would have done so without starting a war and without sending one single soldier to die on Persian soil. That these two, especially Carlson, cannot see this just boggles the mind.

In strong defense of Tucker Carlson

Kudos to the Hill, which has added Victor Davis Hanson to its list of opinion contributors. Excerpts from his latest column there:

...No one knows exactly all the factors that trigger the unhinged to shoot the innocent. And in that void of knowledge, it makes no sense either to level charges that will lead to more violence or to damn as culpable those who have not called for violence.

...(Tucker) Carlson, over the past few months and especially the past few days, has voiced some inconvenient truths that earn outrage but not refutation:

• One, while white supremacy ideology always must be monitored and can trigger the unhinged — as the El Paso shooting may turn out to suggest — it is no longer a ubiquitous movement as it once was in the 20th century.

The days of the Klan and the American Nazi Party are mostly over. They are now fringe organizations. They and others like them are derided by the public, and uniformly condemned by conservatives. To suggest that white supremacy is some all-encompassing, 21st-century existential threat to our collective security, rather than fringe extremism to be carefully monitored, is simply untrue.

• Two, Carlson emphasized that in comparison to America’s real existential challenges — homelessness, drug epidemics, the threat of Chinese mercantilism, keeping a vibrant economy going — white supremacy simply does not register with the general public as a major threat. Certainly, in terms of annual fatal shootings, the staggering death tolls in Chicago and Baltimore suggest a national crisis that is ignored for largely political reasons.

Nonwhite immigrants still sense that reality when they risk their lives to immigrate to a white-majority America. The public knows that the media’s reporting of near-daily anti-Semitic bias is far more likely to emanate from the so-called squad in the House or an unhinged speech of Louis Farrakhan than from the old suspects of the past in bed sheets and swastika armbands. Yet, left-wing anti-Semites are still welcomed or at least tolerated by many in the progressive movement.

• Three, Carlson argued that the United States, while not perfect, is a good nation of good people who daily go about their business judging others by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. Its Constitution and popular ethos have always been self-critical, and saw moral and ethical improvement as inevitable as the nation’s stunning technological and material advances. Compared to the alternatives abroad, a multiracial and multiethnic America works and constantly seeks to improve. And Carlson often points out that widening class differences have superseded race as the more worrisome divides in American society.

• Four, and most controversially, Carlson repeatedly has cited political opportunism as the fuel that powers these untruths. He has been unapologetic that those who falsely charge that white supremacy defines America, past and present, have clear agendas. Without such venomous charges, they cannot win popular support: “They promise some Americans reparations, they denounce others for their skin color. They call it ‘privilege.’ The entire country, they’ll tell you, is fundamentally racist and therefore, evil.”

The charge of “white supremacy” has now become the natural heir to the failed narratives of the past three years that Trump should be removed under the 25th Amendment, or that Robert Mueller would find him indictable on charges of collusion and obstruction, or that he is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and, thus, impeachable. All reflect a lack of progressive confidence that they can vote Trump out of office in the next election, and instead seek to use extraordinary means to abort his presidency.

• Fifth, and finally, Carlson has emphasized that the outrage machine is asymmetrical and there is no disinterested standard by which to adjudicate extremist speech and conduct.

Americans are confused over which standards suddenly are applied to whom. Do the racialist past smears of former Vice President Joe Biden or former Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) illustrate widespread hate speech? What did then-candidate Barack Obama mean when he talked of a “typical white person,” or former attorney general Eric Holder infer when he referred to “my people”? When Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) compares Israelis residing on the West Bank to “termites,” or Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) cites Jewish money and Israeli politicians as running U.S. foreign policy, are there commensurate condemnations?

Why is Carlson then targeted and especially singled out among conservative commentators?

His show enjoys spectacular ratings. Once signature anchorman Bill O’Reilly left Fox, few imagined that Carlson or anyone else could resurrect O’Reilly’s time-slot audience. Carlson did. And it bothers the left that his MSNBC and CNN competitors do not resonate with the public to the same degree. That he brings in guests with opposite opinions and debates them is not seen in progressive circles as anything to be emulated — especially when leftist guests are not shy in expressing often extreme views.

Second, Tucker is an idiosyncratic, not an orthodox, conservative. He has voiced concern over the role of the Koch brothers and support for the use of tariffs to force China to trade reciprocally and fairly. The Never Trump movement especially dislikes Carlson’s views.

Lots of other Republicans do not appreciate his criticism of optional military engagements or the ubiquitous role of the U.S. military abroad. Often, his on-air conservative guests are as critical and as criticized as liberal ones.

Nor is his support for much of Trump’s populist economic agenda consistent with doctrinaire free-market economics. And the net result is that Carlson’s leftist opponents rightly believe he is not always supported by conservatives and thus can be isolated as a heretic and outlander.

Passions certainly are cresting, but the hatred is still not really proportional.

Conservatives are not swarming the homes of liberal anchors or congressional leaders.

Republicans in the House are not tweeting out the names and employers of those who donate to Biden or Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.). Conservatives are not organizing boycotts of companies whose board members support Warren.

Hollywood is not releasing new movies that portray conservatives hunting down and killing liberal elites, and conservative celebrities are not voicing creative ways of shooting, stabbing or decapitating liberal political figures.

Republican leaders are not alleging that the 2017 shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the recent tragedy in Dayton are the direct results of the polarizing and often shrill rhetoric of Sanders and Warren.

And progressive hosts on the major networks and cable news channels are not targeted for boycotts and firings for their often blunt views, as is now once again the case with Tucker Carlson.

Twitter allows Leftist domestic terrorists to stay on its platform!

Antifa domestic terrorists have put up posters all around DC listing the home addresses of Tucker Carlson and Trump aide Stephen Miller. Twitter blocked the addresses, but is allowing the terrorists to stay on its platform! Ian Miles Cheng reports in Human Events,

The Fox News host wasn’t the only figure whose home address was written on the posters. All Out DC also doxed U.S. government official Stephen Miller.



...The posters feature Carlson’s face blocked out by the AntiFa three-arrow symbol, his home address, the words “Block the Alt-Right,” and a description of Carlson as an “Influencer,” which reads:

...The loosely organized political movement is made up of anarchists and self-proclaimed communists who rally against President Donald Trump, a man whom they falsely accuse of promoting white supremacy.

Best known setting fires and rioting on campus grounds at U.C. Berkeley and vandalizing store fronts, proponents of the movement are self-described “social justice warriors” whom the Department of Homeland Security and other security agencies have designated their actions as “domestic terrorist violence.”

Three members of AntiFa were charged with aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation, and conspiracy, over the attacks of two U.S. Marine reservists. A mob of “10 to 12 people” attacked the two Mexican-American men in Philadelphia, whom they mistakenly identified as members of a right-wing group called the Proud Boys.

"Our way, or you're out!"

Beginning at the 29.51 minute mark of Tucker Carlson's show last night Tucker took on the issue of Tech Tyranny. "Inside the big tech companies political bias is rampant." Tucker interviewed Blake Harris, the author of a book entitled The History of the Future. Harris says that after the 2016 election many employees of Facebook felt they had failed in their mission! Facebook forced out it's creator, Palmer Luckey, after he donated to an anti-Hillary group and admitted that he was a Trump supporter. Zuckerberg wanted him to say that he was a Gary Johnson supporter.

Tucker then concludes that Facebook is totalitarian: "Our way or you're out!"

Tucker Carlson takes on Max Boot and Bill Kristol

I have often read pieces by Ace of Spades critical of Max Boot, who Tucker Carlson refers to sarcastically in the American Conservative as

a Leading Authority on Armed Conflict.

Tucker goes into detail about Boot's rise to prominence in Republican circles.

Listed in one place, Boot’s many calls for U.S.-led war around the world come off as a parody of mindless warlike noises, something you might write if you got mad at a country while drunk. (“I’ll invade you!!!”) Republicans in Washington didn’t find any of it amusing. They were impressed. Boot became a top foreign policy adviser to John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008, to Mitt Romney in 2012, and to Marco Rubio in 2016.

Boot’s stock in the Washington foreign policy establishment rose. In 2018, he was hired by The Washington Post as a columnist. The paper’s announcement cited Boot’s “expertise on armed conflict.”

It is possible to isolate the precise moment that Trump permanently alienated the Republican establishment in Washington: February 13, 2016. There was a GOP primary debate that night in Greenville, South Carolina, so every Republican in Washington was watching. Seemingly out of nowhere, Trump articulated something that no party leader had ever said out loud. “We should never have been in Iraq,” Trump announced, his voice rising. “We have destabilized the Middle East.”

...Republicans in Washington never recovered. When Trump attacked the Iraq War and questioned the integrity of the people who planned and promoted it, he was attacking them. They hated him for that.

Some of them became so angry, it distorted their judgment and character.

This is where Tucker takes aim at Bill Kristol, another favorite target of the Ace of Spades blog.

Under ordinary circumstances, Bill Kristol would be famous for being wrong. Kristol still goes on television regularly, but it’s not to apologize for the many demonstrably untrue things he’s said about the Middle East, or even to talk about foreign policy. Instead, Kristol goes on TV to attack Donald Trump.

Trump’s election seemed to undo Bill Kristol entirely. He lost his job at The Weekly Standard after more than 20 years, forced out by owners who were panicked about declining readership. He seemed to spend most of his time on Twitter ranting about Trump.

Before long he was ranting about the people who elected Trump.

The opening monolog by Tucker Carlson is superb! He informs us how Romney became rich at Bain Capital.

Making the world safe for banking, while simultaneously prosecuting ever more foreign wars. Here in the U.S. and in many other countries, voters are revolting against leaders who refuse to improve their lives.

What if happiness were the goal for America? What would be the ingredients? Dignity, purpose, self-control, independence, and above all, deep relationships with other people.

Culture and economics are inseparably intertwined.

In many ways, rural America now looks like Detroit.

Is marriage now a luxury only the affluent can afford? Both parties are ignoring the crisis in marriage, first in the inner cities, now in rural America which was so hard hit by the loss of good paying jobs.

Is our country fair? Cohesive? Can anyone make a decent living outside of the big cities? Does our country actually care about families? Should we worship market capitalism?

I could see Tucker Carlson running for President! I would like to read his book that is currently on the best seller list.

Isn't he the guy who encourages debate?

Fox News host Tucker Carlson openly discussed the mob that assembled by and vandalized his home Wednesday night on his show the next evening.

Carlson, who’s also a co-founder of The Daily Caller, was at the Fox News studio when the mob showed up at his Washington, D.C., home.

The police are investigating the vandalism as a hate crime.

Carlson admitted that in spite of the upsetting events of the past 24 hours, he had seen proof in the aftermath that America is really a nice country. “If you work in our business, as you know, you can lose sight of that because you see the lunatics. Most people are not lunatics. Most people are humane, and decent and kind,” Carlson said. “It’s just been a great reminder of that and really a wonderful experience.”

“What’s it like to find out that your wife is hiding in the pantry because people are threatening her?” he continued. “I mean it’s upsetting. I guess I would say this. I’ve characterized the antifa people and people like them as protesters, but they are not. They weren’t protesting anything.”

Carlson added that before he was even able to reach his wife by phone, his brother and the police were able to get to her and make sure that she was safe.

“I got a bunch of texts from people, my neighbor saying something terrible is going on at your house. By the time I called my wife, [she] has the police and my brother there. I have a very large brother who lives a couple blocks away, thank heaven. We are close. He was there immediately. She’s standing in the kitchen waiting to go out to dinner, and people started pounding on the door, really hitting the door hard and screaming, threatening. She thought it was a home invasion.”

“She didn’t do anything wrong, why were they screaming at her, I mean the whole thing was completely grotesque. The effect is to make it impossible to open your mail,” Carlson added. “One thing they did, I think the worst thing that they did, was they put my home address on the Internet and they put a poster right in front of my house with my home address on it and they filmed it. They taped it and they put the tape on the Internet. You know, I can’t have my kids stay home alone now. I’m a normal person, I live in a normal neighborhood.”

“We lose sight again of the fact that the country is overwhelmingly normal people who don’t think that this is acceptable. Our conversation publicly has been hijacked by extremists like this and I worry that if we don’t stand up to them and say, I’m sorry, this is not allowed, you can’t threaten people into silence, the rest of us are very passive in the face of this,” he added.

“I’m not personally, I don’t feel threatened physically. But, you know, I have five other people in my house, and maybe they do. That’s the point. If I’m walking down the street and someone comes up and says, I violently disagree with you,” Carlson concluded. “Okay, let me hear about it. But to do this is a form of intimidation. Why are we describing it as a protest? It a protest in the sense that when the mafia tells a store owner, I would hate to have this place destroyed, that’s not a protest, it’s a threat. That’s what this is.”

Carlson called into his own show, which was being hosted by “Fox & Friends” host Brian Kilmeade because Carlson was supposed to be on vacation.

On Wednesday night Tucker Carlson was subject to an outrageous thug assault on his home by pampered decadent "anti-fascists" and "anti-racists" who have no idea what those words mean - and that, when you're battering on a front door and forcing the woman inside to hide in the pantry in terror, you're the fascist. Tucker is one of the sharpest and most perceptive analysts of the real underlying ailments in our society, which is why the mob would just as soon shut him up. I'm privileged to make a small contribution to his show, and to have lent a hand to his recent book launch, and to have hosted him when he's broadcast his show for the full hour from our North Country studio. There would be a big hole in American public discourse if he were to be forced from the scene. So, of course, stupid violent pampered criminal goons who wouldn't last two minutes with him in a debate instead threaten his wife - and his brother, and his college room-mate. And you know they're serious and that this is a strategic choice because they have their latest crappy witless jingle all ready:

This is an appalling reflection on where our politics is headed. In recent years I've seen enough friends in Europe forced out of public life and into hiding by Islamic fanatics in the cause of their lunatic caliphate. To see the same template adopted by 28-year-old Navel-Gazing Studies resistance poseurs is pathetic but disturbing nevertheless. Did they mean to assault him and his family? Or were they just mouthing off? Well, they broke an oak door. But, in any case, that's not a calculation that should be forced on even as decayed a public discourse as ours. These are not the poor and downtrodden: The poseur resistance is largely what Americans call "upper middle-class", for whom identification, arrest, trial and conviction would have serious consequences. We will see whether the District of Columbia has the will to do that - or, as in other US cities, whether they're content to cede the streets to the paramilitary wing of Media Matters.
