Marry up?

Dottie Lamm has been married to former Colorado Governor Dick Lamm fifty years. She says she "married up" back in 1963. However, she writes

Females — who now make up more than 57 percent of college graduates, who are a full 60 percent of graduate school attendees, who have taken most of the leadership positions in their high schools and graduated with higher grades — do not have to marry "up" if they marry at all. They are becoming fully equipped to support themselves.

Only 51 percent of American adults are married today; in 1960, 72 percent were married. And a variety of studies show that it is young males who are more eager to marry than their female counterparts. Furthermore, the statistics may suggest that it will be men who need to "marry up."
