Huck Finn Had Nothing On These Kids

The two teenagers you see in these photos have been building a "fort" down by the creek you see in one of the photos. Both are camera and publicity shy, so I had to be quick with the click. The thirteen-year-old is holding our latest addition to our family, a seven-week-old poodle named Charm.

The materials used to build the fort were mostly obtained from a big dumpster in front of a house that has been under construction nearby. Whatever got thrown away, got used to build the fort. Today was the first time I have seen the fort. It was built entirely by the two teens, ages thirteen and fifteen, with no adult supervision or guidance or input. There is one photo of the inside of the fort, and you can see the water bottles and kleenex and hammer. There are actually two forts; one has an open air roof.

The younger kids love to go to the fort, and I have no doubt they will be building a fort of their own some day. Our seven-year-old is trying his hand with an ax.

They have great creativity. You know, people here actually live in Ranchitos much like this.

Last summer my brothers and I went into the woods behind our parents' house and found the remains of a fort we had built more than 35 years before. Not much was left but more than we expected was still there.

There are people in this world who would love to live in something like that. It would seem like heaven compared to a carboard box! I'm very impressed with these two kids. I didn't even know kids did stuff like this any more. I thought they spent their days playing video games and watching television. There is hope after all! :)

So good to hear kids are still building 'forts'. When I was that
age, the fort was headquarters, meeting place, discussion room and a main center of kid life. Of course it leaked like a sieve and
home looked good when thunderstorms rolled in!
