Ranchers in Colorado better think twice if they think they have friends in the U.S. Department of Agriculture or in the U.S. Senate. The USDA newsletter to its employees warns that "The
production of meat, especially beef (and dairy as well), has a large
environmental impact. According to the U.N., animal agriculture is a
major source of greenhouse gases and climate change. It also wastes
resources. It takes 7,000 kg of grain to make 1,000 kg of beef. In
addition, beef production requires a lot of water, fertilizer, fossil
fuels, and pesticides." The newsletter urges employees to consider going meatless on Mondays.
A group of western senators has written a letter of complaint. No senators from Colorado or New Mexico signed the letter. Note that the U.N. is the source of guidance for the USDA.
