Kids who think their own thoughts

I am so proud of my sons and daughters. They each have a mind of their own. Tonight I was talking with Jon, who is in the eighth grade. In his art class they were studying about the Mona Lisa. He drew a burka on her and asked, would she be the symbol of tranquility and beauty if we could only see her eyes? Jon thinks his own thoughts, and sees through the politically correct bullcrap. He has great insight into what is going on in the world. He has arrived at similar conclusions as many brilliant bloggers I read, and he hasn't even read those blogs! He is a reader, though. He has read every Harry Potter book five or more times. I love watching him grow and develop.

Jon hates the school counselors. I think it is because they are used by school administrators as arms of the administrators in dishing out political correct expectations. The counselor came to his history class today and said, "Someone trying to beat you up? Better to run away and tell a teacher than to stand your ground and defend yourself!"

His favorite period of the school day is lunch, because he gets to play football after eating. He loves the contact. He is the blocker for the quarterback and also the safety who runs after and tackles the guy trying to score touchdowns. In other words, Jon is all boy.

I visited 21-year-old stepson Erik today at his place of work. It is a huge open air hanger-like structure, where Erik works as a diesel mechanic. He figures out what needs to be done to get those huge trucks back on the road. It's a job I couldn't do for even one minute. When he is done with a day's work, he hops on his motorcycle and roars back home to the two-bedroom apartment he rents.
