Wanting to believe

Sports columnist Mark Kizla says that any person caught wearing Steelers colors today in Mile High stadium in Denver should have his ticket confiscated and be promptly escorted to the exit. His meant-to-be-humorous column reminds me of an incident I observed this week. A woman noticed that the man next to her in line was wearing a Steelers shirt. She remarked about it. He responded with really hateful rhetoric about how Tim Tebow is a phony and the Steelers are going to crush him. He went on and on, getting uglier and uglier. She walked away in a huff, but after about four steps, she stopped, turned toward him and said, "God bless you."

It's true, as Woody Paige says in his column today, that the Steelers have the most loyal fan following in the NFL. However, the Broncos, Paige points out, have sold out every home game since 1970. The town is in a funk, though, because the Broncos lost three straight games as they limped into this first game of the playoffs. But the enthusiasm is raging just under the surface. They really do want to believe.
