The meeting took place amid protests from gun-rights advocates who gathered on the streets of this small timber town, accusing Mr. Obama of exploiting the tragedy to push for stricter gun-control laws.Read more here.
Mr. Obama’s intent is to “make it harder and harder for law-abiding citizens to acquire firearms or firearms permits,” said Roseburg resident Gary Schoeller, who came to protest the president’s visit wearing a holstered handgun on his hip. “I believe had at least one person had a firearm in that classroom, that man would not have been able to kill as many people as he did.”
...On the same day as the president’s visit, authorities in Arizona and Texas reported two other campus shootings. A confrontation between two groups of students at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff escalated into gunfire early Friday, which left one person dead and three others wounded.
In Houston, a shooting at a residential complex near Texas Southern University left one dead, and put that campus on lockdown. Two suspects were in custody in Houston, and one was in custody in Flagstaff, authorities in both states said.
