Head of Senate Democrats Hangs Up On Associated Press Reporter

Senator Harry Reid hung up on an Associated Press reporter who was inquiring about one of Senator Reid's Nevada land deals. The deal with a a guy tied to mob cases netted Senator Reid $700,000 profit. Senate ethics rules require a senator to report any deal involving investment properties, but Reid chose to hide the transaction.

Islamist Man Wanted to "Kill As Many Innocent People As Possible"

A thirty-four-year old man was arrested in Britain today. The man was raised a Hindu and is the son of a banker in England, where he went to high school. He converted to Islam at age twenty. Isn't that a surprise? His goal was to kill as many innocent people as possible by blowing up financial institutions in New York and buildings in England.

A New Low For The United States Senate

John Kerry has brought new shame to himself and to the U.S. Senate.
In an interview with HBO's cynical comedian Bill Mahrer, Kerry jokes about going to 1600 Pennslyvania Avenue to kill George Bush. View the video here, and see if you think there is any way it can be justified as anything other than being in extremely poor taste.
Update: All Things Beautiful writes about the bitterness and envy that is so obvious in lefties like Kerry. "And the root cause for such ironically domineering attitude, as it has been shown time and time again in the Left's campaigning style and content, is that the vast majority of its base is driven in their personal lives by destructive emotions such as envy, resentment, bitterness and most of all, pure and gut-wrenching hatred which, like any pressure cooker under too much heat, needs to release its steam through the emergency valve." She also quotes Peggy Noonan, writing recently in the Wall Street Journal: "What is most missing from the left in America is an element of grace--of civic grace, democratic grace, the kind that assumes disagreements are part of the fabric, but we can make the fabric hold together." Can I hear a big amen?

The ACLU Succeeds in Effort to Give Illegal Immigrants A Chance to Cancel Votes of American Citizens!

Arizona voters passed a law requiring voters to show I.D. The A.C.L.U. has succeeded in getting an order from the leftist judges at the ninth circuit to stop enforcement of the law. This will, of course, allow illegal immigrants to cancel out the votes of American citizens...in America!

Update: October 20, 2006 The United States Supreme Court today ruled that Arizona may go ahead and require photo identification in this November's election!

JC Watts Gives More Kudos to Seven-Eleven

Former Congressman JC Watts has some more thoughts about Seven-Eleven and Citgo, and "me first" politicians. Watts himself should perhaps be a person we should consider as a candidate for President some day.

Helping Illegal Immigrants Avoid Deportations: After They Commit Crimes Against Americans!

Kudos to the Denver Post! I never thought I would ever write those words! Yesterday they ran a front page across the top headline and story revealing Bill Ritter's record as Denver District Attorney. He okayed "agricultural trespassing" plea bargains in 152 cases involving serious crimes of assault and drug dealing committed by people who were in this country illegally! The result? The scumbags were able to avoid deportation and stick around here in Colorado, so they can find more opportunities to commit crimes against Americans.

Show me the agricultural land in Denver. My wife needs a place to graze her horses and goats.

Even though the Post has enthusiastically endorsed Ritter for Governor, they still had the integrity to place this story where it belongs. Kudos!

Video of Bin Laden with 9-11 Plotters

Want more reasons why our military needs to be able to detain, interrogate, and then lock up terrorists? Check out this post by Don Surber.

Which Political Party Is More Likely To Protect America From Its Enemies?

Whom shall we turn to to protect America from enemies within and outside America? The Democrats put forward John Murtha as someone we should listen to. The American Spectator has made available the FBI transcript of their sting operation against Murtha. Read the whole transcript here, if you want to understand for yourself how utterly disgusting this man really is.

The Investors Business Daily lists 97 facts of recent history, starting with well-meaning but dangerously naive Jimmy Carter. Understanding these facts can only lead us to one conclusion. We will clearly be less safe if Democrats are elected to run our federal government.

Colorado's Democrat Senator Salazar was one of the few to vote Friday against the 700 mile fence to protect us from illegal immigrants invading our country across our southern border. Not even Kennedy or Clinton joined him!

Poor Me, I'm a Victim!

The killer in the most recent Colorado school shooting, on the day of the shooting, mailed a goodbye letter to a brother. The brother gave it, unopened, to ATF officials. The local media has not printed it, but they tell us that the killer spoke about being abused by his father as a child. This is becoming so common to every person who decides he is entitled violently to abuse another person or persons. First, establish the fact that you have been victimized. Then, anything you decide to do will be justified by the fact of your own victimization.

A WMD Attack On The United States?

Confederate Yankee reminds us that there has already been one (and only one) WMD attack on our country. It was in 1993: the first attempt to bring down the World Trade Towers. The person who put cyanide in the bomb that was a dud fled to Iraq, where he was protected by Saddam Hussein until our 2003 attack, which resulted in the deaths of Saddam's evil sons and the imprisonment and trial of Saddam.

Let's All Go For A Big Gulp!

According to Hugh Hewitt, 7/11 has announced that they will no longer buy Venezuelan oil!

John 3:16 (The Version According to My Five-Year-Old)

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have an interesting life." The author of this new version is on the left in the above picture.

Shot In The Head?

The shooting victim was sixteen, and has a twin brother. A hospital spokesperson believes she was shot in the head. The family is requesting that no further information be released about the girl.

What was the four o'clock deadline about? The hostage-taker broke off negotiations at 3:30, giving officers a four o'clock deadline. Was he threatening to kill someone?. Jeffco SWAT was there at the second floor classroom, and ultimately took the man into custody.

I have to take one of our foster babies to a visit with her mom, and will not be able to post again for at least two and one-half hours. Try going to KHOW radio on-line.

"Dad, I Love You!"

One of the two final hostages sent a text message to her father, who was outside the building 75 yards away while his daughter was being held captive. The message was "Dad, I Love You!" This information is from another student's father, who was standing next to the father.

The gunman is dead, and his identity has not yet been disclosed.

Sheriff: "Our Important Goal Was To Get The Kids Out of There!"

The girl was shot once, and the Sheriff believes the perp shot the girl, but he does not want to say for sure until an investigation is completed.

Update from the Sheriff

The Sheriff of Park County said that they were making progress, and hostages were released one at a time. The gunman then gave law enforcement a 4 p.m. deadline, so officers decided to intervene. The sheriff still does not know the gunman's identity, and the parents of the girl who was shot have not been contacted. The Sheriff does know the girl and her family, because he has worked in that sparsely populated rural area 36 years. He did say that he has some "intell" that he is choosing not to reveal at this time. He said the gunman broke off the negotiations. He was shielding himself with one of the hostages. They had him contained in a clssroom. He refused to talk directly with the officers, making the female hostages act as go-betweens. All of the hostages were female. The Sheriff does not know why the gunman went to that particular classroom. this started at 11:20 this morning.

"Something Threatening Occurred"

Officers exploded a device to divert the man's attention. Dan Caplis of KHOW radio speculated that something threatening occurred, because four hostages had previously been released, but officers still decided to take aggressive action to try to rescue the girls.

Gunman is Reported Dead

The gunman is dead, according to KUSA.

Girl Will Be Flown to Saint Anthony's Central Hospital in Denver

One person heard from a friend who was listening to the SWAT radio. The friend told him that the perpetrator shot the girl, and that the law enforcement officers shot the perp.

Update: A Person Has Been Taken Out Of The School On A Stretcher

Television station KUSA is reporting that one girl has been shot, and that the hostage situation has ended. The gunman has been captured. One girl in critical condition, and the other girl not injured.

Update: Flight For Life Helicopter Is Firing Up Its Engines

A stretcher was carried into the school, and the helicopter has fired up its engines.

Update

The man is saying that he has a bomb in his backpack. The bomb squad and SWAT team is on the scene. There is no confirmation by law enforcement of the earlier report that it may be a custody dispute.

Update: The Man's Identity is Not Known to Law Enforcement

Law enforcement has no information about the man! They have not established "reliable" communication with him. The school is Platte Canyon High School. It is just outside the mountain town of Bailey, Colorado. It is on Highway 285. My wife and children are due to come back home on that highway later today from a trip to Durango in southwest Colorado. I stayed home with the babies, because they had scheduled visits with their biological parents.

There is no report that anyone has been shot. There were originally six hostages, and now there are two. Law enforcement is interviewing the four hostages who have been released. No reported injuries. Police spokeswoman says "We'd like to know what he wants." Many of the first responders were also first responders at Columbine.

In Progress: A School Shooting and Hostages Taken

There is a school shooting and hostage situation going on at a school in the mountains just west of the Denver metro area. A thirty-five-year-old man came into the high school armed with a gun and perhaps a bomb. He took five or six hostages, and reportedly released all but two high school girls. The man apparently made some demands of a teacher. When those demands were refused, he fired a shot or some shots. The two girls may be related to the man, and it may be a custody dispute situation.

The Importance Of a Good Infancy

Seeing former President Clinton losing it with Chris Wallace Sunday reminds me of the importance of infancy.

Presently we are caring for two foster children. One will be one-year-old on October 4, and the other will be one-year-old on October 29. Both are girls. The latter has been with us since March 3, and is strongly bonded to all members of our family. She starts each day with excited anticipation, knowing that there will be much to explore and lots of fun all day long. She did not come to us that way. She came into foster care because her biological father beat up her biological mother, who had a history of meth abuse. There are two older sisters who have mostly grown up in foster care. She was easily frightened by any loud noise. She often looked stressed. Now she seems to have undergone a complete rewiring, with the frontal part of the brain predominating over the brain stem of raw emotion. She knows she can trust us. She knows we love her.

That has not yet happened for our other foster daughter. We first got her when her mother broke her leg in February. We had her only a few days in February, because Human Services found a relative who said she could care for her. In June that relative said she could no longer care for her, and she came back to live with us. The mother still has a criminal case pending on the broken leg. She is also ready to give birth to her second child. The Human Services people want to see how she does with the new baby before deciding to return our foster daughter to the mom.

Unlike our other foster daughter who has been with us almost seven months, the second one wakes up each morning expecting the worst. Her favorite thing to do is to yell loudly, expressing displeasure much like former President Clinton did with Chris Wallace. She yells if we have to leave the room to answer a phone. She yells if we set her down to fold laundry. She yells if breakfast, lunch, or dinner is finished. She is grossly overweight. We believe the mom and the relative constantly gave her food to mollify her discontent. The mom always urges me to give her a bottle on the ride back to our home after a visit, so I no longer even bring a bottle. Mom and the relatives told us she would never crawl, because nobody in their family had ever crawled. After much perseverance on the part of some very good physical and occupational therapists, ignoring her deafening screams, she now crawls. Mostly she prefers not to move around much, preferring instead to yell at those of us who do. However, when I endeavor to change her poopy diaper, she kicks and squirms and tries to crawl away, laughing with great pleasure at the inconvenience she is causing me. We shall continue to greet her each morning with enthusiam and happy faces, hoping to get that rewiring started.

Boycott Citgo! (And Maybe Peanuts, Too, While We Are At It)

There is something we all can do to let Hugo Chavez know we listened to his speech at the United Nations. We can drive right past our usual 7/11 stop, and leave the Citgo gas pumps alone. Very alone. Citgo uses Venezuelan oil to make its gasoline. Although I am certain he will still find a way get his oil on the market, at least this will teach 7/11 and Chavez that we are listening, and that we know that real power is with the average person, which is the basis of our freedom and liberty. The people of Venezuela do not know freedom and liberty, despite what Jimmy Carter implied when he hurriedly certified the Chavez election. Maybe peanuts should be on the boycott list, too?

Ratting on Oneself

Today our two-year-old came up to me and said "Nene said fucking! See, she said it again!" Nene is the nickname some have given our two-year-old. The best reply I could give her was to say, "If people hear you say that word, they will think you do not have any parents." Then, when I thought about it, I realized that people may think she does have parents, and that might be where she heard the word, instead of from her three teenage siblings.

What Issues Are Most Important?

One of the most interesting political questions in the next year or so will be whom the Republicans choose as their candidate for President in 2008. Rudy Giuliani has appeal because he is a fiscal conservative and is very tough on fighting crime and terror. Can the libertarian and social conservative wings of the party rally around this man? It seems to me that he appeals more to the former.

What compromises will each of these two major factions be willing to make in order to keep the party in the majority? Maybe the Democrats will nominate someone who will unify the Republicans, kind of like Bill Clinton did in 2000.

The war against the Islamofascists seems to be a unifying factor for the two major factions in the Republican party. However, the expansion of government under Republican rule has really angered the libertarians, and the recent approval of the "morning after" pill has infuriated the social conservatives, who also are not happy about the growth of illegal immigration.

What issues are most important to you? Which ones are you willing to compromise on? To me, far and away the most important issue is our security. If we are defeated by the fascists, we will not have any of those other things we hold dear. If the Democrats achieve victory in the House and Senate in 2006, will they undercut the President's efforts to upgrade the security of our country? Senator Lieberman's defeat in the Connecticut Democrat primary would seem to be an indication that the answer to that question would be in the affirmative.

Home Schooling Gems

I must remember to post these gems as they occur.

Teacher to kindergartener son: Do you know what an author is? "Yes! You sit down at the computer and type in the words on your blog!"

Two-year-old: "Daddy, I've got a bloody nose on my knee!"

Today we have three extra kids here from another homeschooling family, making a grand total of eleven children. I am sure the neighbors will appreciate the extra joyful noise! The two children missing from the picture are our precious ten and eleven month-old foster babies. One has been with us since March and the other since June (her second time in our home: in February her mother broke the baby's leg, and she was with us for just a few days before being placed with a relative. That did not work out).

Stop Apologizing! You Will Never Please the Professional Victims and Their Cohorts in the Old Media!

Just as in Virginia with Senator Allen, Colorado Democrats and their allies in the Denver Post are working over Bob Beauprez in his campaign to become Colorado's governor. Beauprez's gaffe was that he said the abortion rate among black Americans is as high as 70%. According to David Harsanyi, the Guttmacher Institute puts the figure at 43% for 2002. Is any so-called leader of Colorado blacks saying anything about this appalling statistic? No, the "leaders" quoted by the Post are only talking about Beauprez hurting their feelings.

The Post writers, with Harsanyi being the exception, are also constantly referring to a gaffe made by Beauprez's running mate, a former child protection worker and County Commisioner in Grand Junction. She compared gay marriage with bestiality, as the journalists remind us every day. The Denver Post will endorse the Democrat. That is as sure a bet as anyone could ever make. So Mr. Beauprez and his running mate can ignore the daily attacks, stop apologizing, and provide some moral leadership by actually taking clear stands on issues the voters are concerned about!

Update: Ben DeGrow has more information about the role of the Denver Post in helping the Democrats.

Are Christians Allowed to Defend Themselves?

We attend church regularly. There are many things we like about it. It is a racially integrated congregation. There is a loving spirit, and much praise is given to God. The music is superb.

But I am frustrated. Here we are in a world in which Islamofascists want to kill everyone who does not submit to their fascist ideology, and for five years now, not a word about it from the pulpit. We are told to be compassionate, to turn the other cheek. And let them incinerate our children? No thanks!

2008 Will Shake Up Both Political Parties

Michael Barone notes that 2008 will be the first time in eighty years that a sitting president or vice president will not be running for president. More importantly, the front runners of both parties have lots of strong opposition within their respective parties. Right now the front runners are Giuliani and McCain for the Republicans and Bill Clinton's wife for the Democrats. One reason these three have risen to the top is that they have all demonstrated that they can handle crises and endure difficult times. Read the whole thing here.

I would add that the crises Giuliani and McCain handled were not of their own making. The crises Mrs. Clinton faced were the result of her own choices.

Should Airport Screeners Focus on Finding Terrorists or Potential Weapons?

Snarky Bastards highlights a recent column from the New York Post by Llana Freeman. It is full of good ideas about how to improve airport screening. Instead of just screening things, isn't it about time we screen individuals? According to Apollo in the comments section, a rollout is already planned to do just that.

More on Abused Children Who Become Abusers Themselves

In my most recent post I wrote about the abused child who became an abuser. When my wife and I decided to become foster parents, we opened our home to children of any age. Now we take only babies. Why? Because the odds are much higher that abused children older than a few months will themselves be abusers. We will no longer expose our own children to abuse.

Let me tell you about one of our experiences. We took in a sibling group which included a six-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy, and a three-year-old girl. The six-year-old girl molested our four-year-old son and her own sister. We filed a report, in hopes that we could get appropriate treatment for the little molestor. The caseworker assigned to investigate called us on her cell phone to get directions to our house, and oh, by the way, informed us that we were the focus of her investigation, and if she did not like what she saw, she would close us down as foster parents! We survived that investigation, and the girl never got treatment specific to her offense. All she got was a naive graduate student therapist who spent the entire time trying to get this little manipulator to like her!

The boy was the angriest little human being I think I have ever known. The mother was an alcoholic, who was utterly undependable. The fathers finally got custody of the children.

A Sad Story

Today I got a phone call from a wonderful woman who, with her husband, adopted a ten-year-old child when I was a child protection worker. This particular child had been repeatedly raped in her first six years by her father, who is serving a sixteen year sentence in prison. When they adopted her they knew she had a history of molesting other children, but they thought they could tough love her into making good choices.

Unfortunately, the child's identity is so mixed up with the twisted sexual components, that she has never progressed beyond that in her own life. She also has became a sex addict, a molestor of little children, a chronic liar, and a constant and skillful manipulator.

The adoptive parents are now trying to gain custody of this girl's two-year-old son, whom they have raised since his birth. The girl is now a twenty-two-year-old woman. She abducted her child last weekend, and the police returned the child to her adoptive parents, who have never given up on her, but also have never been able to save her from herself. She now lives with two men who are here illegally from Mexico, and is threatening to take her child to Mexico. She has also made threats to do harm to the adoptive parents, who have endured incredible suffering financially and emotionally. She has been fired from twelve jobs, almost always because of stealing from her employers. Welfare set her and her son up in a beautiful two bedroom apartment, free day care, and financial assistance, all of which she blew on cocaine, marijuana, and meth. She will probably get free legal assistance in this custody fight, even though the adoptive parents have to pay big bucks for their attorney, because they are not yet indigent.

The Incurious Old Media

Again today Anchoress is writing about a subject that I have been thinking about. This morning on Peter Boyles' radio talk show, the guest was award-winning television investigative news reporter John Ferrugia. Peter was congratulating Mr. Ferrugia on his "pit bull" questioning of Boulder D.A. Mary Lacy in yesterday's "news" conference. However, when Peter tried to hand-feed Ferrugia some relevant internet sources about University of Colorado journalism professor Michael Tracy, Mr. Ferrugia became upset. There is a real prejudice on the part of many in main stream media toward internet sources. As a result, someone like Mr. Boyles, who will go anywhere to find truth, is far ahead of others in the media in his knowledge of the Jon Benet Ramsey murder case. A closed mind is a terrible waste!

More Wisdom From The Anchoress

The Anchoress has posted an important piece challenging both the left and the right to guard against fascistic tendencies in their group think. "The irony is this: fascism can only live in a group, and it can only be defeated by the individual. In order to shrivel the first buds of fascism in our social and political institutions, we need to look inward - each of us, alone - and strike at its roots within ourselves."

How Do We Get Out Of This? I've Got It: We'll Portray Ourselves As Victims!

Peter Boyles speculates that the Boulder D.A. must now be trying to figure out how to get herself out of this mess she has created. Same for Michael Tracey. But Boyles believes they will both try the "I'm a victim" route. Tracey will say, Gee, all I did was turn over some emails to the Rocky Mountain News! The D.A. will say, I am a victim of the media!

By the way, Mr. Boyles revealed that Sonoma, California authorities notified Boulder authorities five years ago about Mr. Karr. Boulder showed no interest then. Why now?

The New Ward Churchill!

For those of you who are interested in the Jon Benet Ramsey mystery, I strongly recommend you listen on line to the Peter Boyles talk radio show, which airs from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mountain time Monday through Friday at www.khow.com. Today Peter had a guest who is a participant in an internet group called Forums For Justice. They can be reached here.

University of Colorado journalism professor Michael Tracey seems to be the person who is driving this latest Jon Benet Ramsey hoopla, by feeding his version of the story to a local television station, KUSA. Mr. Boyles believes Tracey has been "grooming" John Mark Karr to become a suspect in the murder. Tracey has been corresponding with Karr for the last four years via emails. In 2004 Tracy produced a documentary alleging to nail another suspect. This is where the Forum For Justice group comes in. A blogger in Scotland got her camera and took a picture of a police report used in Tracey's documentary. The report listed a case number, which identified the suspect Tracey was alleging to be the killer of Jon Benet. Within a few minutes another member of the forum was able to contact the man, who then called Chief Investigator Tom Bennett at the D.A.'s office in Boulder, who assured the man that he is not a suspect. Like Mr. Karr, the man was not in Colorado at the time of the murder of Jon Benet! Tracey was exposed as a fraud. Another local journalist, Patty Calhoun of Westword, has dubbed Tracey the new Ward Churchill.

The concept of "grooming" is an important one to those of us who have worked in the field of child protection. Sex offenders groom their intended victims in various ways in order to set them up for victimization. I think it is interesting that Mr. Boyles is using the word to describe the manipulation of Mr. Karr by Mr. Tracey. Boyles also believes that Tracey, the Boulder D.A. Mary Lacy, and KUSA have all been manipulated ("groomed") by the Ramseys.

Back To School!

In addition to caring for our two ten-month-old foster babies and our two-and-one-half-year-old, we are homeschooling our other five children. This year we have a junior in high school, an eighth-grader, a seventh-grader, a first-grader, and one in kindergarten. Never a dull moment!

Why Does The World Hate The U.S.?

Recently Michael Medved gave a talk in Aurora Colorado which my wife and I attended. His focus was the title of this blog post. He proposed four possibilities for why the world hates the U.S.

The first is envy. People hate what they cannot have and cannot replicate. Here in America individuals have more choice about their own destiny than anywhere else on earth. The American Dream is to strive to be whatever we want to be. Medved cited the example of Arnold Schwarzenager, who had a dream and came to America to begin his life anew. In his new book Right Turns Mr. Medved told about his grandmother who lost five children to starvation in Russia, then, at age 49 gave birth to Michael's father, who came to America and lived his dream as a scientist/astronaut.

The second is the legacy of communism. The majority of the world has been raised under the tyranny of communism. The communists drilled anti-America hatred into the heads of two billion people, from childhood on. Although many of these regimes have fallen, there seems to be something of a renaissance of communist states, especially in Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Brazil, and Bolivia.

The third is popular culture. The world sees us in the images packaged by Hollywood: corruption, violence, failed marriages, sexual promiscuity. Medved points out that many people in the world, including in America, are actually quite conservative in the way they live their lives. But, that is not the image of America packaged by Hollywood.

The fourth is American exceptionalism. The Pilgrims and Puritans came to America not so much to escape religious oppression as to build Christian communities here in America. The A.C.L.U. may deny it, but this country has always been different because of profound faith, mostly Christian. Most Americans believe that God has His hand on this country, and most Americans are committed to living in such a way as to honor God. America is a country based on ideas. One idea is that government should have a limited role in human affairs. We believe that if we take individual responsibility we can shape our own destiny.

More Desperation From Old Media Hacks

More vicious work today by old media cartoonist Mike Keefe. The cartoon above is a remarkable likeness of radio talk show host Peter Boyles. The cartoonist wants readers to think that for Boyles it is all about his shows' ratings, and that Boyles could not care less about justice for Jon Benet Ramsey. This is another example of the old media desperately trying to salvage their reputations by unfairly characterizing the hard work and due diligence done by a new media vigorous seeker of the truth, Peter Boyles.

"We're In A New World!"

The publisher of the Rocky Mountain News, John Temple, writes today that there is one big difference in the Jon Benet story today as compared to the original story ten years ago. It is now an internet story, and it moves much more quickly than 1996. He also notes that he now realizes that a local newspaper like the Rocky "can now speak to a global audience in real time, once the province only of major broadcasters." Furthermore, he notes that their reporters no longer write for the paper; they write for the web, where their stories can be noticed immediately by sites such as the one run by Matt Drudge.

Read the whole thing.

We Could Do A Better Job, "If We Felt Like It!"

Ace of Spades has a post today that I think is right on target: "I know the media, which loves to voice its not-so-secret belief that they are smarter than everyone in the world and could do everyone else's job better, if they felt like it, is going to play the "Mary Lacy is a dumb duped dummy" meme constantly if this goes south, but they really ought to get over themselves, and stop pandering to an audience that also needs a "villain" or at least an incompetent somewhere in the "story."

Right now the people who are being blasted in the media are the people who dug the deepest and worked the hardest to find the truth in the murder of Jon Benet. I am reminded of the Rathergate incident, in which CBS for weeks attacked those who had found the truth in the obviously forged documents concerning President Bush's National Guard service. Those bloggers were attacked unmercifully by CBS, who later quietly got rid of Rather and his producer when the truth became widely known.

Currently the villain is Peter Boyles, who doggedly sought the truth in the Jon Benet Ramsey murder case. Doggedly? Now I know the derivation of that word! Peter reminds me of my two male dogs who refuse to let go when in a fight. Peter was attacked by Vincent Carroll, the editor of the Rocky Mountain News yesterday, but then when Peter had him on his radio talk show the Rocky editor could only say, "I don't know this case as well as you!" Then give the man some respect! I know of no one in the media who knows this case better than Peter Boyles. But the media elites always believe they could do a better job if they were as "obsessed" as Peter. By using the word "obsessed," the Rocky editor cleverly put down Peter, and for what? For taking the time and energy to dig deep and do the hard work to try to ascertain the truth in the story.

Who Will Be The Next To Apologize?

The American teaching second grade in Thailand has given his bizarre confession of the killing of Jon Benet Ramsey. Local and national media are attacking people like Peter Boyles of KHOW radio in Denver, who closely followed the evidence as it was unveiled, and strongly suspected an inside job, rather than an intruder. So, if and when the teacher's confession is proven to be bogus, will all those self righteous critics who are now attacking Boyles rush front and center with their apologies to him?

Traveling The World On Behalf of Children?

Crisismesh today posted the resume of John Mark Karr, who has confessed in Thailand to the 1996 murder of Jon Benet Ramsey. It seems Mr. Karr has been quite a world traveler, although there is no mention of Boulder, Colorado being one of his stops.

"I Got Questions"

Well, it is time for me to apologize for my own cynicism. I said "not a chance," when I asked if those who had gained national prominence in their coverage of the Jon Benet Ramsey case would apologize if Mr. Karr is the killer. Two of the local guys who did attain national prominence, Craig Silverman and Peter Boyles, have both said they would apologize if there is corroboration. Peter Boyles took a lot of heat from callers and emailers this morning, but hung in there and signed off by saying, "I got questions." Indeed.

Update: Karr's Ex-Wife Says He was with Her In Alabama at the Time of the Killing of Jon Benet

Fox News is reporting: "A Petaluma woman who said she was Karr's ex-wife told KGO-TV in San Francisco that they got divorced after his arrest.

Laura Karr said her ex-husband spent a lot of time reading up on the cases of Ramsey and Polly Klaas, who was abducted from her Petaluma home and slain in 1993. She said she does not believe her former husband was involved in JonBenet's killing and said she was with him in Alabama at the time of the Christmas 1996 homicide."

As Dan Caplis theorized on the Caplis and Silverman radio program this afternoon, maybe Mr. Karr is making this confession in order to be brought back to Boulder, instead of doing time in a jail in Thailand! Peter Boyles' skepticism is appearing justified. If the guy was not in Colorado on the night Jon Benet was murdered, then he could not have been her killer.

Update: One apology

Craig Silverman, a local attorney and radio talk show host, said he was one who had been on local radio hundreds of times and national televison hundreds of times analyzing the Ramsey case. Mr. Silverman apologized twice on air this afternoon for anything he might have said that led to the huge local and national suspicion that the Ramseys killed Jon Benet. He said that if Mr. Karr is indeed the killer of Jon Benet, then Patsy and John Ramsey are the victims of the most unfair avalanche of suspicion in American history.

Peter Boyles, a nominee for a coveted Marconi national award for excellence in radio broadcasting, did not apologize. In fact, he chastised and angrily confronted Silverman. I was one who was glued to Mr. Boyles' coverage of the Ramsey case in the nineties. He filled the airwaves with his contempt of both John and Patsy Ramsey, just like he now fills the airwaves with his barely containable contempt for George W. Bush. Later in the afternoon Boyles called Silverman back and was calmer. In response to a question from either Silverman or his radio partner Dan Caplis, Boyles said that if the man's DNA is found on Jon Benet, he would accept that the man's confession is valid.

Jon Benet Ramsey's Alleged Killer Arrested in Thailand

News is just breaking that authorities have arrested a second grade teacher, 41-year-old John Mark Karr, in Bangkok Thailand. Law enforcement officers say that the man has confessed to the murder of Jon Benet, and that he has given details that only could have been known by the killer.

If this is true, I am drawn back to Dr. Sanity's discussion today about denial and displacement, especially displacement. The same people who today are filling the airwaves with their hatred and utter contempt for President Bush, were filling the airwaves back in 1996 with their hatred and utter contempt for Jon Benet's parents. These media stars got themselves on national television, and increased their local listening audience significantly. Mrs. Ramsey died recently from ovarian cancer. Do you suppose they will now apologize to Mr. Ramsey? Not a chance.

More On Denial

Dr. Sanity has a new post today on the huge problem of denial and displacement so prevalent in today's world.

Denial

Both Denver papers today have stories about a woman who lives in a trailer park near Strasburg Colorado on the plains east of Denver. Allegedly this woman gave birth to a baby last October, then put the child in the back of her boyfriend's pick-up truck. The truck was not being used, so it and the baby sat in front of her trailer through the winter, spring, and summer until the boyfriend recently sold the truck for $100.00. The purchaser of the truck found the remains of the baby and called police. The woman is now in police custody.

One Cosmos has a different example of denial: those who deny 9-11-2001. His piece is entitled "Your Psychodollars at Work and the Tax on Liberal Fantasy." Dr. Sanity says, "At the risk of getting repetitious, the denial and displacement are becoming so obvious that even a Democrat should be able to see them.

I guess they will only open their eyes when they achieve their primary purpose for existing: getting back control of the oval office."

One Cosmos Under God

Dr. Sanity writes today about the writings of Dr. Robert Godwin, who has written a book with the same title as this post. His blog at One Cosmos is a daily must read for me. He has a wonderful humor, makes me think about things I need to think about, and regularly pulverizes the left with just a few well chosen words. (It takes him a little longer to explain One Cosmos Under God).

A Hunger For Beauty

The Anchoress has a post today in which she confesses that she has a hunger for beauty. Then she says that is proof that she is even weirder than we thought. On the contrary, I share her hunger for beauty, and I don't think it is one bit weird. She mentions her enjoyment of looking at beautiful fabric, which I also share.

I also have a dozen gardens surrounding our home. Every other day I cut flowers so we always have at least two vases of fresh cut flowers in the house. I also enjoy buying clothes for my wife and for the kids.

A Night On The Town

Last night Colleen and I headed to downtown Denver for a rare night on the town. We planned to go to the historic Mayan Theater to see a satirical movie about a dysfunctional family ("Little Miss Sunshine"). The Mayan has three theaters, but only one ticket window, so one of the expectations is a long line outside the theater. Colleen offered to get out of the car and stand in line while I looked for a parking space.

Fifteen minutes later I arrived at the theater, and noticed that there had been an auto accident right next to the theater. A man had attempted to jaywalk or run across the street instead of at the appropriate crosswalk, where he would have had to wait for the light to turn green! The car he was trying to beat did not see him, and hit him head on, the result of which was the shattering of the car windshield and several of the man's major bones. A doctor was in line at the theater, and he went over and checked the man briefly, and immediately came back to the line and announced, "He has a pulse." I am pretty sure the doctor was waiting in line to see Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," so obviously that would take precedence over spending more than a few seconds with the unsuccessful jayrunner.

The driver of the car was a very tall twenty-something blonde guy with braided hair. His passenger was a younger black woman. It was the passenger side window that was shattered. Colleen noticed that the young black woman seemed to be distressed and perhaps traumatized (her companion was ignoring her completely while talking on a cell phone), so she went over to comfort her. The young woman was sure that she and her companion would be deemed at fault. Over and over she said,"We didn't do anything wrong," or "We weren't speeding." Colleen comforted her and talked with her, reassuring her that there were many witnesses. Nevertheless, the woman continued to be certain that she and her companion would be held responsible. A black woman came over to the car. Colleen met her, then introduced her to the woman. The woman then broke down and let out a torrent of sobs, feeling safer now with the black woman to express her fears that she would somehow be held responsible for the behavior of the idiot jayrunner.

The first responders came and took the guy to the hospital. No one from the ambulance paid any attention to the young woman. The police arrived and talked with the two people who had been in the car. The officer, to his credit, saw that the woman was traumatized, and called for an ambulance for her. As a matter of fact, she had just been released from a hospital emergency room, where she had gone to get treatment for a very sore throat. She was taken away in the second ambulance just as the theater posted a sign announcing that our movie was "Sold Out."

I remembered that Al Gore was in Denver signing copies of his book with the same title as the movie, and said to Colleen, "Let's go listen to him speak: I can write about it in the blog!" We hurried over to the wonderful Tattered Cover bookstore, but were too late to hear the inventor of the internet.

So, we ended the evening by going to our favorite Denver restaurant, The Wynkoop, which is one of several Denver resturants owned by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

The Recomposed Self

Shelby Steele wrote an excellent book about sixteen years ago entitled The Content of Our Character. In it he wrote a chapter about what he called The Recomposed Self. It is an amazing concept that is very much alive today, and not just with blacks. Steele shows how in order not to face one's fears and perceived vulnerabilities, one denies those feelings, then distorts reality to some other theme, most commonly that of victimization. When we choose to think of ourselves as victims, we are released from responsibility to face our difficulty rationally, spared some guilt and accountability, and our innocence is restored. Anybody think this applies to today's world? How about to each of us as individuals?

On Second Thought...

Kudos to the Rocky Mountain News for digging deeper into the life of alleged serial killer Robert Charles Browne. In their first report they could only find people who said he was polite and respectful. Now they have talked to one of his six ex-wives, who told of his brutal temper and savage physical abuse. If the powers that be in the newspaper business allowed for in-depth reporting such as in this case, maybe their financial situation would not be in such a horrendous decline. I am still curious to hear something about his relationship with his parents.

Truth, Reality, and the Misuse of Language

Dr. Sanity has a wonderful post today about truth, reality, and the misuse of language. She concludes that truth and reality do matter, and will ultimately win out. Our opponents on the left and among the terrorists more and more are using language not to seek the truth, not to discover reality, but to silence opposition. She urges those of us who are "not deluded by this madness" to fight it with every ounce of energy we can muster. Read the whole thing at www.drsanity.blogspot.com.

Hugh Hewitt Wows Them In Colorado

Radio talk show host and blogger extraordinaire Hugh Hewitt gave a speech to a very large and enthusiastic crowd at the Radisson Hotel in Aurora, Colorado last night. Hugh urged the Republican crowd to work harder than ever this year in order to prevent Democrats from taking control of the legislative branch in this fall's elections.

One of the most interesting things Hugh did with the crowd was to take a straw poll of their preferences regarding Republican presidential candidates. He only gave the crowd five choices: Romney, Frist, Giuliani, McCain, and Allen. Virginia Senator George Allen was the runaway favorite in this crowd, probably because he is strong on all of the issues that these particular Coloradans hold dear. Giuliani was next, and Frist and Romney seemed pretty even in the show of hands vote. McCain was far and away the least popular. One woman was upset that Hugh did not include Newt Gingrich. Hugh said Newt has no chance, because he has been too outspoken, and had put his views down in written form for a very long time. My own favorite candidate would have been Condi Rice. Hugh said that he believes that Dr. Rice realizes that running for President would be a very difficult way to initiate a person's first run for elected office. I still believe she would be capable of meeting the challenge. Another person was really pissed that Hugh did not include Dick Cheney. Hugh said he has been a guest in the Cheney home, that he formerly worked as chief counsel for Mrs. Cheney, and that he knew that the Cheneys no longer wished to serve in public office after they complete their current term.

Hugh revealed that he is writing a book to be titled, Mitt Romney, A Mormon in the White House? He wants to know if voters would vote against Romney just because he is a Mormon. He said Romney seems like a great candidate. He believes Romney is very bright. He likes the way Romney is taking on the challenge of "Big Dig." Hugh's point is that we should elect whomever is the best candidate, without regard to his or her religious preference. Hugh said he would support whomever the party nominated.

Hugh urged the crowd to come together and support the Republican candidate, even if it is McCain. That comment produced some groans in response from the audience. However, Hugh warned people not to limit themselves to one or two issues. Strong defense, a reverence for life, stopping illegal immigration, gun rights, and reigning in government spending were some of the issues that seemed important to this crowd. But Hewitt warned that we may not get a candidate who is good on all of these issues. Hugh, like myself, believes that the most important priority is to find a candidate who is strong on national defense. We may get someone who is strong on national defense, but not so strong on one or more of those other issues. Hugh asked how many in the crowd had walked a precinct. Many had. He reminded the audience that "this is entertainment; the real impact can best be made by people willing to do the hard work of walking a precinct."

Hugh said he worries most about the threat from the Chinese, and he urged the crowd to read a book written by Jed Babbin on the Chinese threat. He said that the Chinese are very likely to make a move for Taiwan. Second would be the threat from Islamofacists. Third would be the Russians, who are seeing a resurgence of the KGB. Hugh, though, said we must remain allies with Russia in the war on Islamic terror, because the Russians face an Islamic threat in Chechnya. Hugh said he lies awake at night worrying about those threats, in the above-mentioned order, then falls asleep.

There were other issues that were important to the audience. For example, one person drew a huge applause when he said we could better spend elsewhere the nearly one and one-half billion dollars we give to prop up the enemies of the U.S. who seem to be in charge at the United Nations. Hugh agreed, but reminded the crowd to"keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer." Hugh seemed to think it would even be possible some day to make the United Nations actually become an effective force for good in the world!

One woman asked if it were possible to do anything any more that might be considered treasonous. Hugh said yes, unless you happen to be employed by either the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times. That got a huge roar from the crowd. Hugh urged the people in attendance to write to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and ask that the Justice Department find and prosecute the leaker(s) of our nation's secrets to those two financially struggling members of the old media. Why didn't Congress name the two newspapers in its recent resolution against revealing national secrets? Because the politicians are afraid of them! They either have something they do not want disclosed about themselves personally, or they have a family member who does, and they worry about the power of the vicious press to embarrass or destroy that person. How sad and scary is that?

It was clear that Mr. Hewitt was very popular with this group of Coloradans. In fact, he said his ratings are higher in Colorado than anywhere else his program is aired. He attributed that fact to the long time success of a Denver talk radio show hosted by Mike Rosen. He said that because of Rosen, Coloradans respond favorably to "smart" talk radio. One person asked Hugh if he would ever consider being a candidate for public office. Hugh said that if it were up to him he might, but that because of objections from "the fetching Mrs. Hewitt," and the fact that, like Newt Gingrich, he has a long record of publishing his opinions, he would not.

Serial Killer

140 I.Q., always respectful, polite and courteous, and Robert Charles Browne may have killed as many as 49 people, young women between the ages of 13 and 26. He had six wives, all still alive, and all petite, weighing between 95 and 125 pounds. Those are some of the highlights mentioned in a story by John C. Ensslin in today's Rocky Mountain News.

Another fact I found interesting is that Lou Smit, who is the man who arrested this killer, is also the same highly respected former homocide detective who continues to look for the killer of Jon Benet Ramsey. He believes Jon Benet's killer was an intruder.

Blacks and Hispanics Get Free Advice

Former Governor Dick Lamm is back in the news (today's Rocky Mountain News) in an article by Myung Oak Kim. Lamm's hair is now whitish/grey, with a matching beard, so he is no longer talking about elderly people having "a duty to die," in order to keep down health care costs, as he did in a 1984 speech. Now he is telling blacks and Hispanics they should be more like Jewish and Japanese Americans, so their kids will do better in school and be more economically successful. His remarks have evoked anger from some black and Hispanic persons contacted by the writer of the Rocky article, but Lamm is not surprised, because, as he modestly asserts, "All great truths begin as heresies." Lamm has written a book on the subject, and will profit, even if blacks and Hispanics don't. Isn't that the point? Even if Lamm's criticisms are valid, it is the individual black and Hispanic who must choose which road to take.

Andrea Yates Not Guilty: "Boomer Narcissism Knows No Bounds"

The brilliant columnist Mark Steyn reprises a column he wrote five years ago, just a few days after Mrs. Yates methodically murdered each of her five children, then phoned her husband to come home and have a look. Quoting Steyn: Five years on from this column, we now have a new verdict on Andrea Yates: "not guilty". Yes, she killed them, in the sense that they are dead at her hands. But no, she's not "guilty" of their deaths because she's "psychotic". Which means she's too ill to know enough not to kill her children but not too ill not to know how to find a legal strategy to get her out of jail. What a pathetic comment on the "justice" system. I can't wait for the first Islamist terrorist to try this defense. Read the whole thing!

As Dr. Helen Smith states in her blog post at www.drhelen.blogspot.com, My bet is she will be out within seven to nine years--wish her five children could have been so lucky.

Where are the Best Writers?

Almost any guy will tell you that the best writers in the old media are on the sports pages. A case in point is the superb column today in the Rocky Mountain News by Bernie Lincicome. Lincicome writes about phenomenal golfer Tiger Woods.

What if, instead of writing about sports, wonderful writers like Lincicome were the ones we were reading on the front pages, writing about national and international politics? Would more men become involved in the affairs of the nation that really matter?

Decline of Old Media Spreads to Colorado

The E.W.Scripps Co. announced yesterday that The Rocky Mountain News lost $8 million dollars in the first six months of 2006. The Rocky and The Denver Post "share profits" from the Denver Newspaper Agency, but the Post does not disclose their financial results. I don't know how much longer Denver will have the luxury of two competing daily papers. Hugh Hewitt has more on the loss of classified ad revenue for the "old" papers.

Saying What You Mean, and Meaning What You Say

One of my favorite bloggers, Dr.Sanity, has a post today in which she mentions the importance of parents saying what they mean and meaning what they say! I made the same point yesterday, and Dr. Sanity is making it additionally with regard to terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Well, if children are not given the limits they need, they become terrorists, too, maybe with a small t!

I also love Dr. Sanity's emphasis on the power of victimhood, and the need for the world not to buy into that manipulative technique. Children are experts in playing the victim, if parents allow it!

Parental Authority

A few months ago I wrote about our family's decision to put our house up for sale and look for more land with animals. We were unable to sell our house, but we actually reached a win-win solution (I had not wanted to move, especially to the prairie east of Denver). Now I get to stay in beautiful Golden, Colorado, and my wife has found a wonderful ranch fifteen minutes from our home. This ranch allows people to board all kinds of animals. We have bought two horses, and two cute goats are also in the fold. Our children work off the monthly boarding charges, and have been spending big chunks of their days at the ranch.

My wife, a very astute psychologist, has made an observation about parental authority in the ranch setting versus the non-ranch suburban setting. In the ranch setting, obedience is more likely to mean the difference between life and death. If we say, "Stay here," "Don't run" or "Stay next to me" and they choose to ignore the parental command, they could be run over by a tractor, two horses who are fighting over some grain, or a charging ram. If they mindlessly scream or yell, they are likely to spook the horses, with dangerous consequences. In the park in Golden, or at the mall, if we say, "It's time to go," there is no life and death issue, so the kids are more likely to ignore the statement, and the parents are less likely to demand obedience.

The whole concept of the necessity for someone to be in control is not really a construct we think about that much in our modern families. In fact, it is politically incorrect to think of control as a good thing! We do not discipline like we mean it. The result is that parents no longer say what they mean, or mean what they say, and children don't take very seriously the need to obey. Ask anyone who works in a school setting, and they will tell you that establishing control, especially with boys, is more and more difficult each year.

"Too Close To God?"

The Anchoress links to a story in the New York Times about embryonic stem cell research in which the cells were implanted into the brains of some patients who have Parkinson's Disease. The results were nightmarish. The chief researcher stated that there should be no more research done on humans. The Anchoress wonders if the embryos are just "too close to God," as the cells caused terrible uncontrolled twitching of various body parts. There is no date on the New York Times story. The Denver Post regularly carries articles from the New York Times, but somehow missed this one. But its July 21 editorial page did not fail to throw this in the face of President Bush when he came to Denver today.

More Clarification on Reagan Versus Bush

Fred Barnes has an editorial in today's Opinion Journal (I am sorry, I was unable to link to it) on how President Reagan's record is being distorted by those who want to make President Bush look bad. Unfortunately, some Republicans are falling for the distortions, as I have mentioned in an earlier post.

Reagan's greatest accomplishment was standing up to the Communists. His feelings about Communists were deeply personal. His dislike for them stemmed from the days in which he was President of the Screen Actors Guild. Communists were feverishly trying to infiltrate Hollywood. He experienced their evil first hand. He knew what they were about. Standing up to the Commies was just being true to his own experience.

Maybe that is why so many of us are able to stand up to today's "liberals." We have experienced first hand how they operate, how they distort the views of people who disagree with them, how they personally attack when they cannot persuade on the merits of the argument, how vicious they can be when they have power, and, most importantly, how the programs they advocate have been dismal failures. Mona Charen has written a great book detailing the importance of that last point. It is called "Do-Gooders: How Liberals Hurt Those They Claim To Help (And The Rest Of Us!)"

Victor Davis Hansen Answers My Question!

In my last post I asked why President Reagan deserves praise for his inaction when the U.S. Marines were slaughtered in Lebanon. Victor Davis Hansen has the answer: President Reagan does not deserve the praise he has been getting! Here is what Hansen has to say: "And when Americans are butchered, are we to skedaddle, as both Presidents Reagan and Clinton did, from Lebanon and Somalia respectively?

Our present muscular policy - and we also hear this all too infrequently - grew out of just such past bipartisan inaction that led to 3,000 murdered Americans. The truth is that the old way of doing business, rightly or wrongly, was seen by jihadists as encouragement to up the ante with Sept. 11." Dr. Hansen's full article can be found here.

Hezbollah and Other Terrorists

In recent days I have heard people I greatly respect, Hugh Hewitt, Sean Hannity, and Ed Morrisey, extol the virtues of Ronald Reagan regarding his dealings with terrorst groups. However, my memory of the 1983 suicide bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, is that Reagan did nothing. Can anyone explain to me why President Reagan should be remembered fondly for doing nothing, when over 200 U.S, Marines were murdered?

Intelligence, Memory, and Mental Health Epithets

Our adopted daughter, Sara Jane Agard, is now two and one-half. We were told that her birth mother was bi-polar, oppositional and defiant, severely retarded, schizophrenic, borderline personality disorder, and on and on and on. Because she was so defiant, the mental health professionals gave her every mental health diagnosis (epithet) that they could think of.

Sarah has been with us for all but the first sixteen days of her life. We have been told that she will be seriously delayed and have a severely low I.Q. We have seen none of that!

Let me give an example from today. A few weeks ago I bought her a bunch of books from the annual library sale. Because, unfortunately, there are not many blacks living in our county, many of the children's books on sale were books featuring black children. I bought seventeen such books. After the first read, my favorite book was Asana and the Animals, by Grace Nichols, with wonderful illustrations by Sarah Adams. I read it to Sarah a few weeks ago, along with the other sixteen books.

Today we read it for the second time. I got to the page where on the left side was the poem Grasshopper One. I started to read it, but Sarah started saying, "Don't Cry, Caterpillar!" that was the title of the poem on the right-hand side of the page! Even more startling to me was her comment later on in the book, when we were reading about elephants at the zoo. Again Sara interrupted me to say, "I want to read about the alligator!" Sure enough, I turned the page, where the next poem was entitled, Lying Still In Muddy River!

If Sara is severely retarded, what does that make me? I surely did not remember the Don't Cry Caterpillar story about a caterpillar who worries if she will still be herself when she has wings, and I did not remember that the alligator story followed the elephant story! We will just keep on loving Sara, and keep her as far away from the mental health professionals as we possibly can!

Forgiveness

Forgiveness seems to be an odd topic to write about this week. With all of the violence in the Middle East, forgiveness seems to be the farthest thing from anyone's mind. But Boinkie's Blog has a post that is one of the best I have ever seen on the topic.

Some of the topics she addresses are: Why forgive? So we can be "healed?" So we can get a "get out of jail free card?" To make ourselves "feel good and superior?" What is forgiveness? Does forgiveness equal "being a doormat?" Is forgiveness being passive-aggressive, "smiling and saying you forgive, while inside you hold a terrible anger?" Is forgiveness presented as a way for "the one harming to be free of blame?"

Thankfully, Boinke's Blog emphasizes the need "to correct the abuser." As she says, "A murderer may be forgiven because of Christ's love, but unless he lives his life in reparation, such forgiveness will be meaningless." I am glad that she also addresses the issue of "giving in to hatred," and what that leads to. For the answer to forgiveness, go here.

"Integrity and Courage Have Fled Washington"

Yesterday Ralph Peters wrote an oped in the New York Post that makes sense to me. Unfortunately, Washington is not the only place where integrity and courage have fled. We will only get leadership in Washington if Washington hears clear, unified messages from the rest of the country. When was the last time that happened?

Peters wrote that the rules of the battlefield should be clear: if you are in civilian clothes and you throw a grenade, detonate a bomb, or pull a trigger against our troops, you will be killed, not captured. Peters correctly points out that we will never win the hearts and minds of terrorists. Is there any doubt of the truth of that observation, after the recent episode in which terrorists beheaded and gouged the eyes out of two United States of America soldiers?

But, as Peters implied, political correctness rules the day in America, in Washington, in the dinosaur media, and even with some in our military. All of the restraints are placed against our brave soldiers, and none against the terrorist Islamic thugs. Things will change only when the American people let their politicians know that we want to win this war!

A Beautiful Eulogy

What a wonderful woman. What a beautiful love.

How to Rise to the Top of the Child Welfare Bureaucracy: Badmouth Foster Care!

The bureaucrats love to badmouth foster care. Roxanne White, who is the director of the Denver Department of Human Services is quoted in today's Rocky Mountain News saying, "The government doesn't do a very good job of raising kids." Now isn't that clever? One problem, though: it is not the goverment who is raising kids in foster care. It is foster families. And, we do a damn good job!

White then goes on to say that foster children grow up "deeply scarred," because "their ties to birth parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and teachers and ministers were permanently severed by the government." Hogwash! If there are scars, it is because of the abuse and neglect they suffered at the hands of those who were closest to them, before the system finally intervened to protect the child. And if there are more scars, it is because the system returned them to unsafe situations, to save foster care dollars and promote "family preservation," instead of child protection.

White wants to recruit foster families from neighborhoods where the children were living before they were removed from their homes. Nine months ago the program was initiated. Guess how many people in those neighborhoods have stepped forward ready to enter training? ZERO! And yet, Denver is considered to be in the forefront of a national movement to change the nation's foster care system. The key to the Denver program is to keep children in their neighborhoods. Have we forgotten the words of Martin Luther King, who asked us to "judge my children by the content of their character"? Character, not skin color, not neighborhood culture, is what matters most.

White is further quoted, "We always knew that if we took the children away, in the short term we could keep them safe, but in the long run, they were horribly unsafe!" Yes, because the system returned the children to unsafe situations and did no follow up! The system failed to follow the law and file for legal protection, asking courts to find children dependent and neglected. The system failed to make permanent plans for the children. The system failed to recruit adoptive families. The time these children spent in foster care was the time when they were safe!

What the article did not point out is that Colorado law specifies certain situations that require child protection agencies (Colorado's counties) to file for legal protection of children who meet the law's definition of dependence and neglect. The article did not say how many cases are being filed now, versus how many were filed before White took over as director. Is the Department ignoring the law? Who is letting them get by with this? Who is looking after the best interest of the child? Let's face it folks: foster families are convenient scapegoats for bureaucrats who want to hide the ugly truth of their failure to protect abused and neglected children.

Is She Eating Well?

Today I took our new foster baby in for a visit with her mom and grandma. It is obvious, as we had been told by the caseworker, mom is severely "developmentally disabled." Mom also has a big obesity problem. I mention that because, so does her baby! This eight-month-old child is wearing size three toddler clothes! Instead of being taught to self-soothe, she wants to be held all of the time, and is used to having food all of the time. Incredibly, the caseworker asks me, "Is she eating well?" Then the grandma informs me that her favorite food is Hawaiian Delight. Am I surprised that they give her mostly a high sugar content food? NO! Oh well, not to worry, the caseworker informs me that they have located a relative, and if she passes the criminal background check, the baby will be going there early next week.

Now the bureaucrats can be proud. They have found a relative who might pass a criminal background check! No one is making any plans for this baby's permanency. Yes, be kind to the mom and her family. But if they are not able to care for the baby without breaking her leg or cruelly forcing her to use food to soothe herself, then have the guts to recognize that truth and make plans for adopting this baby. There are so many families who want to adopt, but in order not to deal with the politically correct multicultural diversity liberals, they go all the way to Communist China to adopt a baby because that bureaucracy is easier to deal with!

Meanwhile, the bureaucrats will be sacrificing a child's future and saving taxpayer dollars on foster care. And their future within the bureaucracy will remain secure.
In fact, they will be held out by the liberal multicultural diversity crowd nationally as innovative and pioneers in reforming the foster care system. On the backs of children who need to be protected!

Meth, Babies, and Breast Implants

On May 18, 2006 I wrote a post here about one of our foster babies. The suspicion was that she was a meth baby. Today we learned that the baby's mom has admitted using meth. However, she says she has not used meth in the last four years, since she got her breast implants. They cost her $4000.00, and she can't afford to replace them right now. She has heard that meth does strange things to breast implants.

Mom Did It!

Tonight one of our former foster babies came back to us. She had first come to us at age two months in January with a broken leg. She was returned to an aunt after being with us for a few weeks. Now we are delighted to have her back. Colleen asked the caseworker, "What is the plan?" The answer shocked us. The plan is to return her to her mother, but not until some time in the fall, because the mom is five months pregnant, and they want to see how she does with the new baby! Colleen asked the caseworker if they ever figured out who broke the baby's leg. The answer? "Yes, mom did it! She was trying to put a shoe on the baby, and twisted her leg the wrong way." Yeah, sure.

Photoblogging in Denver

This morning Coloradans interested in securing America's borders have placed two billboards at strategic locations in downtown Denver. One features bayonets plunged into the earth with helmets on top, signifying departed veterans, and addresses the President, Governor, and Mayor, exclaiming, "They did not Die for Illegal Sanctuary!" The second one says "Welcome to Sanctuary City...Relax, You Made It!" It then cites the executive order signed by previous Mayor Wellington Webb, which allegedly made Denver a sanctuary city.

Is It Hard When They Leave?

Everyone who sees how bonded we are to the babies in our foster care always asks THE question: "Is it hard when they leave?" The answer, of course, is YES! But the bonding is what the babies need in order to be socialized human beings who can bond with people throughout their lifetimes. We love them as though they are our own and as though they are going to be with us throughout their childhoods. We know, however, that the odds are not very high that that will be the case. We can only hope that other persons involved with their cases will step forward and make sure the children are protected from further abuse and neglect.

Sand Castles in the Air

"It is one thing for people to build sand castles in the air, but it is quite another for them to live in them!" Those are the words a foster parent used to describe the unrealistic advice she was getting from the social worker assigned by the foster care agency to manage the case of the child who was placed in her home. Social workers, anxious to be accorded status in the community, may describe themselves as "clinicians," hoping that the public will somehow connect them with the unquestioned authority enjoyed by the medical profession. In fact, when it comes to foster parenting, the knowledge base of the social work professon sometimes is little more than sand castles in the air.

Foster parents are generally people who have had success raising their own children. Success meant having high expectations of their children, and the children living up to or surpassing those expectations. Social workers working in child abuse or neglect settings are often people who have never been parents. When they teach the foster parents how to become "therapeutic" foster parents, they often teach them not to do the things that made them successful with their own children! When the foster parent tries to discipline a child by holding him accountable for his deeds, the social worker says, "no, no, no,: try to understand the underlying reason why the child misbehaved! Help him to understand his feelings."

So Billy is angry that his mother has missed six visits in a row, and then she finally shows up as if nothing had happened. Billy then comes home and expresses his rage at this outrageous behavior of his mom by hitting the dog or biting a foster sibling. What he needs at that point is a CONSEQUENCE strong enough to make him think twice before hurting some animal or person the next time he feels angry!

The social worker, however, cautions the foster parent never to raise her voice in anger at a child. What if the foster child is hurting a baby? I'll answer that one for you. You say the name of the offending child, and then follow ugently with the word NO! or, STOP! You let the child know that you say what you mean, and mean what you say, and you do not plan to keep repeating yourself to someone who chooses to ignore or openly defy you. If he cannot handle the freedom, he will have to lose it for a while, and then earn it back.

While foster parents are supposed to lower their expectations of the child, the system may have incredibly low expectations of the child's birthparents. Basically all they have to do in many cases is show up for visits, not abuse the child during the visits, then show up for court.

If someone has a different point of view than the "clinical" social worker, the social worker may proceed to analyze free of charge why there must be something in the person's personal history that explains why they lack the wisdom of the all-knowing social worker. This condescending attitude is hated by foster parents, and especially by adolescent foster children. We had a twelve-year-old girl, who was placed in our home after her mother died from overdosing on illegal drugs and alcohol. After she had been with us for a while, I asked the child what her experience had been with social workers, since she had been in seven different foster homes while waiting for the system to decide on her future. Her answer? "Caseworkers just mess with my life. They are unwanted strangers barging into my life. I don't like any of them. None of them really took the time to get to know me." This sad statement came from a child who was truly worth getting to know. Fortunately, a wonderful, dependable family with a solid rural American lifestyle, came forth, made several visits to our house, and adopted this young lady.

Hard Realities

This week we heard from a mom, who along with her husband, is adopting a child who lived with us in foster care for one year. For confidentiality purposes, we'll call him Billy. His new mom sent us pictures, and told us that the adoption process is close to being concluded. This is wonderful news. His new parents are wonderful. The dad is a military recruiter and chef. The mom is a computer whiz, who stays at home with Billy during the day. They are mature adults with conservative beliefs and values. They are just exactly what Billy needs.

Billy is a charming, good-looking three-and-one-half-year-old. He was eighteen months old when he came to live with us. He had been raising himself. His mother was a teenager who worked at a fast food restaurant. The police found him hanging out at a convenience store with his brother, who was two years older than Billy. Billy knew a lot about violence. When he got in a fight, he fought to kill, and used whatever weapon he could. His favorite weapon was his teeth.

Billy misinterpreted kindness as weakness. Billy received the most kindness from my wife Colleen and my son Jon, who was then four-years-old. Yet, Jon was most often the target of Billy's biting, and Colleen was the target of Billy's sand-in-the-face throws and most vociferous temper tantrums. Once a neglected child gets a whiff of what it is like to be nurtured, he may want that nurturing non-stop. The foster parent must then teach the child that in the real world people over the age of eighteen months do not get nurtured non-stop! The fact that he did not get that nurturing as an infant does not change that reality.

The children foster parents take into their homes are in many ways similar to the foster parents own children. Some are physically very attractive, as is Billy, and to the untrained eye may seem to be "adorable." But, because of their unique experiences being neglected and/or abused, they will bring with them some behaviors that the foster parents never saw in their own children. Add that to the fact that the bond is not the same as the bond they have with their own biological children, and you may have a situation that can test the patience of the best foster parents.

ABANDONMENT
Foster parents may get to reap what is sown by birthparents: the child's deep-seated anger and resentment that his needs were not taken care of in those crucial first eighteen months. As frightening as it is to see the depth of rage the child may exhibit, it is equally heartbreaking and sad. After missing five straight weeks of scheduled visits with Billy, his biological mother finally showed up for a visit with Billy and his older brother, whom we shall call Jed. Jed had always rejected Billy. They were placed in two different foster homes because of their extreme history of violence with each other.

Jed's foster mother, a single woman aged 63, was a former civil rights attorney, and tough as nails. She was terrific at the core job of a foster parent who has a child like Jed: civilizing him! She made him give Billy a kiss, while we all waited in the waiting room for the biological mom, who was late. When the mom comes into the visiting room waiting area, Jed's foster mom encouraged him to go give his mom a hug.

After the visit I encouraged Billy to give his mom one more hug, which he did, but then showed no sorrow at leaving her, because he now had parents who were there for him every hour of every day. When we arrived home after the visit, he saw our truck and got excited, because Colleen is usually driving it, and that meant that she was probably home. He runs to her and holds out his arms for her to pick him up. He exclaims, "Mama!" Colleen has successfully created a bond, not to mention the fact that this child who came to us speaking no words is now speaking words with a flourish.

When Billy first came to us, he would go to anyone, from teen girls to adult women, but was always very frightened of men. The man with whom his biologiccal mother was living had a record for violent crimes, and we can only guess what kinds of violence Billy was exposed to when he lived with his mom. He bonded much more rapidly with Colleen than he did with me. When he first came to us I had to be very protective of my own children, whom Billy was biting several times a day. Colleen was often working outside the home. I had many stern face-to-face talks with Billy about "NO BITING!" He kept his distance from me the first few weeks. Soon, though, he learned that he could get his nurturing from us, and he no longer looked for it from strangers.

Nevertheless, the next week after the visit revealed the depth of Billy's anger. He kicked and bit other children, and spit at Colleen (transferring the anger he felt toward his own mom). He picked up objects and hit other objects as hard as he could. He headed toward other people with the weapons in his hands. No doubt about it: if he had the right weapon and the right strength, he would have been homocidal. Each time he abused someone, he earned a time out; throughout which he screamed bloody murder.

We will never forget the looks on the face of another child, a six-year-old girl we shall call Ginny, each time we took her to a visit, waited the required fifteen minutes, and then were told by the visitation supervisor that there would be no visit because Ginny's mother did not show up or call. The mother, still mired in her substance abuse addictions, loved Ginny, but not nearly so much as she loved her own narcissistic image in the mirror. Ginny's father loved her, too, but the mother had bad-mouthed him to the naive caseworker, so instead of immediately pursuing the father as an option for Ginny, the initial months of casework focus were to reunify Ginny with a mother still in the throes of alcoholism. Meanwhile Ginny got her hopes up time and again, and time and again the mother thought only of herself and her booze.

They don't teach caseworkers about these crushing realities faced by abused and neglected children. The graduate schools of social work are dominated by left-wing faculty members who hold views idealizing the "poor," and making endless excuses for irresponsible behavior. Feminism is also rampant on these faculties, so it rarely seems to occur to these social workers who graduate from these schools that a father may be an appropriate choice to parent his child. Ginny eventually was placed with her father, who had been calling us long distance from the East coast regularly to talk to his daughter. We hammered the point home to the caseworker, who finally woke up.

If the system does not intervene and truly protect a child in the crucial first twelve to eighteen months of the child's life, the child is likely to have had many reinforcing experiences teaching her that her adult caretakers cannot be trusted. The more of those experiences that pile up in her life, the more difficult it will be for the child to learn to trust an adult who really is there to care for the child. She may decide she must fend for herself, thereby becoming perhaps increasingly manipulative and narcissistic, putting herself above all others at all times. This can lead to her seeing other people as objects to be manipulated, rather than as fellow humans with whom she can interact, learn from, and appreciate.

In the Best Interest of the Child, or Move the Case Along and Return the Baby to a Parent to Avoid Hassles and Complications?

Today we took our foster baby to the doctor. The doctor suspects shaken baby syndrome or meth use during pregnancy. He ordered a complete neurological workup at Childrens Hospital in Denver, a place where they do have expertise in diagnosing child abuse and neglect. We had previously gotten orders for the baby to get physical therapy weekly and occupational therapy twice a week in our home. When we told the caseworker about these professionals coming to help the baby in our home, she made absolutely no response whatsoever. It will be interesting to see how she responds to this latest development. My guess is she will show no interest.

Looking Out for Number One

Just as the main function of a bureaucracy is to perpetuate itself permanently, so the main function of the bureaucrat is to cover his ass in such a way as to keep or improve his position in the bureaucracy. One who is trying to protect children must always keep those truths in mind.

Protecting Children, or Pretending to Protect Children?

After a career as a child protection social worker, I have been doing foster care with my wife for the last three years. We have taken in children of all ages, but in the last year we have specialized in babies. We made that choice because we found that our own six children are not threatened so much by babies as they are of children closer in age to themselves. Also because we like to adopt, so we take children who someone in the system believes will become available for adoption, because it appears that the parental rights are headed for termination.

We currently have a precious little girl who is now 6 and one-half months. She has been with us for two and one-half months. Her mother is an exotic dancer with additional experience in the cooking of crystal meth. Her father is a man with a long criminal history. She was removed from the home after her father was arrested for domestic violence and her mother received a broken nose from the baby's macho dad.

After going through the intake process, which invoved several caseworkers, she was assigned to an "on-going" caseworker. That caseworker and the lawyer (Guardian ad Litem) appointed to make sure that the case served the best interests of the child, actually took their charge seriously. They were determined to see changes in mom along the lines of sobriety and an ability to provide safe living conditions for her daughter. Likewise, they were determined that the father would show evidence of learning that beating the crap out of mom was a stupid way to show his manhood.

Suddenly, the caseworker quit and decided to go home and take care of her own babies.
A different caseworker received many of her cases, plus some from another worker who had quit. Gone was the determination to protect the innocent baby. The new worker appears to be a go along and get along type person. A caseworker who truly insists on protecting children faces many obstacles and conflicts. The way to advance in the system is not to make many waves. The system is not about protecting children. The system is about pretending to protect children, while making sure that not too much money is spent on protecting the child and providing needed services to the child to bring her up to where she needs to be developmentally.

So now we have a foster family, each of whose eight members adores and is bonded to the baby, a baby who is wonderfully bonded to each member of the foster family, and a Guardian ad Litem, who we hope is still committed to protecting this baby. We shall see what we shall see.

Finding the Kingdom of Heaven

My wife Colleen told our children that God wants us to search for the Kingdom of Heaven. Colleen asked our youngest child, two-year-old Sara Jane, if she has been looking for the Kingdom of Heaven. Sara said she knew where it is. "It's in the back yard Mama."

Does God Have a Wife? Why Does He Live up in Heaven?

Four-year-old Greg wanted to know more about God again this morning. Greg thinks about God a lot. "Does God have a wife?" "If God was here on earth, could He see Heaven?" "Why does God live up in Heaven?" "Does God know everything?" "Is Satan God's worst enemy?" Even though I rarely have an answer for Greg, it is a joy to be with him and see how his mind is constantly working to figure out life's mysteries.

Faith and the Easter Bunny

Six-year-old Jon asked his mother this morning, "What time did the Easter Bunny come last night?" "I don't know, I must have been asleep," was the reply. "Then, how do you know he came?" "Because he has come every year since I was a little girl, and I just have faith that he will come every year on Easter." With that explanation apparently satisfying his curiousity, the questioner was ready to begin his egg-hunting quest.

Political Discussion in Public School Classrooms

I cannot believe reports that people like David Horowitz and John Andrews would want to write legislation banning political discussions in classrooms. I think that students should be encouraged to learn all points of view on current events and political hot topics. I would personally love to be such a teacher. The answer to the Ward Churchills and Jay Bennishes is not to ban their points of view, but to encourage students to form their own opinions by being challenged to do independent research, share ideas with each other, and then develop and defend their positions with facts. The teacher would also have the important responsibility of creating a safe environment in which students would realize that they could raise their questions and state their views without fear of being ostracized or mocked.

Moving?

We currently have our house up for sale, and are looking at properties that will allow a little more elbow room for our family.

Today my four-year-old son informed me that he does not want to move. Moreover, he has thought about what he will do if we persist in our plans. "I am going to live down the street here in Golden," he calmly informed me. I asked, "With whom are you going to live?" He answered, "I am going to buy a house and get some kids." I asked, "How are you going to get some kids?" "The mom of the house is going to get the babies out of her tummy, and then they will get older and they will be kids."

The Gospel According to My Four-Year-Old

Today I walked past my four-year-old son Greg, when I overheard him say, "Hello, God?" I slowed my pace to hear how the conversation would go. Greg informed God, "I have killed some bad guys. Can you come down and get them and take them up to Heaven?" God apparently answered this prayer, because that was the end of the conversation.

Can You Say Dhimmitude?

Kudos to the Rocky Mountain News for reprinting one of the Danish cartoons. Diana West has an op-ed in yesterday's Washington Times explaining the meaning of the word Dhimmitude. The way things are going, many more people around the world are going to have to get used to spelling and pronouncing this word, which is actually not a new word at all.

Who is Meanspirited, the Columnist or the Candidate?

Today Rocky Mountain News Columnist Mike Littwin writes about spending some time traveling with undeclared presidential candidate Tom Tancredo on Tancredo's RV called "Secure America Now". Littwin is one of the most virulent ridiculers of Tancredo's anti illegal immigration campaign. On the trip Tancredo shares with Littwin very personal truths about his childhood. Tom does not have access in his memory to many happy moments from his childhood. His father was an alcoholic who was apparently quite mean at times.

Littwin gleefully now has his story. He thinks he has Tancredo all figured out. "Wall off the problem. Keep down the demons. Shout down those who have no voice. If you do get heard, then you are surprised. Maybe if you believed someone was going to pay attention, you might have thought harder about what it was you were going to say."

Littwin should heed his own words. Though he tries to portray Tancredo as meanspirited, it is he who is the meanspirited one. As Tancredo's mother lies dying in a hospice in Colorado, he shares deeply personal emotions with Littwin, who then misuses those very personal confidences to attack this very gracious man who sincerely wants to secure the boundaries of America, a country he dearly loves. You just do not get any lower than Littwin.

"President Ford" Does Not Want a Litmus Test

I just listened to Senator Arlen Spector ramble on about why he is supporting the nomination of Judge Alito. He stated that in the presidential campaign Senator Kerry said that if he were to be elected, he would appoint a pro choice person to the Supreme Court, while "President Ford" said he would require no litmus test. Will someone please wake up Senator Spector and tell him that George W. Bush, not Gerald Ford, is President of the United States?

Should Protecting America From Terrorists Be a Priority for Our Elected Leaders?

There is a column in the January 3, 2006 Rocky Mountain News by University of Colorado law professor Paul Campos that ridicules political leaders who advocate for making our nation's security a top priority. Campos says such political leaders "tremble before the threat of terrorism." This, of course, is the kind of thinking that prevailed in the Clinton White House, and directly led to the attacks on our country throughout the world in the 1990s and in America on September 11, 2001. Terrorists attack when and where they sense weakness. If our law students at the University of Colorado are buying Campos' absurd, mocking attempt at logic, we really do have reason to be fearful for our nation's future!
