We better address the educational environment for girls and boys before the achievement gap becomes a chasm

In Time Magazine Christina Hoff Sommers writes that

In the name of zero tolerance, our schools are becoming hostile environments for young boys.

My sons Jon and Greg would certainly agree, and so would my stepsons Thomas and Erik. Thomas and Erik both decided not to pursue college degrees. Both have developed successful starts in businesses that do not require college degrees. Jon is in the eighth grade. He started his school day today playing football, including tackling without protective pads. His favorite quote is this from Einstein:

The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.
Jon told me tonight, "I crave creative knowledge: water; not intelligence: Koolaid." Greg's mom gave him a keyboard for his birthday. He learns songs by ear. Tonight he played Beethoven for me. Awesome!

Sommers writes,

Boys are nearly five times more likely to be expelled from preschool than girls. In grades K-12, boys account for nearly 70% of suspensions, often for minor acts of insubordination and defiance.
However, it does not have to be an act of defiance. Sommers gives examples of boys who were suspended just for doing things boys do.

Here she is in a powerful video.
