Freedom Drives A Car

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is being remembered in many ways this week. Sasha Volokh remembers him in a different context. When blacks were boycotting the Montgomery, Alabama bus system in 1955, they used private automobiles to help people get where they needed to go. 325 cars were used to pick people up at 42 sites around town. Police harassed drivers, stopping Dr. King about 30 times for going 30 in a 25 mph zone. Private automobiles remain vital, especially to families and the elderly today.
