Ban Bossy?

Have you heard of the campaign to ban the word bossy? The CEO of Facebook and the Girl Scouts of America are campaigning to ban the word. Google is supporting the effort, along with the Chairperson of the Democratic Party.

There is a difference between being bossy and a leader. I am a girl and I was bossy. And with the right people helping me it became assertive versus aggressive and I turned out just fine. I don't think the issue is the word... it is how girls vs boys are taught even within their own peers.

vw bug,
Can you elaborate on what you mean by how girls v. boys are taught? Thanks for commenting!

Little slow on the uptake here... When I volunteer at the boy's schools (Elementary), I get to see first hand how certain things are handled. When a girl is bossy, other girls will do one of two things, 1. join up together and talk to her about it or 2. listen to her. When a boy is boyss, the boys will do a couple of things, 1. Tease him, 2. Listen to him, 3. Get bossy back. Even with the teachers or adults, the girls are usually told quietly to stop being that way, where as the boys are told to 'quiet down'. Why? Mainly because a bossy girl is not necessarily loud, where a young boy who is bossy usually is loud. Not sure why but I have watched it happen multiple times. Since this is a comment and not my blog... I'll stop here. I'll have to start writing this up for a future post though. Thanks for the thought provoking post.
