The hostage-taker got hungry and asked the police to bring him some breakfast. Sure, we'll bring you breakfast; what would you like, steak and eggs? How about some bacon on the side?
Police detonated an explosion which blew off the front door, then charged in and rescued the boy pictured above, then shot the hostage-taker dead, ending an eighteen hour standoff. He had been on the run from parole.
Gurman writes,
Arvada police said the suspect and the hostage did not know one another. Police initially were summoned on a domestic violence call after an argument between the hostage taker and his girlfriend, Chief Wick said. As police approached, the man fled into a nearby house, where he took the 13-year-old hostage.
The hostage-taker was identified by his sister as Don Pooley, 34. He had convictions dating back to 1997 for aggravated vehicular theft, possession of marijuana, escape, possession of drug paraphernalia, forgery, vehicular eluding, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and smuggling contraband in prison, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.
Pooley was one of 722 parole absconders currently on the loose.
