Race Relations

(My son, Jon Agard, age thirteen, wrote this last week to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.)

America has changed. It has changed in many ways. Unity between human beings, is, for the most part, happening in America. But, we are not finished. Racism and bigotry and hate cannot be exterminated like a pack of rats.

The haters and racists of old will, for the most part, cower and realize their sins. The prejudiced white will welcome the black man into his house yet again, but not as a slave. Not to be stared at like an alien or monster, but to laugh with, talk to, and be enjoyed.

That is the dream, but that is not always the case. Peace will never truly happen because humans don't give up easily, even if it now appears that relations are the opposite of what happened in the past.
