A Salute To Dick Cheney

The main reason I voted for the Bush/Cheney ticket twice was the Cheney half of the ticket. Dick Cheney is just so solid. Then, when you compare him with the shallow John Edwards on the other ticket, it was a no-brainer. Of course, the obnoxious bully Al Gore and the haughty John Kerry made George W. Bush seem like the obvious choice, too.

I knew we could sleep soundly knowing Dick Cheney was helping to man the fort. He also understood that government needs to "get out of the way" of private entrepreneurs who are the heart of our economy. I love how Cheney recently stood up for Rush Limbaugh when Colin Powell, who voted for Barack Obama, tried to attack Rush's credibility with Republican voters.

You comment that Cheney “understood that government needs to "get out of the way" of private entrepreneurs who are the heart of our economy” unfortunately, does not comport with reality. Under Bush/Cheney there was a massive increase in Medicare, with the prescription drug program that imposed significant costs on the private economy. Bush/Cheney passed Sarbanes Oxley, a massively intrusive securities regulation that cost publicly traded companies $4-5 million dollars per year. Sarbanes Oxley has crippled the start-up community. Bush/Cheney presided over and encouraged crippling changes in our patent laws that make it easier to be a technology adopter (thief) than a technology creator. The FASB rules on stock options changed under Bush/Cheney. These rules make it difficult for start-up companies to use stock options to lure away talent from secure jobs at big companies. Finally, federal spending and debt increased to absurd levels under Bush/Cheney. While the Obama administration is trying to put Bush/Cheney to shame in how quickly they ruin our economy, Bush/Cheney have nothing to brag about.

Couldn't agree with you more, Bob. Cheney is solid and our enemies feared him, as they should have. He had many outstanding qualities as a VP AND Dale Halling, above, has a few good points. Bush/Cheney should have used their veto pen more and not allowed the dollar to sink so low (an effective tax hike).

ACtually Cheney did NOT agree with those measures and said so, but he was above all aware that he was second fiddle on the ticket and when the president made his choice he then worked to make it happen the best way it could. And besides let's put the real blame on Congress. They did it, not Bush/Cheney.
