On Twitter tonight

Rudy Giuliani tweeted,
Gov. Cuomo blames President #Trump for the crime epidemic in NY.

A BIG LIE!

His No Bail Laws that release thousands of criminals and his fear of removing a pro-criminal, anti-police Mayor are the reasons for the crime epidemic.

Michael Knowles tweeted,
Probably not a great idea to have the gal blaming Trump for her father’s death go on immediately after Andrew Cuomo, whose policies are directly responsible for killing thousands of elderly New Yorkers in nursing homes.

Dr. David Samadi tweeted,
Governor Cuomo just called New York’s response to COVID-19 “beautiful”.

Did he consult with the families of those who passed away in nursing homes?

Looking forward and backward

Victor Davis Hanson writes in part in American Greatness,
...I would prefer a supposed braggart cracking down on China, or a purported narcissist closing the border, or an alleged demagogue promising change in the Rust Belt than any more sermons from privileged gentlemen conservatives that tolerating illegal immigration “is an act of love,” or silent agreement that those manufacturing “jobs are not coming back” as Obama put it, or wonkishly boy wonder Paul Ryan being drilled in a debate by the vacuous smiling Joker Joe Biden or Mitt Romney oblivious that Candy Crowley had just hijacked his debate momentum—and with it the election.

...But all this is irrelevant when we consider what Trump did rather than what he said.

I mean not just that action matters more than rhetoric, but rather to evaluate Trump by the general past standards of presidential comportment rather than through Platonic ideals. Trump is less randy and gross in office than were reckless and sexually cruel but now revered icons like John F. Kennedy or Bill Clinton. He has not weaponized the federal government for political advantage in the manner of Barack Obama (who may go down soon as the most corrupt president since Warren G. Harding).

...Trump, of “Crooked Hillary,” “lock her up,” and “Sleepy Joe” infamy, was more likely to react concretely to the plight of the inner city and the economic aspirations of minorities and the white working-class, who were not just crushed by globalization but so often ignored by their supposed champions of both parties.

...From early 2017, Trump pushed three general themes to reawaken an inert economy that only sluggishly had survived the 2008 financial panic.

One, was to deregulate, recalibrate tax incentives, and create an entirely new psychological climate that would encourage capitalists to invest, spend, and expand, rather than retreat, ride out, and hoard. The point was to go out, get busy, build, profit and not fear talk of “you didn’t build that” and “at some point you’ve made enough money” as warning shots across their bow. We forget that psychology is a great part of economic growth. After 2017, trillions of dollars reentered the U.S. economy that had been hoarded, protected, and sequestered since 2009.

Second, Trump hectored corporations, foreign and domestic, to relocate into the U.S. heartland, given that U.S. workers, energy costs and supplies, security, and the business climate were in truth more frequently competitive than abroad.

Third, Trump at least sought trade equilibrium with those nations, friends, foes, and neutrals—China, Japan, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, and Canada—who ran up huge trade surpluses, a fact in the past that was contextualized as either irrelevant or unalterable.

...The United States is energy independent of the Middle East, as is Israel—because of the expansion of fracking and horizontal drilling that a Biden-Harris Administration claims would cease upon assuming office.

...Trump’s signature foreign policy achievement is a complete recalibration of policy toward China—one deeply resented by the legions of Wall Street investors, corporate interests, celebrities, athletes, foundations, universities, and media, all deeply leveraged by Chinese lucre.

...For all the hoax of “Russian collusion,” Vladimir Putin is in terrible shape and has not fooled the administration as he did with “reset” in the Obama years. In the last four years, the United States upped sanctions on Russia, crashed the world export market of natural gas and oil so dear to Moscow, beefed up NATO spending, hectored Germany about its new energy dependence on Putin, increased U.S. military capability, reached out to frontline Eastern Europe, left an asymmetrical missile deal with Russia, obliterated Russian mercenaries in Syria, sold lethal weapons to Ukraine—even as the likes of James Clapper, John Brennan, James Comey, and an array of retired generals sermonized that Trump was a Russian “asset.” Translated that means the president who contained Putin they loathed, and the Obama presidency that empowered him they idolized.

...For Trump’s critics he did more psychological damage by his often coarse rhetoric than the material good he achieved with undeniable breakthroughs. For that exegesis to be persuasive, however, they would have to make the argument that the mellifluous citizen-of-the-world rhetoric of the Obama Administration far outweighed in importance the serial setbacks it caused to U.S. interests and security. Or perhaps, one could explain how, prior to 2017, China had weaponized the Spratly Islands, North Korea apparently had nuclear-tipped missiles pointed at the U.S. West Coast, Iran was bragging about a new Shiite crescent, and Russia felt free to invade eastern Ukraine, absorb Crimea, and habitually since 2014 interfere in U.S. elections with impunity.

...He is a defender of the police while acknowledging the need for greater oversight, and opposed both violence in the streets, and the appeasement of it by blue state governors and mayors. In some sense, there are no conservatives, either by temperament or by political ability, eager to stop the summer madness of statue toppling, arson, spiraling crime, shakedowns, cancel culture and the vows of Antifa and BLM that all this is the beginning of a complete rewriting of American history and a radical recalibration of our shared futures.

...There was the first impeachment effort, the Beltway punditry in early 2017 calling for his removal by coup if necessary, the voting machine suits, the Clinton-Obama-Steele subversion of the Trump campaign and transition, the Hollywood assassination chic, the effort to take out former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, the farce of the 25th Amendment that included the bathos of high federal officials contemplating wearing wires in private conservations with the president to the psychodrama of Professor Bandy Lee testifying before Congress about Trump’s mental state, the silly Emolument Clause gambit (Trump has lost over $1 billion while in office and taking no salary), the subversion of the FISA courts, the Russian hoax, Robert Mueller’s two-year long and $35 million witch hunt, the fabricated Steele dossier implanted in the bowels of the Obama government and media, the one-phone-call impeachment circus, the revolt of the retired generals, and what has rightly lately been called “coup porn,” the hysteria over Ukraine and the caricaturing of Trump in 2020 as Typhoid Mary, Herbert Hoover, and Bull Connor as the Left weaponized the contagion, quarantine, and rioting.

...But Americans at some point empathize with an underdog fighter on behalf of what they fear may be a fading America, even someone they are not always fond of, but who does not give up when bullied and subjected to a level of unwarranted abuse that they themselves know they could never endure. The Left never wished to beat Trump at the polls (indeed they feared such an ordeal); they instead wanted to destroy his person, his family, and everyone who followed him.

That Trump withstood such illegal, unconstitutional, and unethical venom also says something about those who dished it out—and, in the end, did so viciously and yet so impotently.

Biden and Harris

In jns.org, Carolyn Glick writes about the v.p. candidacy of Kamala Harris.
While the progressive media refers to Harris as a “moderate,” since her election to the Senate in 2016 Harris has racked up one of the most radical voting records in the upper house. She supports revoking all limitations on abortions. She supports harsh limitations on the right to bear arms. She supports banning oil fracking and ending energy exploration on federal lands.

While popular with the Democrat base in California and other deep-blue states, Harris’ extreme positions render her incapable of winning votes in places like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. Indeed, she is likely to be more of a drain than an asset to Biden’s bid to win over these critical states.

So why did Biden choose her for his running mate?

In two words: Identity politics.

While progressives are more likely to be atheists than conservatives, they are religiously political. And one of the things they sanctify is identity politics. Recognizing this, Biden chose Harris not because of the votes she can bring, but for the support she can garner from the Democratic base. In other words, Biden chose her because she is a woman rather than a man and because as the daughter of a father who immigrated to America from Jamaica and a mother who immigrated from India, Harris is not white.

Biden himself doesn’t sanctify identity politics. On the contrary—some of Biden’s statements on the campaign trail have been arguably racist. In the past week alone, Biden committed two racial gaffes. He asked a black journalist if he was a junkie and he said that “with notable exceptions” all black people think the same way.

Biden is probably not a racist and he certainly isn’t an ideologue. The only thing that Biden is most assuredly is a weather vane. For more than 40 years Biden has consistently adapted his “convictions” to the prevailing winds in his party. When the party was opposed to abortion, Biden was an anti-abortion Catholic. Now that his party supports unlimited abortion on demand, Biden does too.

Back in the day, Biden opposed illegal immigration. Now that the Democrat Party has embraced open borders, Biden supports giving illegal immigrants free healthcare and schooling.

Electric Trump 2020 yard signs!

Trump's most recent foreign affairs accomplishments

In American Greatness, Roger Kimball writes about Trump's recent achievement in the Middle East.
Naturally, Joe Biden claimed that it was the product of many administrations, including the Obama-Biden Administration, but no sane person believes that, only Democrats. What the Obama-Biden Administration did was shovel some $150 billion to Iran for a “deal” in support of that tyrannical theocratic regime which in turn sponsored the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah.

...Yet another accomplishment that in any sane world would increase President Trump’s chances of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize came on Friday with the announcement that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had just signed an agreement to send more U.S. troops to Poland and otherwise enhance relations between the two countries.

Again the contrast between the Trump Administration and the Obama-Biden Administration is telling. As Rebeccah Heinrichs tweeted, “Obama/Biden yanked plans for missile defense from Poland on 70th anniversary of Soviet invasion. Today Trump admin inks major defense agrmt with Poland on 100th anniversary of Poles stopping Soviet invasion, saving Europe from communism.”

So many people are moving out of New York City, L.A., San Francisco, and Chicago. But will they take their politics with them?

Rod Dreher writes in The American Mind,
The writer James Altucher, a native New Yorker who owns a business in New York, believes that New York is over –– and explains at length why. Here’s the key factor:

In 2008, average bandwidth speeds were 3 megabits per second. That’s not enough for a Zoom meeting with reliable video quality. Now, it’s over 20 megabits per second. That’s more than enough for high quality video.

There’s a before and after. BEFORE: no remote work. AFTER: everyone can remote work.

The difference: bandwidth got faster. And that’s basically it. People have left New York City and have moved completely into virtual worlds. The Time Life building doesn’t need to fill up again. Wall Street can now stretch across every street instead of just being one building in Manhattan.

We are officially AB: “After Bandwidth”. And for the entire history of NYC (the world) until now we were BB: Before Bandwidth.

Remote learning, remote meetings, remote offices, remote performance, remote everything.

That’s what is different.

Everyone has spent the past five months adapting to a new lifestyle. Nobody wants to fly across the country for a two hour meeting when you can do it just as well on Zoom. I can go see “live comedy” on Zoom. I can take classes from the best teachers in the world for almost free online as opposed to paying $70,000 a year for a limited number of teachers who may or may not be good.

Everyone has choices now. You can live in the music capital of Nashville, you can live in the “next Silicon Valley” of Austin. You can live in your hometown in the middle of wherever. And you can be just as productive, make the same salary, have higher quality of life with a cheaper cost to live.

G) And what would make you come back?

There won’t be business opportunities for years. Businesses move on. People move on. It will be cheaper for businesses to function more remotely and bandwidth is only getting faster.

Antifa and Black Lives Matter do nothing for the working class or black people

In Epoch Times, Roger L. Simon writes,
For those who have had an, alas, typical American education and are unfamiliar with Kristallnacht (“Crystal Night”) when Hitler’s paramilitary “Sturmabteilung” (SA), literally Storm Detachment, broke a lot more than windows on Nov. 9-10, 1938. Here’s just a few words of description from Wikipedia:

“Jewish homes, hospitals and schools were ransacked as attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers. Rioters destroyed 267 synagogues throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed, and 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps.”

...America has been in its own version of Crystal Night for many months now from broken windows to looting to destruction of myriad stores and other places of business, police stations, and government edifices, not to mention considerable physical harm to persons.

Although not yet of Nazi (i.e., National Socialist) proportions, it’s pretty bad and doesn’t seem to be getting better.

For the most part, nothing is being done about it, especially on the state and municipal levels. As in Nazi Germany, it is unchecked.

...These German people too thought of themselves as “progressive,” just as Antifa and Black Lives Matter claim to be. More exactly, they claim to be Marxists, at least the BLM leadership does. Antifa answers to anarchist… or something.

In reality, they are the two most reactionary groups to have appeared in this country in some time, what Orwell would have called “objectively pro-fascist.” They do nothing for the working class (ironically, that’s the police; they’re the real working class) or black people.

They ruin the lives of both, aided and abetted by the media and “progressive” elected officials who are among the most cowardly men and women in our country, refusing to support the basic safety of their citizens.

A brief discussion of #QAnon

I keep seeing references to #QAnon, but don't know much about it.

"It was a debate!"

A commenter from India wrote to Ann Althouse:
Nagarajan Sivakumar said...
Prof Althouse,
There are far worse things about Kamala Devi Harris than her fake smile and fake explanations to a partisan hack and alleged comedian.

How many times has this woman opened up on television about her Brahmin mother who is the single biggest reason for her successful life in the States today? Every one knows her fathers name Harris..but how many people know about her mother Shyamala Gopalan ?

Her mother was a true trail blazer. She was one of the earliest Indians who came to America on a student visa in 1957. This was a full 8 years before the US opened up legally in 1965 via the Immigration and Naturalization Act to non Caucasian immigration of any kind.Upto that point there seems to have been a quota system for legal immigration which generally preferred European or Canadian immigration.

An unmarried Brahmin woman relocating from India to a country as foreign as the United States more than 6 decades ago was unheard of.It simply never happened. But Shyamala Gopalan was made of sterner stuff and graduated with a Phd in nutrition and endocrinology from Berkley in 1965.She later on went into breast cancer reasearch and worked at Urbana Champaign and at the University of Wisconsin. I am pretty sure that liberal students in your campus would go nuts if they knew about this connection.

Donald Harris divorced Shyamala Gopalan in 1971.Her mother basically raised Kamala and her sister Maya as a single parent from the time they were in elementary school. She is the very epitome of what liberal feminists hail as the true heroines of America..the successful career woman/single parent who raised a family all by herself..an immigrant and breast cancer researcher who was an advisor to the NIH..

And yet...people barely know who she is.Even though Kamala has been in the political spotlight for more than a decade now.. Even today Harris is the name she goes by. Shyamala Gopalan is virtually unknown.

When she self identfies as a black woman, she cannot talk about her Brahmin mother..or deal with the fact that her mother came from a politically well connected family from India..Her grandfather PV Gopalan worked for the Indian Govt in the 60s.He was posted in Zambia by the Government which tried to engage Africa seriously as a leader of the Non Aligned Movement

Her mother was truly privileged to be able to pursue academic goals in the United States 6 decades ago, when 90% of the rest of India could barely afford three meals a day or a train ticket let alone airfare to the richest country halfway across the world

Given this background, Her sob story about being an underprivileged child that was bused to school to combat evil white racists..crashes and burns.

Kamala Harris is a clone of her mother when it comes to ambition and the drive to make it big in life.Unfortunately she greatly differs from her mother in actually being useful to humanity. Heres hoping that she doesn't cause any further harm to anyone than what she's already done.

Full disclosure: I lived in the US for 10 years and am now back home in India. Iam about 8 kms from where her Chitthi (Tamil for maternal aunt) lives in Chennai ..the hometown of Shyamala Gopalan.

"Hurricane winds" in Iowa?

Wow! Have you ever heard of derecho storms? The Week informs us,
A powerful derecho storm that swept through the Midwest on Monday has left thousands of acres of crops completely devastated, and officials say more than half a million people could be without power for quite a while.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) said the storm, which had hurricane-force winds up to 112 mph, destroyed at least one-third of the entire state's crops. More than 10 million acres were completely flattened, leading Reynolds to say she thinks the storm should qualify for federal disaster declaration. The Washington Post reports between 180 and 270 million bushels of corn were likely damaged, shortly before harvesting usually begins in September.

What works? Hard work, family, mutual assistance, and a devotion to logic!

Joel Kotkin writes in the American Mind,
...The notion of America’s intrinsic evil may be popular on campuses, newsrooms and at CNN, but the ideology’s negative impact will be suffered by those left behind in these distressed communities. Diverting funds away from the police may have been seen as politically expedient, but it has not helped Baltimore, a city with a long history of police abuse, curb its astronomical murder rate. Similarly, “defunding” efforts are unlikely to bring down Chicago’s persistently high homicide rate, or in once-safe cities like New York, as it and other blue cities have emptied jails and reduced enforcement.

...In backing the Black Lives Matter movement, the corporate elite have decided to play the classic role that Lenin called “useful idiots”. Perhaps someone should let Jeff Bezos know BLM favors radical socialist economics to battle what its founders see as “racial capitalism ”. Liberals, particularly Jews, should recognize BLM condemns Israel as “genocidal”. Academic Melina Abdullah, a prominent BLM spokesperson in Los Angeles, is an open admirer of the racist, anti-Semitic Nation of Islam.

Adoption of the Black Lives Matter ideology threatens every institution it touches, imposing its will in Hollywood and the arts. Now as in the old Soviet Union or China today, culture is supposed to service the officially approved agenda. Race activists have been particularly successful in turning the education system, including primary schools, into instruments of indoctrination, through both social justice courses and activities increasingly required for both students and faculty.

Most amazing, given the enormous sacrifices for integration made by civil rights workers, some universities have embraced again segregation—what Western Washington University activists call “black student space” and even academic programs designed only for minority students. Worse yet, woke activists, white and black, denounce as “hopelessly white “behaviors that have worked for every ethnic group, including African Americans. The new notion, as the Smithsonian recently suggested, labels such things as intact family structures, frugality, and punctuality as “white” characteristics, opposed to universal keys to upward mobility.

...This is clearly destructive. Perhaps worst of all, Black Lives Matter is dismissive of the traditional family, but seeks to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure.” Given that much of the disparity between the races lies in the integrity of the family this approach seems patently self-destructive. The fact that seventy percent of Black children are born to single mothers should be seen as a critical problem, rather than celebrated as a departure from dreaded “whiteness.”

Rather than soulful sympathy and symbolic gestures aimed to redress past crimes, minorities need a program that addresses the real problems of unemployment, underemployment, rampant obesity, lack of affordable housing, and fractured families. To address these issues, minorities need to emulate the brave African-American business pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th Century, who formed a culture built around mutual assistance, family, and work.

...Whether in the Jim Crow South, the 1960s or today, what works for the aggrieved is not victimization and racial obsession, but adopting attitudes that have helped successful groups and people of all colors. Hard work, family, mutual assistance, and a devotion to logic are not constructs of Caucasian culture—many non-whites often exhibit these characteristics more than whites—but simply the surest pathways that have led even the most discriminated groups to a better future.

Which do we want?

Kamala Harris is openly anti-Catholic

In Fox News, Newt Gingrich writes,
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s choice as his vice presidential running mate — Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.— is the most openly anti-Catholic bigot to be on a national ticket in modern times.

Harris’ record is perfectly clear. She is openly anti-Catholic in confirming federal judges, wanting to prosecute the Little Sisters of the Poor, closing Catholic Hospitals that don’t join her union allies, and favoring taxpayer-paid abortions up until birth (in fact, she has twice voted against bills that would ensure that babies who lived through abortion procedures get medical care).

If Biden stumbles badly between now and October, how would the Democrats replace him?

Historian Victor Davis Hanson writes in part in American Greatness,
...Biden’s cognitive challenges are increasing geometrically, whether as a result of months of relative inactivity and lack of stimulation or just consistent with the medical trajectory of his affliction. His lot is increasingly similar to historical figures such as 67-year-old President William Henry Harrison, William Gladstone’s last tenure as prime minister, Chancellor Hindenburg, or Franklin Roosevelt in late 1944—age and physical infirmities signaling to the concerned that a subordinate might assume power sooner than later.

...When asked questions, Biden’s answers so often reveal racist subtexts. A few days ago, CBS reporter Errol Barnett, who is black, asked Biden whether he would take a cognitive assessment exam. Biden fired back to him that such an unfair question would be as if he had asked Barnett whether he was getting tested for cocaine before going live. “That’s like saying,” a perturbed Biden exclaimed to Barnett, “before you got on this program, you’re taking a test whether you’re taking cocaine or not . . . What do you think, huh? Are you a junkie?” Note the tell-tale Biden trademark of racist insinuation delivered with punk-like braggadocio.

...The problem is that in the past, a cognizant Biden was already racially edgy with his various earlier-career riffs about inner-city criminals, blue-collar chest-thumping about busing, and his more recent ideas about donut shops, accomplished black professionals on the verge of returning to slave status (“put y’all back in chains”), his racist descriptions of candidate Obama’s supposedly exceptional personal hygiene and ability to speak well, his corn-pop braggadocio, and on and on.

His mental lapses now serve as force multipliers and accelerants of the old Biden’s foot-in-mouth disease and render him often a caricature of a racist.

...If Biden late in the campaign stumbles in the debates, there is no post-convention remedy to reassure the public he is compos mentis or otherwise can be replaced by a majority consensus. Then the country would be entering something eerily similar to, but far graver than, the McGovern debacle of desperately looking for a new running mate after it was disclosed that an apparently perfectly cognizant Tom Eagleton—his running-mate for 18 days—had undergone two electric shock treatments in his past as well as undisclosed prior hospitalizations for bipolar disorder.

Kamala, Why did you block DNA evidence?

Laura Ingraham on Biden's pick of Harris

"Three months of chaos - and that's without China's bubonic bonus."

Mark Steyn writes,
October Surprise? Looks like we're gonna need a bigger face mask:

Panic has swept across China's Inner Mongolia province after a second bubonic plague lockdown was enforced, two days after the first, as whole villages are sealed off.

That's usually accompanied, as in Wuhan, with express check-in for flights to international destinations. If you're at Gate 23 at Bayannur International Airport, do let us know how the priority boarding for Milan and New York is going.

~A distinguished "bipartisan" group - ie, Democrats like John Podesta and Jennifer Granholm and anti-Trumpers like former RNC chair Michael Steele - has gamed out various scenarios for November 3rd and the weeks and months of chaos that will inevitably follow. Oddly, the scenario they don't game out is the one that's most likely: A narrow Trump victory (while losing the popular vote, as Republicans have for the last three decades with the exception of 2004).

As I said last Tuesday, the phony-baloney polls are tightening. They've since tightened further - to below six-and-a-half per cent. When they get to four, Trump wins: That's a cautious estimate of closeted Trump support based on last time round. Given four years of industrial-strength denigration of Trump's voters by media, academe, showbiz and all other cultural levers, it would not be un-cautious to estimate the undercount at five per cent - at least until the bubonic plague shows up.

Another two penn'orth from me: The GOP seems more likely to retain the White House and lose the Senate. If Trump goes down, Mitch goes with him and the Dems will have total control.

~But there is not going to be a Biden landslide. The media are doing their best to protect him, as they did with FDR by artfully avoiding showing his wheelchair. The problem is that Joe's wheelchair is his mouth, and that's a little harder to keep round the back of the podium for another three months. Democrats bet on #BLM to serve as the enervated Joe's livelier proxy, enthusing the base in a way that Corn Pop war stories and threats to beat up coeds do not. But CHOP is a flop. There are people who support Seattle/Portland-style anarchy because they like anarchy; there are others who support anarchy if it damages Trump. The latter are bailing. This New York Times story is a not so subtle attempt to turn the narrative:

SEATTLE — Faizel Khan was being told by the news media and his own mayor that the protests in his hometown were peaceful, with "a block party atmosphere."

But that was not what he saw through the windows of his Seattle coffee shop. He saw encampments overtaking the sidewalks. He saw roving bands of masked protesters smashing windows and looting.

Young white men wielding guns would harangue customers as well as Mr. Khan, a gay man of Middle Eastern descent who moved here from Texas so he could more comfortably be out.

You thought it was just geriatric country-club Republicans with white privilege who were hung up on outmoded concepts like private property? No, no, no: it's vibrant Middle Eastern gays, so you guilt-ridden white liberals no longer need feel queasy about not being entirely on board with total societal collapse. The Times wouldn't be rushing reporters out to unearth such typical examples of the put-upon Seattle business community as Mr Khan if it weren't necessary for a favorable November outcome. For upscale progressives, voting is virtue-signaling: Mayor DeBlasio says all the right things about Muslims and transgenders and none of it affects me in the least, so what's not to like? Unfortunately for New Yorkers, he's decided to take all the #BLM codswallop seriously and, just in case the economic, social and cultural wasteland made by the lockdown weren't enough, random Upper West Side ladies are now getting stabbed on the streets:

The broadcast networks were disinclined to show that rather vivid clip.

Steve Sailer says we're back to the Seventies - except we're not, because all the Death Wish vigilantes have moved to the red states: like most large western cities, New York has bifurcated into rich people and the poor immigrants who wait on them. So there's not a lot of Paul Kerseys-in-waiting between you and the stabber. Many urban sophisticates are going to have decide whether they wish to sacrifice themselves on the altar of their own moral preening. On the evidence to date, quite a few seem willing to. But enough to ensure a Biden presidency?

Hence that heartwarming story about gay immigrant Muslim coffee-shop proprietors struggling in the face of Class of Whenever trustiefundie psychotranny mobs: the Times has concluded that "mostly peaceful protests" have outlived their usefulness.

~There should be opportunities for Trump here - and at least a possibility of a clear runaway GOP victory "beyond the margin of lawyer", as I used to say back in the Bush days. In 1984 Reagan added just shy of ten points to his 1980 score because, having lived for four years with the guy the left damned as an extreme right-wing Bedtime for Bonzo nuclear madman, a significant chunk of the American people concluded that he was not his caricature. That's unlikely to happen this time - and not just because Trump seems to enjoy his particular caricature, but because Reagan's America no longer exists and is instead a demographically transformed ruin of mutually hostile tribalisms. At heart, even the hardest of hardcore MAGA optimists knows this will be a close race: As I put it a few weeks back, all we can say for certain about November 3rd is that on November 3rd we will be able to say nothing certain. Round about 8.47pm the networks will fill with a parade of bigshot Dems insisting that we need to "count every vote" and "if they're so convinced they've won, what are Republicans afraid of?"

It is entirely possible (and indeed rather likely) that Trump will win "election day" - that is to say, the in-person votes of those who wander along on a Tuesday to their town halls and school gyms - and that Biden will win the postal votes stretched out between mid-September and whenever the last envelope postmarked November 3rd finally shows up in the mail. Which is unknowable. Which is the point. Which is why the Democrat machine favors such a system.

So, a little after all those calls to "count every vote", the "mostly peaceful protests" will come roaring back, to be followed by court challenges to the same judges who've spent the last four years striking down "Muslim bans" and DACA stays. Three months of chaos - and that's without China's bubonic bonus.

Anti-Israel Obama is not happy

From the satirical Babylon Bee:
Obama Horrified As Trump Undoes His Years Of Hard Work Bombing The Middle East

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA—A teary-eyed Obama reported he was horrified that Trump has taken the first step toward peace in the Middle East with an agreement between Israel and the UAE.

Obama condemned Trump for doing the un-presidential work of actually trying to broker peace in foreign countries rather than just exploding them.

"My drone strikes -- all for nothing!" he cried as he read the news on his iPhone. "This is horrible!"

The former president addressed the nation in a video message recorded in his seaside mansion, slamming Trump for his willingness to suddenly overturn years of presidential precedent.

"Look, all those slaughtered civilians, bombed-out hospitals, ruined cities -- you didn't do that," he said, tears streaming from his face. "That was all me. It's really sad to see what America has become. We're not the warmongering nation we once were, and you've got Trump to thank for that."

He shook his head and wiped his eyes, glancing up at the Nobel Peace Prize on his shelf. "If you'd only listen to me and blow more people up, Drumpf -- you too would get one of those bad boys."

Kamala Harris Already Vetting VP Picks

From the satirical Babylon Bee:
Report: Kamala Harris Already Vetting VP Picks

U.S.—Supporters of Kamala Harris have been eagerly awaiting an announcement on who her VP pick will be when she takes over as president approximately 5 minutes after Joe Biden is inaugurated. According to sources close to the campaign, she is already vetting possible candidates for the job.

"I am proud to announce I will soon be announcing my pick for Vice President of the United States," said Harris. "We have searched all across this great land. While I cannot yet confirm who my pick will be, I can say this: my pick for VP will be even MORE of a woman and even MORE of color than I am. It will be the most colorful and womanly team ever!" She then threw her head back and cackled maniacally.

Joe Biden was also thrilled to hear the news that he would be getting not just one, but two female vice presidents.

The VP search has stalled since it has proven difficult to find a woman of color who survived both Kamala Harris' pro-abortion policies as well as her aggressive imprisonment of minorities. In a statement, the campaign also promised to announce a pick while all The Babylon Bee writers are sleeping so they won't have a chance to write a funny headline about it.

Blessed are the peacemakers!

Brooke Singman reports in Fox News,
The president, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed released a joint statement Thursday, after the three spoke “and agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.” The statement said that the “diplomatic breakthrough” was at “the request of President Trump,” and that Israel will “suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President’s Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.”

Of grievances and mobs

Angelo Codevilla has this to say at the end of this article.
Today, as in the Middle Ages, the mobs, the fires and desecrations, the ever-present focus on “the Jews!” have nothing to do with any truth or with the details of any particular event or accusation. What sense does it make for a mob in Brussels, Belgium, to tear down a statue of Julius Caesar in protest against four U.S. policemen’s killing of a black man whom they were arresting? Or for that matter, for a mob in Philadelphia to deface a monument to an unknown soldier of the Revolutionary War of 1776, or for Bostonians to organize the removal of a statue of Abraham Lincoln? Alas, the millennialists and their mob do not need specific grievances against specific targets. The civilization itself is the only real target; its existence and the mob’s lack of complete mastery over it are the only grievances that really matter. They need know only that the civilization they are attacking has become vulnerable, undefended, and may be safely treated with contempt. If we do not share that contempt, history shows we have no choice but to treat the millennialist mob as the enemies they are.

"The rising crime rate in this country demands a leader who prioritizes enforcing the law and protecting citizens first, not scoring points with radical constituencies."

In the New York Post, Matt Whitaker writes,
The most serious issue in policing today is a skyrocketing homicide rate — not “systemic racism,” the issue that animates those “mostly peaceful protestors” who are looting businesses and destroying public property across the land.

Joe Biden should show leadership on the slay spree. Instead, he panders to the anti-police left.

...It’s a pattern extending nationwide — 36 of the country’s 50 largest cities have experienced double-digit homicide increases in 2020, and the trend is getting worse, not better.

Biden’s hard-left policy platform is utterly divorced from this reality. The Democratic presidential nominee has failed to address the crime wave and to formulate a serious plan for restoring order. Instead, he has chosen to treat the broader law-enforcement issue merely as a platform for touting his anti-police and anti-Trump bona fides.

...It should be obvious that it is Biden, not Trump, who is putting politics ahead of public safety and the rule of law. The rising crime rate in this country demands a leader who prioritizes enforcing the law and protecting citizens first, not scoring points with radical constituencies.

Enfeebled by and beholden to the hard left, Joe Biden is proving utterly incapable of providing the sort of leadership our country needs in this moment of peril.

Will ethanol find new markets?

In the American Spectator, Eric Peters writes an interesting article about ethanol. There are some new uses for it other than adding it to gasoline here.

"The irony is that mindless conformity creates even more isolation and even more vulnerability, even as we believe we’re escaping it through compliance."

In the Federalist, Stella Morabito writes in part,
...And what of today’s backdrop of the Wuhan virus? We seem to be living ever more in a masked dystopia, even after the proverbial curve was flattened.

How much of the hype about this flu is really about public safety? How much is it about cultivating the social isolation that breeds distrust, division, and malaise, all to be exploited for political purposes? Should we really believe that blue city mayors and blue state governors, the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, et al., are pushing the cataclysmic view of this flu only for our own safety?

Blatant double standards clarify that their hype is meant to continue our isolation, and is not for our own good. As far-left mayors and governors enforce social distancing for law-abiding citizens, they have pretty much smiled upon Antifa rioters as “peaceful protesters,” especially those who gather en masse for more than 60 nights in a row to provoke and attack federal officials protecting a federal court house in Portland.

Such officials are also content with forcing us apart from loved ones dying in the hospital, with prohibiting proper funerals for them while bigwigs get big funerals with no social distancing. At the recent funeral of Rep. John Lewis, former president Barack Obama even used angry rhetoric that isolates Americans further from one another.

Most underhanded is the apparent intent to make social isolation a “new normal” with no end in sight. Did certain officials string us along from the very beginning to believe the shutdowns were temporary? Or did they realize along the way that this was just another crisis too good “to go to waste”? To be used to consolidate their power and rid themselves of political opponents, like, say, President Trump and his supporters?

What better way to do that than through a bait-and-switch approach that keeps us locked down indefinitely, economically strapped, and demoralized with closings and continued isolation? We were told that the initial 45 days of shutdowns in March and April were to prevent overwhelming hospitals with Wuhan virus patients. Most of us sucked it up and complied with good faith and good will and at massive social and economic cost.

...Unprecedented censorship of medical information. Tech oligarchs seem committed to keeping us ignorant—and thus isolated—from medical information they deem inexpedient. Google, Twitter, and Facebook have all censored reports from numerous board-certified physicians on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine as a safe and effective treatment for the Wuhan virus in certain circumstances.

Why block Americans’ access to a second medical opinion? Well, it seems any good news on the virus front goes against the preferred narrative of certain power grabbers. Their stringent censorship will likely mean more deaths from the virus, with more loneliness, more deaths of despair.

The Mask Wars. Masks became a big thing after expert-in-chief Anthony Fauci did a 180 on his initial pronouncement that masks aren’t effective. Now he says you should wear goggles too. The media has scared and nudged busybodies to publicly accuse anyone who prefers to go maskless—even outdoors—of endangering the lives of others.

Masks also serve as an allegory for our times. Even if they are effective, mandatory face coverings put us all into a state of anonymity and isolation. They make real face-to-face conversations impossible.

...In this light, here’s a fascinating question to ponder: What exactly do they hate most about President Trump? Doubtless they hate him mostly because he seems immune to their social pressures.

That’s the bottom line. They can’t control him the way they do other Republican leaders who are so fearful of being called mean names. Worse for these power elites is that they can’t seem to isolate Trump’s supporters from him.

No matter what you think of Trump or his tweets, we should all meditate on the power of that sort of immunity from social pressures. We should find ways to develop it in ourselves. Because if tyrants had less ability to instill social isolation, they’d be less able to induce the fears that allow them to control people’s lives.

An idea

"But if good people don’t speak up, it can happen here just as easily as any other country which succumbed to tyranny and went hurtling down the road to genocide."

In FrontPage Magazine, Phil Orenstein and Jerry Matacotta write in part,
All of these Marxist revolutionary movements have as their basic foundation the denial of democracy and individual rights. They believe democracy is wrong, capitalism is wrong, freedom is wrong, religious liberty is wrong, and most important they believe the Enlightenment based on individual rights, reason and logic is fundamentally flawed.

They believe in an authoritarian society based on censorship and the destruction of history, where alternate views are forbidden. They silence any opinions that are not in accordance with their rigid narrative from the pages of their “Little Red Book.” Under Mao’s Cultural Revolution, this narrative was the only thought allowed. They silence and crush anyone with a different view. High on the thrill of revolution, they systematically destroy every remnant of the wicked past before they can usher in their life-destroying revolutionary state.

...Logic, reason, and critical thinking have always been our building blocks. One of the most basic principles that was built into the moral fabric of our country, was the maxim that although we disagreed, we protected and defended each other’s right to express differences of opinion. However, if you say anything about BLM, that is contrary to the woke doctrine, all logic and reason is thrown out the window. If you say “All Lives Matter” or any opinion at odds with their Little Red Book, you could be vilified, shamed, and cancelled, lose your job, lose you circle of friends, and your personal safety and security could be at stake.

After our statues and monuments are torn down, next they will come after our books. The final step of the Russian Revolution, Nazi takeover, the Cultural Revolution, and all the others, after the book burning, confiscation of firearms, purges from jobs and social circles, was the people losing their lives.

...But if good people don’t speak up, it can happen here just as easily as any other country which succumbed to tyranny and went hurtling down the road to genocide. The worse crime that Americans can commit is to be silent, because if you’re silent, evil will take over and you’ll lose your freedom and even your life. The oft-quoted Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Black Lives Matter is a Marxist movement intent on creating chaos and upheaval to overthrow our government and destroy America. If you don’t agree with them, you are sub-human. But the vast majority of Americans don’t believe in their agenda. Are we that afraid as a nation to stand up to them?

Follow the money!

In FrontPage Magazine, Daniel Greenfield writes,
It’s about the money. It was always about the money.

Did anyone seriously think that Biden would pick Stacey Abrams, Rep. Karen Bass, or Susan Rice, when he can marry Mrs. Moneybags for her money and the donors that come with it?

Once Team Biden decided that they had to have a black woman in the second spot, there was only one that came with sacks of money. And there was only one who could tap into the massive reserves of California cash that has been used to transform elections nationwide.

Biden vowed to pick a black woman to represent the black community, but he cynically ended up picking a politician with few ties to the black community, but lots of ties to big white money.

Wall Street executives are already cheering the pick. So is Hollywood.

And the black community got played.

But what else is new?

...And if this is how Biden is treating the black community before the election when he actually needs their votes, imagine how he’ll treat them afterward when he doesn’t need them anymore.

Coherent!

From the satirical Babylon Bee:
Shocking Video Emerges Of Biden Saying Something Completely Coherent

U.S.—In a revelation that could upend the 2020 presidential campaign, a shocking new video has emerged of Joe Biden saying a full, coherent sentence. To the relief of many dozens of supporters, Biden has proved to the world that he can string at least 8 words together in the proper order according to guidelines set forth by the English language.

According to sources who have obtained a copy of the leaked video, there is a moment where Biden looks directly at the camera and says, "I'm Joe Biden, and I'm running for president."

Many are applauding this colossal achievement by the presidential candidate. However, for those who enjoy Biden's folksy way of jumbling his words, this is being seen as a major gaffe. The campaign immediately started doing damage control, releasing ads reminding voters that Joe Biden is still the bumbling old goof they know and love.

Biden's team of 13 sound engineers tasked with piecing together random words uttered by Biden and forming real sentences with them for campaign ads is reportedly concerned for their jobs after hearing the possibility they may not be needed anymore.

Update: the video has been exposed as a doctored deep fake.

George Parry writes,
Recently, America’s Frontline Doctors (AFD), a group of practicing physicians from across the nation, held a highly informative press conference on Capitol Hill. In contrast to the researchers and government medical experts who have dominated the media’s pandemic coverage, the AFD members actually see and treat real, live patients. Their 43-minute press conference was filled with valuable information, including, but not limited to, the need to reopen schools, physicians’ use of hydroxychloroquine plus zinc and azithromycin to successfully treat and prevent COVID-19, and the harm being caused by the ongoing and unwarranted societal and economic lockdowns.

Biden Campaign Warns That For Debate Biden Will Need A Mask That Completely Conceals His Face And He Might Sound Different

U.S.—The Trump campaign has been making claims that rival candidate Joe Biden isn’t fit to debate, has been “hiding in his basement,” and may try to skip the debates so as not to embarrass himself. The Biden campaign has denied these charges and said that Biden is looking forward to the debates and a chance to confront Trump. They had some caveats, though.

“Because of the coronavirus concern, we will need to take extra precautions,” said Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon. “Biden will need to wear an extra safe face mask that will cover his entire face. And while wearing it, his voice might sound different -- even have a different accent -- but that’s just because of... the mask.”

Dillon said that Biden should easily trounce Trump in the debate. “I think you’ll be surprised at how well he does,” she added. “It will be a totally different Biden than you’ve come to expect. But that will be Joe Biden up on that stage -- just unidentifiable behind a mask and sounding different and much more coherent.”

Dillon also warned that it is possible that during the debate someone looking just like Joe Biden may stumble out onto the stage looking confused and wondering what’s going on. She told the press that would be Moe Biden, Joe Biden’s twin brother whom no one had mentioned until now, and he likes to play jokes like that. Silly old Moe.

Priorities

The satirical Babylon Bee reports,
CHICAGO, IL—Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot protected the citizens of Chicago yesterday by arresting a 7-year-old having a birthday party.

The mayor reportedly jumped in her car and drove over toward the boy's house, waving at looters, rioters, and murderers as she passed. Bricks, Molotov cocktails, and hand grenades flew over her car as she hurtled down the streets of Chicago, careening down alleyways and ripping through parking lots to get to the illegal party.

"Drop the cake and put your hands behind your head," Lightfoot said. "Nice and easy -- you're coming with me."

"The streets are now safe," Lightfoot said as she led the boy to a Chicago PD squad car. "The citizens of Chicago can rest easy knowing that unlawful gatherings like this party are being broken up."

"We feel much safer now that this maniac is behind bars," said one Chicagoan as he hid in his house from looters. "I was really worried when I heard that a few people were gathering for a party. Now I know we're safe."

"We were concerned she was coming to take us down," said one looter as he threw a brick into the window of a Target. "But she just passed us right on by. She definitely has her priorities in the right place."

On her way back from arresting the youngster, Lightfoot pulled over to lecture a rioter who wasn't wearing a mask. Once he had put his mask back on, she told him to go about his business.

"can any of us imagine some way forward in which Right and Left just “bury the hatchet” and “hug it out”? "

In American Greatness, Malcolm Pollack writes in part,
...Looking at the yawning rift in American politics—the fundamentally incompatible visions of society and government that the two factions hold, the dehumanizing mutual antipathy that finds freer expression every day, the unforgettable damage already done, and the implacable fury with which they grapple for every atom of power—can any of us imagine some way forward in which Right and Left just “bury the hatchet” and “hug it out”?

...These are dangerous times. Civil war is nothing to wish for. But under the name of “revolution,” it can be a powerful attractor, especially in an era of pathological presentism. Have we already crossed the event horizon? Can we, for the sake of our children’s children, find at the last moment a way to reverse course, to step back from the brink, to find a future timeline that avoids the dreadful singularity of civil war? Only future historians can answer that question. But one thing is certain: things that are falling tend to accelerate. Time is short.

"In our arrogance, we imagine that it is we who are disdainfully rejecting America’s Founders. They would want nothing to do with us."

Matthew Boose writes in part in American Greatness,
...No sane, healthy society would elevate a person like George Floyd, and yet it would be difficult to name a person more revered in the country today.

...While it’s bad form to speak ill of the dead, we may make exceptions when the departed are wrongly beatified. This perverse exaltation reflects a timidity and self-loathing that increasingly defines the American soul, qualities revealed by months of acquiescence before unprecedented attacks on the freedom and dignity of the American people.

These attacks are part and parcel of a radical effort to transform the country politically, historically, psychologically, and culturally. No less than Barack Obama expressed the necessity of starting over again, calling John Lewis a “founding father” of “that fuller, fairer, better America” that could very well take “centuries” to build.

...Floyd, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, is an omnipresent figure who has played a corresponding role in ushering our creepy, despotic “new normal.” Arguably the most powerful doctor in human history, it is heresy to question Fauci’s mere utterances. Despite obvious evidence of his political motivations, he receives the unyielding adulation of millions of Americans. He is benevolent, unfireable. Even his mistakes are somehow proof of his perfection.

These new founders aren’t necessarily good founders, but they are the founders we deserve. An America with more confidence, self-respect, and jealousy of its liberty would not have lifted them to such prominence.

Over the last few months, Americans have faced an unrelenting barrage of commands and insults. We have been ordered to give up work, business, and religion—to suspend human relationships under penalty of law. We have been ordered to hate ourselves, to celebrate the erasure of our heritage, and welcome whatever price America’s “guilt” requires. We have seen Americans denied the basic protections of law.

To be sure, many protest these things, although many are too afraid to do so publicly. Others may be just credulous. But countless others have been active, willing participants in their own disenfranchisement. For many Americans, it seems, the highest virtue is to be perceived as obedient to unelected bureaucrats and their elected intermediaries, or else appropriately sensitive to the call of “social justice” and its advocates. No matter how arbitrary, absurd, or humiliating, the orders of these two classes of rulers must be followed, and with zeal.

Perhaps you have seen people walking around in face shields lately. Eager to obey, they are just as eager to inflict punishment—gratuitous punishment—on those who contradict the superstitious authority of “science.” A deep distrust in the ability of ordinary people to use common sense, to think for themselves and direct their own lives, has led to a large part of the public identifying with an aristocracy of scientists, embodied in the august figure of Anthony Fauci. At bottom is a terror at the thought of risk and of the responsibilities of citizenship, which are readily abdicated to bureaucrats.

The whole spectacle is obscene and un-American, but it does not begin to capture the full extent of America’s abasement. Enjoined to honor as some kind of martyr a career criminal who pointed a pistol at a pregnant woman’s abdomen, many Americans have obliged that command as well.

...In our arrogance, we imagine that it is we who are disdainfully rejecting America’s Founders. They would want nothing to do with us.

"Somebody call the police!" You know, the ones we want to defund!

In his Morning Rant in the Ace of Spades blog, Oregon Muse writes,
"SOMEBODY CALL THE POLICE!" shrieked the Antifa thug with a 'DEFUND THE POLICE' sign and an ACAB T-shirt just before he was slammed to the pavement by the driver of the car whose progress he thought he could obstruct.
I've seen a number of videos where there's pushback on Antifa/BLM from normal Americans, either by simply not stopping their vehicles or actually getting out and decking one of the loudmouth protestors.

And I'm surprised (maybe I shouldn't be) how they react most of the time when this happens:

They start screaming "Somebody call the police!"

Isn't that kind of weird?

This is a group that wants to *defund* the police. And now they want *help* from the police who wouldn't be there if they had they way. They want help from from those whom they have previously declared to be bastards, all of them. That's what ACAB means, right?

It looks like the Antifa losers haven't thought through what it means to reject law and order. Because the laws and morality that they despise actually protect them. What if normal Americans did not feel restrained from going out and busting heads? What if the citizens of Portland decided that if the Portland police weren't going to do their jobs, they would do it for them?

If that day ever came, it would go very badly for Antifa/BLM.

In the video below, a scuffle breaks out and it looks like the Antifa losers are getting whupped on pretty good. This is called making them play by their own rules. They claim to have rejected all of the norms and values of Western Civilization. OK then, this is what life is going to be like when you do that. The violence and chaos they bring to others is now being visited on them. It's going to be all against all and only the strong will win. Soy boys with mental health and social adjustment issues will not stand a chance in such an environment. Do they actually think the world of 'Mad Max' is going to be fun?

He closes by playing the video from Fort Collins that I played for you yesterday. An Antifa thug attacked a man in a wheelchair and then he was attacked by people who were attending a pro-police rally.

"You guys came to the wrong city, boys and girls."

Antifa tried to interrupt a rally in support of cops in Fort Collins, Colorado. Antifa thugs made the mistake of attacking someone in a wheelchair. Vivek Saxena has the report here.

"The American people are being told a lie by the media!

Thanks for the clarification, Joe!
