Should writers of "independent commentary" be required to disclose who is paying them?

What do you think of this idea? Ace of Spades writes,

there ought to be a law -- if you're holding yourself out as an independent commentator, you should be required to disclose who's paying you for this "independent commentary."
It would be amusing watching the Washington Examiner and National Review react to such a law.
