Freedom of speech? You're joking!

One of our sons is in a high school in Santa Fe. He has an unstoppable sense of humor, and cracks me up several times each night. He has amazing talent at the piano, football, and basketball.

This morning his mother met with his principal, who warned her that the school district has promulgated new rules that he will be required to enforce. They pertain to speech. For example, no joking about building a wall. He has heard our son making such jokes, and warns us that if any student makes such jokes they will be subject to suspension or actually being expelled.

This from a school in which drug use by students, mostly marijuana, but also cocaine, is tolerated every day. My son's mother brought up that issue, and suggested the use of drug-sniffing dogs. If you are going to get serious about students' speech, maybe it is also time to get serious about open, flagrant drug abuse on campus, she told him.
