Since reports surfaced that Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) told her Democratic colleagues that she’s looking past impeaching President Trump in favor of putting him behind bars, the media has become addled on asking her fellow lawmakers if they’ll help make Trump in prison a reality.
No interview with a Democratic congressman concludes these days without the requisite question about if they, too, support putting Trump in jail. And if the lawmaker expresses any kind of hesitation, these reporters almost always follow up with the same consolation question: Well, what about impeachment?
Between CNN and MSNBC, “Trump” and “jail” and/or “prison” has been mentioned 604 times since last Thursday, a mere four days. MSNBC’s led the way with 310 mentions of “Trump” and “prison” and/or “jail,” with CNN a close behind at 294 mentions.
And no news anchor is more addled on this habit than CNN’s Blitzer. In an interview with Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), Blitzer asked three times in a row if Himes will seek to imprison the president. After failing to secure a hard commitment, Blitzer asked if the Connecticut congressman if he’d at least pursue impeachment charges.
Blitzer at one point asked with detectable optimism: “When Nancy Pelosi says she wants to see the president United States in prison, is that at all realistic?”
Blitzer’s CNN colleague, Brianna Keilar, likewise appears to try getting the ball moving on a prison sentence for the president, asking Sen. Bob Menéndez (D-N.J.): “Do you want to see the president in prison instead of impeaching him?”
Various media personalities across ABC, MSNBC, and elsewhere have likewise suggested Trump being imprisoned isn’t out of the realm of possibility
