Treating the mentally ill

When I worked as a child protection social worker, I sometimes went to court to ask a judge to put a 72 hour hold a a person exhibiting symptoms of mental illness. Invariably, they would be right back in the community immediately after the 72 hour hold. Today's Denver Post says that only 300 to 500 of the 2800 involuntary holds are sent to longer term care. What kind of care do they get in the longer term care? Just as importantly, what kind of care do those who are returned to their communities get?
