Overcoming the negativity bias

Going through life in a happy stupor wouldn’t be a great evolutionary strategy — you wouldn’t see the lion coming — but there’s no danger of succumbing to bliss, because the impact of good events is relatively small and wears off quickly. It’s the bad event that must be minimized, so that its power doesn’t debilitate you.

Felix was understandably skeptical at the pep talk, but this was a well-established technique from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which has emerged as the gold standard for psychological treatment. CBT is essentially a set of strategies for overcoming the negativity bias. No other treatment has been studied so thoroughly and found to be as safe and effective for such a wide range of problems, including depression, anxiety, and other disorders.
